ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Understanding the impact of malnutrition on innate immune response in Plasmodium falciparum (Pf)-infected subjects is critical for malaria control. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This study aims to investigate the nutritional status and innate immune response of Pf-infected subjects in Lagos, Nigeria. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 1183 patients with a history of fever or axillary temperature ≥37°C were screened microscopically for Pf at Ijede General Hospital, Lagos, Nigeria. Malnutrition was determined according to the U.S National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) as stunting, wasting, or underweight when the Z-score is <-2 in the participants aged <20 years. Serum levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß), and IL-12 were determined by capture ELISA while hematological parameters were measured using an automated hematology system. RESULTS: A total of 384 volunteers were positive for Pf, of which 114 were <20 years with a median age of 10 years. Overall malaria prevalence was 20.89%. The malnutrition rate was 89.5%; 24 (21.05%) were stunted, 30 (26.32%) were underweight, and 48 (42.11%) were wasted. Pro-inflammatory cytokine responses were not affected by the type of malaria. TNF-α was higher in participants <5 years (P = 0.001) and in malnourished patients (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Together, it could be deduced that nutritional status influences Plasmodium falciparum malaria outcomes and progression pattern.


Résumé Contexte:Comprendre l'impact de la malnutrition sur la réponse immunitaire innée chez les sujets infectés par Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) est essentiel pour la lutte contre le paludisme.Buts et objectifs:Cette étude vise à étudier l'état nutritionnel et la réponse immunitaire innée des sujets infectés par Pf à Lagos, au Nigeria.Matériels et méthodes:Un total de 1183 patients ayant des antécédents de fièvre ou une température axillaire ≥37°C ont fait l'objet d'un dépistage microscopique de Pf à l'hôpital général Ijede, Lagos, Nigeria. La malnutrition a été déterminée selon le National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) des États-Unis comme un retard de croissance, une émaciation ou une insuffisance pondérale lorsque le score Z est <-2 chez les participants âgés de moins de 20 ans. Les taux sériques de facteur de nécrose tumorale alpha (TNF-α), d'interleukine-1ß (IL-1ß) et d'IL-12 ont été déterminés par capture ELISA, tandis que les paramètres hématologiques ont été mesurés à l'aide d'un système d'hématologie automatisé.Résultats:Au total, 384 volontaires étaient positifs pour le Pf, dont 114 étaient âgés de moins de 20 ans avec un âge médian de 10 ans. La prévalence globale du paludisme était de 20,89 %. Le taux de malnutrition était de 89,5 %; 24 (21,05 %) souffraient d'un retard de croissance, 30 (26,32 %) d'une insuffisance pondérale et 48 (42,11 %) d'émaciation. Les réponses des cytokines pro-inflammatoires n'ont pas été affectées par le type de paludisme. Le TNF-α était plus élevé chez les participants de moins de 5 ans ( P = 0,001) et chez les patients souffrant de malnutrition ( P < 0,05).Conclusion:On peut en déduire que l'état nutritionnel peut influencer les résultats et le schéma de progression du paludisme.

ABSTRACT

In this work, the potential of ZnSO4·7H2O in NiP sulphate electrolyte deposited on mild steel under constant optimum pH of 5, current density of 1 A/cm2, stirring rate of 200 rpm, and varying time parameter between 10, 15, 20, and 25 min were studied using the electrodeposition method. The microstructure properties and corrosion resistance characteristics were analyzed using a scanning electron microscope enhanced with an energy-dispersive spectroscope and potentiodynamic polarization apparatus, respectively. The codeposited was subjected to different media test rig of 0.5 M H2SO4 and 3.5% NaCl to examine the susceptibility effect. The results pointed out that there is a stable mass weight gain as the time increases, which facilitates the formation of dispersed crystal build-up and homogeneous NiPZn content within the interface. A remarkable corrosion property was also noticed with deposits of highest time effect, which is invariably a factor of solid bonding seen at the surface lattice.

ABSTRACT

Globally, environmental challenges have been recognised as a matter of concern. Among these challenges are the reduced availability and quality of drinking water, and greenhouse gases that give rise to change in climate by entrapping heat, which result in respirational illness from smog and air pollution. Globally, the rate of demand for the use of freshwater has outgrown the rate of population increase; as the rapid growth in town and cities place a huge pressure on neighbouring water resources. Besides, the rapid growth in anthropogenic activities, such as the generation of energy and its conveyance, release carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, warming the planet. Polymer nanocomposite has played a significant role in finding solutions to current environmental problems. It has found interest due to its high potential for the reduction of gas emission, and elimination of pollutants, heavy metals, dyes, and oil in wastewater. The revolution of integrating developed novel nanomaterials such as nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes, nanofibers and activated carbon, in polymers, have instigated revitalizing and favourable inventive nanotechnologies for the treatment of wastewater and gas separation. This review discusses the effective employment of polymer nanocomposites for environmental utilizations. Polymer nanocomposite membranes for wastewater treatment and gas separation were reviewed together with their mechanisms. The use of polymer nanocomposites as an adsorbent for toxic metals ions removal and an adsorbent for dye removal were also discussed, together with the mechanism of the adsorption process. Patents in the utilization of innovative polymeric nanocomposite membranes for environmental utilizations were discussed.

ABSTRACT

In this work, data on the effect of process parameter and particle concentration on the developed Ni-SiO2 produced via electrocodeposition were presented. The influence of current density from 0.6 to 1.0 A/dm2 and applied time difference from 10 to 25 min observed on the hardness characteristics and texture performance of the deposited alloy was checked. The weight gained and thickness of surface coverage was acquired and could be further used as a protoype for designing a ternary alloy coating system for oil and gas services.

