ABSTRACT

In the research 4 compounds: Iodofenphos, Propetamphos, Dioxacarb and Permethrin and two commercial insecticides: Pibutoks Super (Permethrin) and Safrotin 10 WP (Propetamphos) were used to control anophelini females. The chemicals were tested in the laboratory on mosquitoes caught in the nature and the contact method was employed. Propetamphos and Permethrin at concentrations 0.05% and 0.1%, after 2 hours of 1 hour exposure reduced the mosquitoes in 96% and 99.9% respectively. Iodofenphos and Dioxacarb, even at concentration 0.1%, after 24 hours of 1 hour exposure caused barely 78.3% and 83.9% mortality of these insects. Both insecticides tested, in the 7 days period after the spraying, caused more than 97% reduction of the Anopheles population in the cow-sheds.

ABSTRACT

Species composition Anophelini were investigated in the years 1986/87 and Culicini in 1987/88 at the part of the coastal region. The mosquitoes were caught from April till October, every week, at 47 stations (water reservoirs, free nature and cattle-sheds). Total 16,194 mosquitoes (2452 Anophelini and 13,742 Culicini) were caught. They belong to 26 species of 5 genera: Anopheles (4 spp.), Aedes (15 spp.), Coquillettidia (1 sp.), Culex (1 sp.) and Culiseta (5 spp.). The highest numbers of Anophelini were observed in July (1986) and in September (1987). The aggressiveness toward man showed by Culicini was found to be highest in the second half of May and at the end of July.

ABSTRACT

In the years 1981-1985 a total of 19,651 specimens mosquitoes were collected in the area of investigation--Lake Zarnowieckie environs. In that amount 15,072 specimens were identified. There were found 26 species belonging to 4 genera: Anopheles, Aedes, Culex and Culiseta. Some of the species found, such as Aedes cantans, Aedes punctor or Culex pipiens are troublesome pests and particularly aggressive to man, possible vectors of many diseases. In the cowsheds there were found 12 species, the most numerous were the specimens of Anopheles genera (92.1% of the collection). The species captured in the open area by means of the man bait were 17 in number. The highest aggressiveness to man was shown by Ae. punctor, Ae. cinereus, Ae. cantans and Ae. annulipes. In the water bodies among the preimaginal forms caught there identified were 22 species. The majority of them were: Culex pipiens and Aedes punctor. A seasonal activity of the Culicidae preimaginal forms was also observed. The considerable environmental changes caused by the construction of the nuclear power plant, and the work of the pump-storage power plant are, as it seems, the main cause of the changes in the species domination observed in this region. Any finau conclusions, however, can be drawn after the further investigations are completed.

ABSTRACT

In the environs of the Lake Zarnowieckie in 1982-1985 systematic investigations on haematophagic biting midges of genus Culicoides were conducted. A total of 2,188 specimens of Culicoides were caught, among which the occurrence of 26 species was stated. Up to now in this area a total of 28 species was observed. In the cattle spaces 478 specimens (7 species) were caught, with use of the light trap--554 specimens (16 species), with the help of entomological net--79 specimens (5 species) as well as from the soil samples by the method of the laboratory rearing 1077 specimens (24 species) were obtained. The most suitable habitat for the biting midges turned out to be the shores of water bodies (mainly of streams). The seasonal abundance of the Culicoides preimaginal forms in the soil during the two first research seasons reflected characteristic features of the insects biology--the two peaks occurrence took place: spring peak and summer peak. In 1984 and 1985 the number of the biting midges decreased significantly. However, the final conclusions concerning the reasons, the character as well as the determination of the possible influence of environmental changes (as a result of construction and operating of two modern power plants) can be drawn after conduct of the further research in future.
