ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: According to international pediatric urinary tract infection (UTI) guidelines, selecting ampicillin/sulbactam or amoxicillin/clavulanate is recommended as the first-line treatment for pediatric UTI. In Korea, elevated resistance to ampicillin and ampicillin/sulbactam has resulted in the widespread use of third-generation cephalosporins for treating pediatric UTIs. This study aims to compare the efficacy of piperacillin-tazobactam (TZP) and cefotaxime (CTX) as first-line treatments in hospitalized children with UTIs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study, conducted at Jeju National University Hospital, retrospectively analyzed medical records of children hospitalized for febrile UTIs between 2014 and 2017. UTI diagnosis included unexplained fever, abnormal urinalysis, and the presence of significant uropathogens. Treatment responses, recurrence, and antimicrobial susceptibility were assessed. RESULTS: Out of 323 patients, 220 met the inclusion criteria. Demographics and clinical characteristics were similar between TZP and CTX groups. For children aged ≥3 months, no significant differences were found in treatment responses and recurrence. Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-positive strains were associated with recurrence in those <3 months. CONCLUSION: In Korea, escalating resistance to empirical antibiotics has led to the adoption of broad-spectrum empirical treatment. TZP emerged as a viable alternative to CTX for hospitalized children aged ≥3 months with UTIs. Consideration of ESBL-positive strains and individualized approaches for those <3 months are crucial.

ABSTRACT

Aluminum-incorporated medium-manganese steel (MMnS) has potential for lightweight transport applications owing to its impressive mechanical properties. Increasing the austenite volume fraction and making microstructural changes are key to manufacturing MMnS. However, the grain boundary character and strain distribution of intercritically annealed low-density MMnS have not been extensively scrutinized, and the effects of crystallographic texture orientation on tensile properties remain ambiguous. Therefore, in this study, the microstructure, microtexture, strain distribution, and grain boundary characteristics of a hot-rolled medium-Mn steel (Fe-0.2 C-4.3 Al-9.4 Mn (wt%)) were investigated after intercritical annealing (IA) at 750, 800, or 850 °C for 1 h. The results show that the 800 °C annealed sample exhibited the highest austenite volume fraction among the specimens (60%). The duplex microstructure comprised lath-type γ-austenite, fine α-ferrite, and coarse δ-ferrite. As the IA temperature increased, the body-centered cubic phase orientation shifted from <001> to <111>. At higher temperatures, the face-centered cubic phase was oriented in directions ranging from <101> to <111>, and the sums of the fractions of high-angle grain boundaries and coincidence-site-lattice special boundaries were significantly increased. The 800 °C annealed sample with a high austenite content and strong γ-fiber {111}//RD orientation demonstrated a noteworthy tensile strength (1095 MPa) and tensile elongation (30%).

ABSTRACT

Recently, multi-resolution pyramid-based techniques have emerged as the prevailing research approach for image super-resolution. However, these methods typically rely on a single mode of information transmission between levels. In our approach, a wavelet pyramid recursive neural network (WPRNN) based on wavelet energy entropy (WEE) constraint is proposed. This network transmits previous-level wavelet coefficients and additional shallow coefficient features to capture local details. Besides, the parameter of low- and high-frequency wavelet coefficients within each pyramid level and across pyramid levels is shared. A multi-resolution wavelet pyramid fusion (WPF) module is devised to facilitate information transfer across network pyramid levels. Additionally, a wavelet energy entropy loss is proposed to constrain the reconstruction of wavelet coefficients from the perspective of signal energy distribution. Finally, our method achieves the competitive reconstruction performance with the minimal parameters through an extensive series of experiments conducted on publicly available datasets, which demonstrates its practical utility.

