ABSTRACT

We report on a disseminated variant of Kaposi's sarcoma (M.K.) with a moderate course in a homosexual patient negative for LAV/HTLV-III antibodies. The disease had started at the age of 44 years. Clinical examination proved the patient's good condition. Serological findings revealed numerous former infections. Control investigations for 5 years have not shown any signs of immune deficiency, so far. Morphological investigation (applicable to all forms of M.K.) indicated a reversed differentiation of the vascular connective tissue with ensuing misdifferentiation. Thus, the tumor should be interpreted as an abnormal product of the primary vascular mesenchyme. It is characterized by a synchymal/spongiochymal structure. This view corresponds with older ideas. Recent histochemical and electron microscopical findings do not contradict this conception in any way, but do rather confirm it.

ABSTRACT

We report a case of a moderately disseminated, slowly progressing Kaposi's sarcoma, with a primary cutaneous nodule on the glans penis. The multifocal skin tumor appeared in a 44-year-old bisexual man and was not associated with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

ABSTRACT

Histological examination of a skin biopsy from a 30-year-old male patient which had been performed because of a naevus-like lentigo revealed the presence of a mite within the upper part of the corium. To our knowledge, this may be the first description of such a finding. This mite was identified as a subspecies of Tarsonemus hominis Dahl. Basically, the possibility of a transport of viral material in this way cannot be excluded.

ABSTRACT

A 65-year-old woman developed a prominent tumor-like swelling of the skin in the face and shoulder area after having received parenteral applications of a drug containing polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) (Depot-Impletol) for many years. Upon first examination the alterations appeared to represent a tumor of the adipose tissue. Subsequently, however, they were shown to result from excessive storage of high-molecular fractions of PVP in the reticulohistiocytic system. Storage of these fractions of PVP, which cannot be eliminated with urine, was also found in the interstitial tissue of adjacent muscles and in local lymph nodes. The histological picture resembles a thesaurismosis. The present report also describes enzyme histochemical and electron-microscopic findings. The electron-microscopic results are similar to those described by other authors in the few ultrastructural reports of PVP storage. The ultrastructural alterations in the capillary endothelium suggest a transendothelial transport mechanism for the incorporated substance.

ABSTRACT

A keratoacanthoma developed on a nevus sebaceus on the cheek of a 7 years old girl within three weeks. The nevus revealed additional organoid and suborganoid hamartomas. The occurrence of keroacanthoma or even squamous cell epithelioma is a very rare event in nevus sebaceus.

ABSTRACT

Detailed allergologic investigations, allergy histories and skin tests in 80 patients with perioral dermatitis led to the conclusion that the disease has to be considered a manifestation of atopy. Thus another clinical entity would have to be added to the hitherto known manifestations of the atopic constitution. The findings reported by other investigators may thus be interpreted as conditional or aggravating pathogenetic factors.
