ABSTRACT
Cytomegalovirus infection (CMV) complicated the posttransplant course in 9 of 24 children after liver transplantation. We found specific antibodies (IgG and IgM) to be of very low value in diagnosis and monitoring of CMV infection after liver transplantation. Detection of CMV-DNA by PCR method in the blood or urine was very useful for diagnosis, but less for monitoring of the course of disease and its treatment. Measurements of early immediate CMV antigen (IEA), in peripheral blood leucocytes allowed for very early diagnosis of CMV infection and correlated well with the course of disease and response to treatment of the patient.

The authors demonstrate the dependence of development of a uniform layer of syncytiotrophoblast with good cytochrome oxidase activity in placental villi on the absence of noxious industrial by-products in the environment of the pregnant woman. The degree of deviation from the developmental norm observed in regions free from industrial pollution can serve as measure of the degree of that pollution in urban-industrial regions.

The arrangement of peptides which form the hinge region in Fab-Fc recombinant immunoglobulins, restored artificially from Fab and Fc fragments was approached by computation. The architecture of this region in the symmetric (Fab')2-Fc derivatives and in the asymmetric (Fab')1-Fc differs to a considerable extent. In (Fab')2-Fc species but not in (Fab')1-Fc the preferable arrangement appeared to be stabilized predominantly by the mutual interaction of symmetric hinge peptides. It was concluded that the resulted by this interaction rotational restrictions may eventually induce the structural transformations in the molecule, influencing the effector activity of Fc.

A morphological analysis of the effect of vincristine (VCR) on the cardiac muscle and smooth muscles of blood-vessels and alimentary canal of mice has been carried out. These animals show a high resistance to sublethal doses of VCR. The changes in the cardiac muscle involve mitochondria. The widening of the space between the intercalated discs is seen and accompanied by the occurrence of spheromembranous bodies (SMB) in it. The only alteration typical of the effect of VCR in the smooth muscles is the presence of SMB inside the mitochondria. The number and extent of changes observed increased in course of experiment.