ABSTRACT

We propose and demonstrate an angularly offset multiline (AOML) dispersive silicon nitride optical phased array (OPA) that enables efficient line beam scanning with an expanded field of view (FOV) and plateau envelope. The suggested AOML OPA incorporates multiline OPA units, which were seamlessly integrated with a 45° angular offset through a thermo-optic switch based on a multimode interference coupler, resulting in a wide FOV that combines three consecutive scanning ranges. Simultaneously, a periodic diffraction envelope rendered by the multiline OPA units contributes to reduced peak intensity fluctuation of the main lobe across the large FOV. An expedient polishing enabling the angled facet was diligently accomplished through the implementation of oblique polishing techniques applied to the 90° angle of the chip. For each dispersive OPA unit, we engineered an array of delay lines with progressively adjustable delay lengths, enabling a passive wavelength-tunable beam scanning. Experimental validation of the proposed OPA revealed efficient beam scanning, achieved by wavelength tuning from 1530 to 1600 nm and seamless switching between multiline OPAs, yielding an FOV of 152° with a main lobe intensity fluctuation of 2.8 dB. The measured efficiency of dispersive scanning was estimated at 0.97°/nm, as intended.

ABSTRACT

Production of medium chain length polyhydroxyalkanoate (mcl-PHA) was attempted using Pseudomonas gessardii NIBRBAC000509957, which was isolated from Sunchang, Jeollabuk-do, Republic of Korea (35°24'27.7"N, 127°09'13.0"E) and effectively utilized acetate and formate as carbon sources. We first evaluated the utilization of acetate as a carbon source, revealing optimal growth at 5 g/L acetate. Then, formate was supplied to the acetate minimal medium as a carbon source to enhance cell growth. After overexpressing the acetate and formate assimilation pathway enzymes, this strain grew at a significantly higher rate in the medium. As this strain naturally produces PHA, it was further engineered metabolically to enhance mcl-PHA production. The engineered strain produced 0.40 g/L of mcl-PHA with a biomass content of 30.43% in fed-batch fermentation. Overall, this strain can be further developed to convert acetate and formate into valuable products.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the characteristics and epidemiological trends of pediatric injuries among patients visiting emergency departments (EDs) on Jeju Island. Method: Employing a community-level serial cross-sectional analysis, we targeted pediatric patients aged 18 years or younger who visited EDs for injuries over a ten-year period. The data, sourced from the Jeju Injury Surveillance System (JISS), facilitated a comprehensive examination of injury characteristics and epidemiological trends. This included an evaluation of the annual incidence and overall trends in pediatric injury cases. Results: The study found toddlers (42.5% of cases) to be the most frequently injured age group. Males were more prone to injuries, with a male-to-female ratio of 1.7:1. Injuries among visitors accounted for 17.3% of cases, with a seasonal spike in Summer, evenings and weekends. Most incidents occurred at home, predominantly accidental in nature, with adolescents more likely to require EMS services. The common mechanisms of injuries were blunt force (49.2%), slips/falls (22.0%), and motor vehicle collisions (13.2%), leading to bruises, cuts, and sprains. Over the decade, a general increase in pediatric injuries was observed. Accidental injuries initially surged but later stabilized, while self-harm/suicide and assault/violence injuries showed a concerning upward trend. Age-specific analysis revealed increasing trends in infants and adolescents. Conclusion: The study underscores the crucial need for targeted injury prevention and resource allocation strategies, particularly for high-risk groups and times, to effectively mitigate pediatric trauma on Jeju Island.

ABSTRACT

Thymoquinone, extracted from the black seeds of Nigella sativa, is a natural substance with highly beneficial effects against various human diseases. In this study, we aimed to construct a Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain that, produce thymoquinone from thymol, a relatively inexpensive substrate. To achieve this, cytochrome P450 from Origanum vulgare was expressed in S. cerevisiae for the bioconversion of thymol to thymoquinone, with the co-expression of cytochrome P450 reductase (CPR) from Arabidopsis thaliana, ATR1. Additionally, flexible linkers were used to connect these two enzymes. Furthermore, modifications were performed to expand the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) space, leading to increased thymoquinone production. After integrating the genes into the chromosome and optimizing the media components, a significant improvement in the thymol-to-thymoquinone conversion rate and yield were achieved. This study represents a possibility of the production of thymoquinone, a bioactive ingredient of a plant, using an engineered microbial cell.