ABSTRACT

In this study, a comprehensive effect of particle loading and optimised process parameter on the developed zinc electrolyte was presented. The depositions were performed between 10-30 min at a stirring rate of 200 rpm at room temperature of 30 °C. The effect of coating difference on the properties and interfacial surface was acquired, at a voltage interval between 0.6 and 1.0 V for the coating duration. The framework of bath condition as it influences the coating thickness was put into consideration. Hence, the electrodeposition data for coating thickness, and coating per unit area at constant distance between the anode and cathode with depth of immersion were acquired. The weight gained under varying coating parameter were acquired and could be used for designing and given typical direction to multifunctional performance of developed multifacetal coatings in surface engineering application.

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the green biosynthesis of gold (Au) and silver-gold alloy (Ag-Au) nanoparticles using cell-free extract of Bacillus safensis LAU 13 strain (GenBank accession No: KJ461434). The biosynthesized AuNPs and Ag-AuNPs were characterized using UV-Vis spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Evaluation of the antifungal activities, degradation of malachite green, anti-coagulation of blood, and thrombolysis of human blood clot by the biosynthesized nanoparticles were investigated. The AuNPs and Ag-AuNPs had maximum absorbance at 561 and 545 nm, respectively. The FTIR peaks at 3318, 2378, 2114, 1998, 1636, 1287, 446, 421 cm-1 for AuNPs; and 3310, 2345, 2203, 2033, 1636, 1273, 502, 453, 424 cm-1 for Ag-AuNPs indicated that proteins were the capping and stabilization molecules in the biosynthesized nanoparticles. The particles were fairly spherical in shape with size of 10-45 nm for AuNPs and 13-80 nm for Ag-AuNPs. Moreover, energy dispersive X-ray analysis of AuNPs revealed gold as the most prominent metal in the AuNPs solution, while silver and gold were the most prominent in the case of Ag-AuNPs. Selected area electron diffraction showed the biosynthesized nanoparticles as crystal structures with ring shape pattern. AuNPs and Ag-AuNPs displayed growth inhibitions of 66.67-90.78% against strains of Aspergillus fumigatus and A. niger at concentration of 200 µg/ml , and remarkable degradation (> 90%) of malachite green after 48 h. Furthermore, the nanoparticles prevented coagulation of blood, and also completely dissolved blood clots, indicating the biomedical potential of AuNPs and Ag-AuNPs in the management of blood coagulation disorders. This is the first report of the synthesis of AuNPs and Ag-AuNPs using a strain of B. safensis for biomedical and catalytic applications.

ABSTRACT

Biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using nest extract of paper wasp (Polistes sp) was investigated in this work. The AgNPs were characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and evaluated for antibacterial, antifungal, dye degradation, blood anticoagulation, and blood clot dissolution (thrombolytic) activities. The crystalline polydispersed AgNPs with size range of 12.5-95.55 nm absorbed maximally at 428 nm and showed anisotropic structures of sphere, triangle, hexagon, rod, and rhombus. The FTIR data showed prominent peaks at 3426 and 1641 cm-1, which indicate the involvement of phenolics compounds and proteins in the synthesis of AgNPs. The prominence of Ag in the EDX spectra showed that indeed, AgNPs were formed. The AgNPs showed potent antibacterial activities (12-35 mm) against three multi-drug strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella granulomatis. While the growth of Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus niger was completely suppressed, the AgNPs produced growth inhibition of 75.61 % against Aspergillus fumigatus at 100 µg/ml. Furthermore, the AgNPs degraded malachite green to the tune of 93.1 %. The AgNPs also prevented coagulation of blood, while it completely dissolved preformed blood clots within 5 min showing the potent anticoagulation and thrombolytic activities. This study, which is the first of its kind to use nest extract of paper wasp for the synthesis of nanoparticles, has shown that the biosynthesized AgNPs could be deployed for biomedical and catalytic applications.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate the ameliorative role of Tetrapleura tetraptera (Schum and Thonn) Taub (T. tetraptera) leaf in hyperglycemia with associated conditions like oxidative stress, kidney damage and disorders in lipid metabolism. Methods:Five groups of five rats each intraperitoneally received the following treatment schedules for 7 d: untreated normal control, untreated alloxan-diabetic control, diabetic treated with glibenclamide, normal rats treated with extract (50 mg/kg) and diabetic rats treated with the extract. Evaluations were made for fasting blood sugar, body weight changes, malondialdehyde, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, bilirubin, superoxide dismutase, catalase, lipid profile, packed cell volume, hemoglobin, urea and creatinine in all the rats. Results:Whereas the untreated diabetic rats showed a significant decrease (P Conclusions:Methanolic extract of T. tetraptera leaves possesses a potent capacity for treatment of diabetes and the accompanying complications, including oxidative stress and hyperlipidemia.

The effects of vitamins C and E on layer chickens transported by road for 6 h during the hot dry season were investigated. Two experimental groups consisting of thirty Shika Brown layers were separately administered vitamins C and E orally just before transportation, while another 30 layers, which were only given sterile water, served as control. Blood samples analyzed before and after transportation in the control layers showed a decrease (p<0.05) in total white blood cell, (p<0.01) lymphocyte and monocyte values, and a significant (p<0.05) and (p<0.001) increase in the values of eosinophils and heterophils post-transportation, respectively. In the experimental groups, post-transportation values of total white blood cells, eosinophils and monocytes were not different (p>0.05) from those obtained before transportation. Heterophil/lymphocyte values were highest in the control group. The result showed that transportation was stressful for the control layers. Post-transportation egg production was not significantly (p>0.05) different in the vitamin E treated group, but values recorded for the vitamin C and control groups were significantly (p<0.05) and (p<0.001) reduced compared to pre-transportation. In conclusion, vitamins C and E administration ameliorated the adverse effect of road transportation stress during the hot dry season.
