ABSTRACT

A case is reported of the simultaneous occurrence of renal carcinoma with staghorn calculus, perinephric abscess, and xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis in the same kidney, with subcutaneous abscess of the thigh as the initial presentation. The coexistence of these diseases in the same kidney would seem to be important since they are frequently confused with each other.

ABSTRACT

Two patients who presented with acute pancreatitis and developed pseudocyst erosion of a major vessel are reported. Both cases had associated biliary tract disease. A fatal outcome in both cases demonstrates the seriousness of pseudocyst of the pancreas following acute pancreatitis when the patient's general health is already compromised.

ABSTRACT

The results of endoscopic examination, biopsy taken at endoscopy and cytology of brush smears and/or gastric lavage specimens in 100 patients with proven malignant gastric lesions are described. Overall, a correct pre-operative diagnosis was achieved in 98 cases. Endoscopic appearance was a more accurate criterion in cases of exophytic advanced carcinoma, malignant ulcer and lymphoma than in diffuse infiltrative carcinoma or in early carcinoma, where biopsy and cytology were more accurate. Nine per cent of neoplasms were malignant lymphomas, which is much higher than the usual reported incidence. Early carcinoma was found in 5% of cases. In spite of readily available facilities for endoscopic diagnosis, most cases of gastric neoplasm were already advanced at the time of examination.

ABSTRACT

PIP: A leading article (January 27, p. 191) and your medicolegal expert (p. 244) both record that the Law Commission has expressed its provisional view that a child with injury or deformity caused by somebody's neglience before birth could sue that person for damages. The same principle is being supported in the course of the thalidomide case and it is a principle with which nobody can seriously disagree. When one looks at it, however, in the context of the present abortion laws, it is clear that either this principle or the abortion laws must be wrong. According to the abortion laws a fetus has no separate existence apart from its mother and in certain circumstances can be killed. If this "thing" which has not and never had an existence of its own also has no legal right to live, how can it have legal rights of any kind?^ieng