ABSTRACT

Manipulating thermal properties of materials can be interpreted as the control of how vibrations of atoms (known as phonons) scatter in a crystal lattice. Compared to a perfect crystal, crystalline solids with defects are expected to have shorter phonon mean free paths caused by point defect scattering, leading to lower lattice thermal conductivities than those without defects. While this is true in many cases, alloying can increase the phonon mean free path in the Cd-doped AgSnSbSe3 system to increase the lattice thermal conductivity from 0.65 to 1.05 W m-1 K-1 by replacing 18% of the Sb sites with Cd. It is found that the presence of lone pair electrons leads to the off-centering of cations from the centrosymmetric position of a cubic lattice. X-ray pair distribution function analysis reveals that this structural distortion is relieved when the electronic configuration of the dopant element cannot produce lone pair electrons. Furthermore, a decrease in the Grüneisen parameter with doping is experimentally confirmed, establishing a relationship between the stereochemical activity of lone pair electrons and the lattice anharmonicity. The observed "harmonic" behavior with doping suggests that lone pair electrons must be preserved to effectively suppress phonon transport in these systems.

ABSTRACT

Antibody-based therapeutics (ABTs), including monoclonal/polyclonal antibodies and fragment crystallizable region (Fc)-fusion proteins, are increasingly used in disease treatment, driving the global market growth. Understanding the pharmacokinetic (PK) properties of ABTs is crucial for their clinical effectiveness. This study investigated the PK profile and tissue distribution of efineptakin alfa, a long-acting recombinant human interleukin-7 (rhIL-7-hyFc), using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). Totally, four rats were injected intramuscularly with 1 mg/kg of rhIL-7-hyFc containing 14C-rhIL-7-hyFc, which was prepared via reductive methylation. Serum total radioactivity (TRA) and serum rhIL-7-hyFc concentrations were quantified using AMS and ELISA, respectively. The TRA concentrations in organs were determined by AMS. Serum TRA peaked at 10 hours with a terminal half-life of 40 hours. The rhIL-7-hyFc exhibited a mean peak concentration at around 17 hours and a rapid elimination with a half-life of 12.3 hours. Peak concentration and area under the curve of TRA were higher than those of rhIL-7-hyFc. Tissue distribution analysis showed an elevated TRA concentrations in lymph nodes, kidneys, and spleen, indicating rhIL-7-hyFc's affinity for these organs. The study also simulated the positions of 14C labeling in rhIL-7-hyFc, identifying specific residues in the fragment of rhIL-7 portion, and provided the explanation of distinct analytes targeted by each method. Combining ELISA and AMS provided advantages by offering sensitivity and specificity for quantification as well as enabling the identification of analyte forms. The integrated use of ELISA and AMS offers valuable insights for the development and optimization of ABT.

Sika deer inhabiting South Korea became extinct when the last individual was captured on Jeju Island in Korea in 1920 owing to the Japanese seawater relief business, but it is believed that the same subspecies (Cervus nippon hortulorum) inhabits North Korea and the Russian Primorskaya state. In our study, mt-DNA was used to analyze the genetic resources of sika deer in the vicinity of the Korean Peninsula to restore the extinct species of continental deer on the Korean Peninsula. In addition, iSCNT was performed using cells to analyze the potential for restoration of extinct species. The somatic cells of sika deer came from tissues of individuals presumed to be Korean Peninsula sika deer inhabiting the neighboring areas of the Primorskaya state and North Korea. After sequencing 5 deer samples through mt-DNA isolation and PCR, BLAST analysis showed high matching rates for Cervus nippon hortulorum. This shows that the sika deer found near the Russian Primorsky Territory, inhabiting the region adjacent to the Korean Peninsula, can be classified as a subspecies of Cervus nippon hortulorum. The method for producing cloned embryos for species restoration confirmed that iSCNT-embryos developed smoothly when using porcine oocytes. In addition, the stimulation of endometrial cells and progesterone in the IVC system expanded the blastocyst cavity and enabled stable development of energy metabolism and morphological changes in the blastocyst. Our results confirmed that the individual presumed to be a continental deer in the Korean Peninsula had the same genotype as Cervus nippon hortulorum, and securing the individual's cell-line could restore the species through replication and produce a stable iSCNT embryo.

