ABSTRACT

Spontaneous and initiated by hydrogen peroxide chemiluminescence was evaluated before and after freezing of the CSF from 20 patients with various spinal tumors and 10 controls with intervertebral lumbar osteochondrosis. The intensity of the above chemiluminescence was found significantly different in tumors and osteochondrosis. Cryotreatment induced marked changes in CSF chemiluminescence, especially in extramedullary spinal tumors. CSF treatment with hydrogen peroxide entailed alterations in free radical oxidation which can serve an additional criterion in combined diagnosis of spinal cord tumors.

ABSTRACT

Traumatic hematomas of the posterior cranial fossa are a rarity. The paper is concerned with clinical cases of chronic intracerebellar hematoma characterized by general cerebral and cerebellar symptoms. Early diagnosis and surgical intervention made it possible to attain a favourable outcome in the immediate postoperative period.

ABSTRACT

The article discusses a new method for recognising tumors of the spinal cord--spontaneous and photoinduced chemoluminescence of the cerebrospinal fluid. Twenty-seven patients with tumors of the spinal cord of various localization and histological structure and 15 individuals of the control group were examined. Statistically significant differences in chemoluminescence in extra- and intramedullary tumors and in the control group were revealed. The effect of intensified luminescence of the cerebrospinal fluid in exposure to ultraviolet radiation was demonstrated, especially in cases with extramedullary tumors. The described method is an auxiliary criterion in c.s.f. diagnosis of spinal tumors.

ABSTRACT

The data on 25 children patients with acute traumatic intracranial hematomas are presented. This accounts for 2.9% of a total of intracranial hematomas and 0.6% of a total of children with craniocerebral trauma. Correct diagnosis and early surgical intervention combined with therapeutic measures ensured favorable outcome in 76% of the cases.

ABSTRACT

A rare case of the giant chondroma is presented. The patient, 29, carried it over the last 24 years. At his admittance to the neurosurgery department the tumor attained huge dimensions and occupied the basement of the anterior cranial fossa on the left side penetrating into the orbital plates, frontal sinus and ethmoidal labyrinth. Surgery was performed yielding a good result.

ABSTRACT

The author discusses experience in the study of regional spinal blood filling and vascular tension by rheomyelography in the stages of neurosurgical intervention in 90 patients with primary tumors of the spinal cord. Statistically reliable data were obtained on blood filling of the spinal cord vessels and vascular tension according to the position of the tumor in relation to the diameter and length of the spinal cord, the histological structure of the tumor, and the degree of subarachnoid space block.

ABSTRACT

Changes in the cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) flow were analyzed in 196 patients with spinal cord tumors of differing localization and histological structure. In 76.5% of the cases there were different variants of CSF flow disorders, namely, complete block in 33.7% and partial block in 42.8% of the cases. The nature of CSF flow disorders depended on the size of tumors, their histological structure and the relationship of the tumor to the cross-section area and the surface of the spinal cord. Yet, in 23.5% of the cases the subarachnoidal space was patent despite marked spinal neurological symptomatology. This fact shows that the complete patency of the subarachnoidal space does not rule out spinal cord tumor, which necessitates the conduction of comprehensive clinical examination in suspected cases.

ABSTRACT

An analysis of 221 clinical observations showed that in 23.1%, spinal cord tumours were characterized by a remitting course. The pathogenesis of remissions was rather complicated and was partly determined by ischemic impairments of the spinal blood circulation and by repeated exacerbations of the spinal pathological process in the medulla. A prolonged remitting course of spinal cord tumours was to a certain degree associated with a marked protective reaction of the body when the growth of tumour cells might be inhibited due to "biological regression".

ABSTRACT

The main clinical varieties of spinal cord and equine tail tumors are reviewed. Of 221 cases, the progressive course of the disease was recorded in 76,9%, slow-progressive course was observed in 68,1% and rapid-progressive in 8,8% of cases. It is stressed that in the presence of the progressive course of the disease there may occur different manifestations of the tumorous process of the spinal cord, the examination of which makes it possible to improve the diagnosis, particularly in the early stage of the spinal oncological process.

ABSTRACT

Spinal subarachnoid hemorrhages and multiple hemorrhages into the tissue of the tumor were diagnosed in 11 (5%) of 221 patients with primary tumors of the spinal cord. The clinical picture was characterized by sudden sharp pain in the spine corresponding in localization to the level of the spinal cord tumor. The stroke-like development of the neurological symptoms alters the classical course of spinal cord tumors considerably and makes it difficult to recognize the pathological process. Vascular disorders predominate in patients with meningiomas of the spinal cord in the upper and middle thoracic segments. The pathogenesis of spinal subarachnoid hemorrhages and hemorrhages into the tumor tissue in primary tumors of the spinal cord is discussed.

ABSTRACT

Ischemic spinal apoplexy was diagnosed in 20 of 221 patients (9%) with extramedullary tumors of the spinal cord. The clinical picture in most cases was characterised by rapid development of motor and sensory disorders. Patients with tumours of meningovascular origin localized on the anterior and anterolateral surfaces of the spinal cord prevailed. Ischemic apoplexy was encountered most frequently when the tumours of the spinal cord were localized in the "critical zone" in D3-5 respectively.
