ABSTRACT

Significance Statement Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) is characterized by variable neurological findings such as headache, deterioration in mental condition, loss of consciousness and visual loss. The disease results with impairment of the cerebral blood flow autoregulation. Ondansetron, serotonin (5HT-3) receptor antagonist, may cause the haemorrhagic PRES.

ABSTRACT

Apart from demonstrating the interaction behavior of malondialdehyde (MDA) with Na+/K+-ATPase using in silico, the current study aims to investigate the effect of rheumatoid arthritis-related oxidative stress on Na+/K+-ATPase activity that is present in the erythrocyte cell membrane, which is rich in proteins vulnerable to damage from MDA and other free radicals. The target population of this study consists of 28 rheumatoid arthritis patients and 20 healthy volunteers whose MDA levels and Na+/K+-ATPase activity were determined. It was shown that MDA levels of rheumatoid arthritis patients increased (p < 0.001) and their Na+/K+-ATPase activity noticeably decreased when compared to those of healthy individuals. Also, according to this in silico modeling, MDA decreased Na+/K+-ATPase activity in line with the correlation analyses. Consequently, while elevated levels of MDA in the rheumatoid arthritis group were suggestive of oxidative stress, a decreased Na+/K+-ATPase-activity led us to speculate that the cellular membrane had sustained injury. Therefore, our results could be useful in explaining how MDA affects Na+/K+-ATPase activity in the interior of a specific molecular pathway.

ABSTRACT

Radiological imaging is important in the diagnosis of the artery of Percheron (AOP) infarction. This study aimed to discuss the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of this abnormal variant of arterial supply. Patients who presented to our hospital with stroke symptoms between 2010 and 2019 and underwent brain MRI were evaluated retrospectively. Eleven patients with AOP infarction were included in the study. The mean age of the patients was 67.4 ± 9.6 years. Seven (63.6%) of the patients were male and four (36.4%) were female. Accompanying diseases were hypertension in eight patients (72.7%) and coronary artery disease in five (45.4%). In eight patients (72.3%), the infarction of AOP extended under the third ventricle wall, and 90.9% of the patients had an asymmetrical radiographic pattern of ischemic damage. With the widespread use of endovascular stroke treatment, it has become critical to establish a rapid and accurate diagnosis of stroke to achieve recovery without sequela. Therefore, although the infarction of AOP is rare, a rapid and accurate diagnosis is important due to possible morbidity and mortality and can be undertaken using MRI.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the efficacy and complications of albendazole use after surgery in patients with pulmonary hydatid cysts. METHODS: One hundred fifty-three consecutive patients who met the study criteria out of 215 patients who received prophylaxis with albendazole after surgery for isolated pulmonary hydatid cysts in our clinic between January 2011 and December 2020 were analysed retrospectively. RESULTS: Eighty-six out of 153 (56.2%) of cases were male and 67 (43.8%) were female. The average age was 24.6 ± 17.4 (between 3 and 71 years), 76 of them (49.7%) were 18 years old and younger, while 77 (50.3%) were adults. All cases were approached transthoracically and a total of 170 operations were performed on the 153 cases. Fever, weakness and dizziness were reported in only one patient who was given albendazole treatment. A partial increase in liver enzymes was observed in 16 cases (10.5%) after albendazole treatment. Mild leukopoenia and neutropenia were observed in only one of the cases. In 1 case, a second operation was performed 30 months later due to recurrence. Albendazole treatment was not required to be discontinued in any of the cases. Mortality was not observed in any of the cases. Factors such as mean age, cyst size and hospitalization period did not have a statistically significant effect on any changes in liver enzymes tests following albendazole therapy (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Albendazole treatment can safely be used for postoperative prophylaxis in patients with pulmonary hydatid cysts in a controlled manner without causing serious complications. ABSTRACT

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is the most prevalent cause of the systematic inflammatory arthritis that destroys the joints. While the pathogenesis of RA remains to be clarified, the imbalance in the oxidant and anti-oxidant defense system plays a crucial role. This study aims to evaluate oxidant and anti-oxidant levels of RA patients and their impacts on the activity of the disease via in silico studies. 28 patients who had not previously received any treatment for RA and 20 healthy controls were included. Their oxidative stress markers, antioxidant markers, and inflammatory factors were investigated via in silico studies. Compared to the Control Group, serum CRP levels, MDA levels, and XO activities were higher in RA Group. Cu/ZnSOD and GPx activities decreased while CAT activities remained unchanged. Besides, there was a positive correlation between MDA-serum CRP levels but a negative correlation between MDA levels-Cu/ZnSOD activities. Furthermore, we observed a negative correlation between CRP levels and Cu/ZnSOD activities. Based on these results, it was concluded that oxidative stress had increased, the defense system had weakened, and ROS production had increased. Finally, our study results with SOD and CAT activity were confirmed by molecular docking studies.

