ABSTRACT

A two to three period analytical chemistry experiment has been developed which allows second year students to explore chemical color tests used to detect adulterated pharmaceuticals. Students prepare several paper analytical devices (PADs) to generate positive and negative controls antibiotics, along with cutting agents such as starch and chalk. These PADs are used to identify the active ingredients and excipients in mystery tablets prepared by their classmates. In the second part of the lab, the students select an individual color test and design an experiment to quantify their mystery pill's active pharmaceutical ingredient (API). Nearly all of the student groups were able to successfully identify adulterants present in their mystery tablets. The quantification of the mystery tablets was also successful with all but one group calculating the correct concentration within 6%. In a postlab assessment, the students identified their largest gains in their ability to analyze data and other information, skill in science writing, and learning of laboratory techniques.

ABSTRACT

We evaluated the normal Raman (NR) and the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) of three sympathomimetic amines: phenethylamine, ephedrine, and 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA). In addition, quantum mechanical calculations-geometry optimization and calculations of the harmonic vibrational frequencies-were performed using the density functional theory (DFT) approach. Vibrational assignments were made by comparing the experimental and calculated spectra. The study found that both NR and SERS provided excellent spectra for the drugs tested. Certain conditions, such as response to various laser wavelengths and background fluorescence of the analyte, could be easily managed using SERS techniques. The DFT-calculated spectra could be correlated with the experimental spectra without the aid of a scaling factor. We also present a set of discriminant bands, useful for distinguishing the three compounds, despite their structural similarities.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To identify the practical human resource management (HRM) issues that may impact on job satisfaction, nurse retention and ultimately quality of patient care of the nurse unit manager's (NUM) role. BACKGROUND: NUMs are in the unique position within the healthcare industry to impact upon and effect large numbers of people, including nurses, doctors, patients and their families, and processes on a daily basis. More effective HRM practices could improve performance in terms of staff satisfaction, positive patient outcomes and the cost effectiveness of staff retention. METHOD: Two focus groups, one group of nine NUMs and one group of five staff nurses, were conducted at an Australia public hospital. A descriptive phenomenological approach informed data generation and data analysis. RESULTS: The NUMs reported that they were not adequately trained in the skills required to effectively manage staff conflict such as manipulation and bitterness, requiring disciplinary intervention on an ongoing basis. The consequences included reduced staff morale, decreased staff satisfaction, increased stress to the NUM and ultimately retention issues for both the NUM and Unit staff. CONCLUSION: This study highlights the potential impact of inadequate implementation and understanding of HRM policy and practice by NUMS on the front line. Further research is required to understand why this phenomenon exists and how it can be remedied.

ABSTRACT

Metal-organic framework (MOF)/graphite hybrid materials were prepared using an in situ process. Graphites with various chemical and physical features were used, and HKUST-1 was selected as the MOF component. The samples (parent materials and hybrid materials) were characterized by X-ray diffraction, nitrogen sorption, scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. Then they were tested as ammonia adsorbents in dynamic conditions. The results indicate that the functionalization of graphite is important to build the hybrid materials with synergistic properties. The lack of functional groups on graphite results in the formation of a simple physical mixture. Besides the surface chemistry of the graphitic component, the physical parameters (porosity and size of flakes) also seem to influence the formation of the hybrid materials. It is observed that the graphite particles disturb the formation of HKUST-1 and induce a different crystal morphology (more defects and increased surface roughness) than the one observed when MOF is formed in the absence of a substrate. The latter behavior causes less ammonia to be adsorbed on the hybrid materials than is expected for the simple physical mixture of HKUST-1 and graphite. The MOF structure collapses (in HKUST-1 and the hybrid materials) upon ammonia adsorption and leads to the formation of new species.
