ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To identify all reports of randomised clinical trials in the Journal and compare our findings with reports available in Medline. METHODS: We handsearched the Scandinavian Journal of Rheumatology with supplements for the years 1955-1997 to identify reports of randomised clinical trials and controlled clinical trials. RESULTS: We identified 445 trial reports. In Medline, 134 of these trials (30%) were indexed as randomised or controlled trials; an additional 50 trials (11%) were available in Medline but were indexed differently. Thus, 261 of the trials (59%) we identified were not indexed in Medline; most of these trials were published in supplements to the Journal. CONCLUSION: Handsearching of medical journals for randomised trials can be a worthwhile effort. Clinicians and patients will become better informed about the value of different treatment options and researchers will reduce their risk of performing trials that are unnecessary.

ABSTRACT

Nursing in the People's Republic of China, like elsewhere, has undergone monumental changes during the 20th century. This paper focuses on one of those changes by examining the professional socialization process of the first class from the first baccalaureate in nursing (BSN) programme in China since 1952. These data from this first BSN class are part of a larger study on professional socialization in which data were collected from four of the recently established 11 BSN programmes in China. To put these data into a historical context, some highlights of Chinese nursing history are noted. These will help us to understand the present-day situation in this the world's most populous nation.

ABSTRACT

Using interview data from adult men and women who participated in an ongoing study of self-care, the research focused on the experience of mundane ailments as a promising topic for research in the social psychology of health and illness. Phenomenological analysis of respondents' accounts of everyday ailments generated concepts of 'the physical self', which expands interactive or dramaturgical concepts, and 'the health biography'. These concepts, when linked to analysis of interaction lead to a more dynamic sociology of health, illness, care and cure.

ABSTRACT

The concept of care, integral to medical sociology and to the sociology of health and illness, suggests new challenges in two key areas of this field: 1) within professional socialization, an examination of socialization to ethical thinking, behavior, and identity among professional caregivers, building on the substantial literature already accumulated; 2) in the arena of hidden or informal care providers, an analysis of male and female informal providers and the productive work, other than care, done by these individuals. In both analyses, as well as in all medical sociology and sociology of health and illness, gender, race, and class require more attention. Both analytic endeavors influence the substance and the contours of the field.