ABSTRACT

Background: To evaluate the current evidence on clear aligners and root resorption using 3D and/or combined 2D and 3D methods from available systematic reviews and meta-analyses and to determine the relationship between root resorption and clear aligners using the AMSTAR 2 tool. Methods: A comprehensive literature search of systematic reviews investigating aligners and root resorption, published up until 31 December 2022, was conducted. The following electronic databases were searched: MEDLINE via PubMed, EMBASE, Google Scholar, Science Direct, Web of Science, Scopus, LIVIVO, and LILACS. There were no language restrictions. The inclusion criteria were restricted to studies focusing on root resorption utilizing either 3D methods exclusively or a combination of 2D and 3D techniques. Data were screened and analyzed for quality using the "A Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews (AMSTAR 2)" tool. Data extraction was conducted independently by two authors. The gathered information was categorized and synthesized narratively based on the primary findings elucidated within the reviews. Results: Out of a total of 1221 potentially eligible studies initially identified, 4 systematic reviews met the inclusion criteria following the exclusion of irrelevant studies. Among these, two systematic reviews (50%) were classified as low-quality, while the remaining two (50%) were deemed to be of critically low quality. Conclusions: Based on the findings of four systematic reviews, the root resorption rate was lower with the use of clear aligners than with fixed aligners. It is advisable to approach the interpretation of this conclusion with caution, as the quality of the available evidence is assessed to be very low. Higher quality systematic reviews are needed to substantiate this conclusion.

ABSTRACT

The oral cavity, a warm and moist environment, is prone to the proliferation of microorganisms like Candida albicans (C. albicans), which forms robust biofilms on biotic and abiotic surfaces, leading to challenging infections. These biofilms are resistant to conventional treatments due to their resilience against antimicrobials and immune responses. The dynamic nature of the oral cavity, including the salivary flow and varying surface properties, complicates the delivery of therapeutic agents. To address these challenges, we introduce dendritic microparticles engineered for enhanced adhesion to dental surfaces and effective delivery of antifungal agents and antibiofilm enzymes. These microparticles are fabricated using a water-in-oil-in-water emulsion process involving a blend of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) random copolymer (RCP) and PLGA-b-poly(ethylene glycol) (PLGA-b-PEG) block copolymer (BCP), resulting in particles with surface dendrites that exhibit strong adhesion to oral surfaces. Our study demonstrates the potential of these adhesive microparticles for oral applications. The adhesion tests on various oral surfaces, including dental resin, hydroxyapatite, tooth enamel, and mucosal tissues, reveal superior adhesion of these microparticles compared to conventional spherical ones. Furthermore, the release kinetics of nystatin from these microparticles show a sustained release pattern that can kill C. albicans. The biodegradation of these microparticles on tooth surfaces and their efficacy in preventing fungal biofilms have also been demonstrated. Our findings highlight the effectiveness of adhesive microparticles in delivering therapeutic agents within the oral cavity, offering a promising approach to combat biofilm-associated infections.

ABSTRACT

2'-Fucosyllactose (2'-FL), one of the major human milk oligosaccharides, was produced in several engineered microorganisms. However, the low solubility of α-1,2-fucosyltransferase (α1,2-FucT) often becomes a bottleneck to produce maximum amount of 2'-FL in the microorganisms. To overcome this solubility issue, the following studies were conducted to improve the soluble expression of α1,2-FucT. Initially, hydrophobic amino acids in the hydrophilic region of the 6 α-helices were mutated, adhering to the α-helix rule. Subsequently, gfp11 was fused to the C-terminal of futC gene encoding α1,2-FucT (FutC), enabling selection of high-fluorescence mutants through split-GFP. Each mutant library was screened via fluorescence activated cell sorting (FACS) to separate soluble mutants for high-throughput screening. As a result, L80C single mutant and A121D/P124A/L125R triple mutant were found, and a combined quadruple mutant was created. Furthermore, we combined mutations of conserved sequences (Q150H/C151R/Q239S) of FutC, which showed positive effects in the previous studies from our lab, with the above quadruple mutants (L80C/A121D/P124A/L125R). The resulting strain produced approximately 3.4-fold higher 2'-FL titer than that of the wild-type, suggesting that the conserved sequence mutations are an independent subset of the mutations that further improve the solubility of the target protein acquired by random mutagenesis using split-GFP.