ABSTRACT

Beta-thalassemia major is a chronic disorder characterised by severe anemia. This patient with beta-thalassemia major is the first magnetic resonance (MR) angiographic case for symmetric mirror aneurysms of the extracranial internal carotid arteries. For diagnosis of vascular complications requires angiographic procedures such as catheter angiography, computed tomography angiography, MR angiography, or Doppler ultrasonography. Time-of-flight MR angiography is a non-invasive useful technique in diagnosis of the aneurysmatic patients.

ABSTRACT

Metastasis in the pineal region is a rare condition. To best of our knowledge, there is no case report of isolated pineal metastasis secondary to acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL). The aim of this study is to show the pineal gland involvement of ALL in a case for the first time in the literature. A 25-year-old male patient diagnosed with ALL 2 years ago presented with headache and visual impairment. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a well-defined solid lesion which was revealed intensive enhancement after contrast. On diffusion-weighted images, the lesion showed significant diffusion restriction. Three months after therapy, control MRI demonstrated a completely resorbed pineal lesion. The pineal region may be a possible site of metastasis and involvement due to the absence of a blood-brain barrier, and should not be overlooked in patients with not only solid cancers but also ALL.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the three-dimensional (3D) volumetric MR arthrographic findings of shoulder joint capacity in patients with primary adhesive capsulitis. METHODS: Thin-section 3D volumetric MR arthrography sequences of the shoulder joint were obtained in 28 patients with clinically and radiologically proven primary adhesive capsulitis and in 25 controls. Volumetric measurements of the total glenohumeral joint capacity, extra-articular contrast material leakage, and the rotator interval, axillary recess, and biceps tendon sheath capacities were performed for the study and control groups. RESULTS: Mean volume of the rotator interval was 7.67 ± 2.6 cm3 in the study group, which was significantly lower than in the control group (12.31 ± 2.5 cm3) (p < 0.0001). Mean volume of the bicipital groove was significantly decreased in the patient group compared to the control group (1.67 ± 0.9 cm3 vs 2.88 ± 0.9 cm3) (p ≤ 0.0001). Mean volume of extra articular contrast material extravasation was 9.93 ± 1.7 cm3 in the patient group, which was significantly higher than in the control group (5.1 ± 1.4 cm3) (p = 0.002). Mean total glenohumeral joint volume was 22.52 ± 1.1 cm3 in the patient group and 26.01 ± 1.2 cm3 in the control group (p = 0.003). CONCLUSION: On 3D volumetric MR arthrographic examination, obliterations in the biceps tendon sheath and rotator interval as well as decreased joint capacity may be useful imaging criteria for diagnosing primary adhesive capsulitis. ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE: In the present study, MR arthrography showed contrast material extravasation in 71% of the patients and showed extra articular contrast material extravasation in 48% of the control subjects. On 3D volumetric MR arthrographic examination, obliterations in the biceps tendon sheath and rotator interval as well as decreased joint capacity may be useful imaging criteria for diagnosing primary adhesive capsulitis.In patients with primary adhesive capsulitis, thin-section 3D volumetric MR arthrography is a useful imaging modality to evaluate both joint capacity and capsular structure.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Transient splenial lesion of the corpus callosum is an oval-shaped lesion in the center of the splenium of the corpus callosum. The disease characteristically occurs with restricted diffusion-weighted images. CASE DESCRIPTION: In the present study, we describe the magnetic resonance imaging findings of a patient with transient diffusion restriction in the splenium of the corpus callosum after cabergoline therapy. CONCLUSIONS: Cabergoline may be an unusual cause of transient splenial lesion of corpus callosum.
