ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: To assess the participation rate and results of cytological assessment in the context of cervical cancer screening activities in an area of Barcelona (Spain) with a large immigrant population. METHODS: Descriptive retrospective study of cytologies performed between 2001 and 2006 in women > or =14 years of age living in 2 out of 10 districts of Barcelona (n = 129 327) and participating in cervical cancer screening activities within a sexual and reproductive health care programme. RESULTS: Between 2001 and 2006, overall participation among women aged 20- to 64-years old was 50.7%, with higher participation among women aged 20-34 years than among those aged 50-64 years (63.8 and 36.0%, respectively; P < 0.01). The median frequency was 0.5 cytologies/year. The rate of pathological results increased from 11.4 per thousand in 2001 to 29.0 per thousand in 2006 (P < 0.001). This increase was higher among younger women and was mainly due to an increase in the rate of atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASCUS) and low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (L-SIL). CONCLUSIONS: These results show a low rate of participation in the public cervical cancer screening programme and an increase in the number of pathological results during the study period. These results provide useful information at a time when significant changes in the prevention of cervical cancer are being planned.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To determine the factors associated with the onset of cannabis use through a systematic review of cohort studies. METHODS: An internet-based search was performed using several keywords and their combinations. Original studies with longitudinal design and the onset of cannabis use as dependent variable, as well as review studies were included, published between January 1980 and May 2004. Methodology quality of the studies was assessed independently by two reviewers, according to pre-established criteria, in order to classify studies in high, mid or low quality. Agreement between reviewers was assessed through kappa coefficient. RESULTS: A total of 32 relevant studies were identified, of which 13 were of higher quality. Selection bias for the inclusion of consumers at the baseline measurement and lack or insufficient adjustment for confounders were the causes of exclusion. The factors of great evidence related to the onset of cannabis use were masculine sex, consumption of tobacco or alcohol, having a problematic relationship with parents, and cannabis consumption by friends. CONCLUSION: Results highlight the importance of different individual, family and environmental factors on the onset of cannabis use. These must be considered to properly arrange intervention programs focusing on primary prevention among teenagers.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

We describes a surgical procedure for the replacement of the ANTERIOR CRUCIATE LIGAMENT of the canine knee from allografts ligaments that is being applied to a population of 12 dogs that incluyed two groups. The I Group is made up of 6 dogs that had a recent implant and the II Group of 6 dogs that had a replaced of the Anterior Cruciate Ligament of a tissues banking. Therefore, we decribes a technique for the storage and preservation of the tissue bank of Anterior Cruciate Ligaments allografts. This work was studied and followed during a period of one year and in the individual follow up of the dogs the oldest one had six months. The excellence of the resultas show the goodness of this surgical procedure to establish the good results do to the viability of the replacement for the I group in 84 por cent of the cases and for the II group in the 100 por cent of them