BACKGROUND: Lifestyle changes, such as those related to the COVID-19 pandemic, including alterations in physical activity and dietary habits, are known to affect pregnancy outcomes. In particular, suboptimal intrauterine conditions during pregnancy are known to influence not only fetal growth but also growth during infancy. However, research on the impact of the environmental changes caused by the COVID-19 pandemic on the growth of infants and children during their early years is lacking. To address this issue, this study evaluated the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on obesity in infants. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study used the data collected from the Korea National Health Insurance (KNHI) claims database. The data of 1985,678 women who delivered infants between 2015 and 2021 were collected. Women who delivered during the pandemic and those who delivered during the pre-pandemic period were matched in a 1:1 frequency-matched pair procedure for factors such as age, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes mellitus, mode of delivery, gestational age at delivery, offspring sex, and birth weight. Finally, 197,580 women were enrolled. The weight and head circumference of infants (4-6 months of age) of the COVID-19 pandemic group were compared with those of the pre-pandemic group. RESULTS: The COVID-19 pandemic group infants exhibited significantly higher weight and prevalence of obesity at 4-6 months of age compared to infants in the pre-pandemic group. After adjustment for covariates, pandemic group infants had a higher risk of obesity (odds ratio: 1.54, 95% confidence interval: 1.51-1.57) compared to the pre-pandemic group infants. CONCLUSION: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a notable impact on the weight of infants aged 4-6 months. This suggests that pandemic conditions may influence the growth of newborns, underscoring the importance of monitoring and assessing trends in the growth of infants born during such crises.

ABSTRACT

Thermoelectric technology has potential for converting waste heat into electricity. Although traditional thermoelectric materials exhibit extremely high thermoelectric performances, their scarcity and toxicity limit their applications. Zinc oxide (ZnO) emerges as a promising alternative owing to its high thermal stability and relatively high Seebeck coefficient, while also being earth-abundant and nontoxic. However, its high thermal conductivity (>40 W m-1K-1) remains a challenge. In this study, we use a multi-step strategy to achieve a significantly high dimensionless figure-of-merit (zT) value of approximately 0.486 at 580 K (estimated value) by interfacing graphene quantum dots with 3D nanostructured ZnO. Here, we show the fabrication of graphene quantum dots interfaced 3D ZnO, yielding the highest zT value ever reported for ZnO counterparts; specifically, our experimental results indicate that the fabricated 3D GQD@ZnO exhibited a significantly low thermal conductivity of 0.785 W m-1K-1 (estimated value) and a remarkably high Seebeck coefficient of - 556 µV K-1 at 580 K.

Biomatrix-based reference materials (RMs) improve the quality of laboratory test results by better representing actual samples. However, a matrix RM of ephedrine (EP) for threshold substances that require accurate analysis results has not yet been developed. Therefore, this study aimed to develop an in-house matrix RM for EP and subsequently apply it to analytical procedures. During the development of the in-house matrix EP RM, the system underwent homogeneity and stability studies. Additionally, it was subjected to interlaboratory comparison study in 11 laboratories, including 10 World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)-accredited laboratories and our laboratory. Stability testing revealed no significant changes in the RM characteristics. For homogeneity, 10 random batches out of 200 were analyzed to confirm the uniformity within and between bottles. These results, combined with data from 11 laboratories, ensured retroactive validation. The traceability value of the in-house matrix EP RM was assigned as 9.83 ± 0.57 µg/mL (k = 2) by interlaboratory comparison studies and traceable uncertain evaluation. The feasibility of this method as a single calibration standard was confirmed in two laboratories. This substance is reliable and consistent for quality control during EP quantification, ensuring accurate and trustworthy outcomes. Consequently, this study establishes a framework and guidelines for producing in-house matrix RMs and serves as a reference for generating similar matrix RMs in other contexts.

Background & Aims: Adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs) can worsen cardiometabolic risk factors in women, raising their likelihood of developing cardiometabolic diseases at a young age after their initial pregnancy. Nevertheless, there are limited data on the risk of newly developing metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) in women who have had APOs. This study aimed to evaluate the risk of new-onset MASLD after experiencing APOs. Methods: Singleton pregnant women who underwent national health screenings 1 year before pregnancy and 1 year after delivery were included in this study. APOs were defined as the presence of at least one of the followings: hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), preterm birth, low birth weight, and placental abruption. The primary outcome was new-onset MASLD based on the presence of APOs. Results: Among 80,037 study participants, 9,320 (11.6%) experienced APOs during pregnancy. Women who experienced APOs had an increased risk of developing new-onset MASLD after delivery even after adjustments for various covariates (adjusted odds ratio [OR] 1.58, 95% CI 1.45-1.72). In particular, women who experienced either HDP or GDM showed a significantly increased risk of developing new-onset MASLD (adjusted OR 2.20, 95% CI 1.81-2.67, for HDP and adjusted OR 1.83, 95% CI 1.65-2.03, for GDM). Moreover, there was a tendency toward an increased risk of new-onset MASLD according to the number of APOs (p <0.001 for trend of odds). Conclusions: APOs were associated with the risk of new-onset MASLD after delivery. Specifically, only HDP or GDM were identified as risk factors for new-onset MASLD. Impact and implications: This nationwide cohort study confirms that postpartum women with a history of adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs) are at an increased risk of developing metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). These findings may bring us one step closer to understanding the exact mechanisms underlying such an important association between prior APOs and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk among postpartum women. This bidirectional association between APOs and MASLD highlights the importance of considering pregnancy history in assessing CVD risk in women. It suggests a need for closer monitoring and lifestyle interventions for women with a history of APOs to reduce the risk of MASLD and subsequent CVD complications.

Background and objectives: Musculoskeletal (MSK) pain significantly impacts physical activity and quality of life in older adults, potentially influencing mortality. This study explored the relationship between MSK pain, physical activity, muscle mass, and mortality among older adults. Material and Methods: We studied 1000 participants in the Korean Longitudinal Study on Health and Aging (KLoSHA), a prospective, population-based cohort study of people aged 65 years or older. Survival status was tracked over a 5-year period. Correlations between low back pain (LBP), knee pain, regular exercise, appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM), and other variables were analyzed. Logistic regression analyses were used to identify independent risk factors for mortality. Results: Of the total participants, 829 (82.9%) survived over a 5-year period. Survivors tended to be younger, had a higher BMI, and were more active in regular exercise. In contrast, non-survivors exhibited a higher prevalence of both LBP and knee pain, along with increased instances of multiple MSK pains. Lower ASM correlated moderately with LBP and knee pain, whereas higher ASM was associated with regular exercise. There was a moderate correlation between LBP and knee pain, both of which were associated with a lack of regular exercise. Age, sex, ASM, and regular exercise were significant predictors, even though MSK pain itself did not directly predict all-cause mortality. Conclusions: This study demonstrated the independent association between ASM, regular exercise, and mortality. Although MSK pain did not directly correlate with all-cause mortality, the non-survivor group had higher levels of both single and multiple MSK pains. Recognizing the interplay of MSK pain, physical activity, and muscle mass for older adults, the research underscores the need for holistic strategies to enhance health outcomes in older individuals with MSK pain.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of shoulder pain and analyze its association with socio-demographic factors, agricultural work-related conditions, and biomechanical factors among farmers on Jeju Island. We utilized initial survey data from the Safety for Agricultural Injury of Farmers' cohort study involving adult farmers on Jeju Island. The presence and characteristics of shoulder pain, socio-demographics, agricultural work-related conditions, and biomechanical factors were assessed using semi-structured questionnaires. A total of 1206 participants were analyzed for prevalence and associated risk factors using frequency and multivariate logistic regression analyses. The overall prevalence of shoulder pain was 17%. Multivariate logistic regression analysis, adjusted for significant socio-demographic and agricultural work-related condition variables, revealed that stress level, type of farming, and experiencing an agricultural injury within the preceding year were significantly associated with shoulder pain (stress level: "occasional," adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 1.581; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.079-2.318; "frequent," aOR, 1.964; 95% CI, 1.205-3.200; and "extreme," aOR, 2.999; 95% CI, 1.480-6.074 vs "rarely"; type of farming: "orchard," aOR, 0.82; 95% CI, 0.597-1.124; "livestock," aOR, 0.225; 95% CI, 0.079-0.641 vs "field"; and experienced an agricultural injury within the past year: "yes," aOR, 2.078; 95% CI, 1.269-3.405). In addition, 3 biomechanical factors significantly contributed to shoulder pain: activities requiring significant power such as shoveling, pickaxing, and hammering; repetitive use of a particular body part; and constant elevation of the arm above the head. The findings highlight the importance of postural education, injury prevention, and psychological support in managing shoulder pain among farmers.
