ABSTRACT

The composition of macro endoparasites associated with the lizard Norops fuscoauratus (Squamata) was analysed in two localities in the Atlantic Forest on the northeast of Brazil between December 2012 and July 2015. 74 specimens of N. fuscoauratus were examined and five species of helminths were reported, being: (a) for the population of Pernambuco: Cystacanth (Prevalence=37.5%), Physaloptera retusa Rudolphi, 1819 (Prevalence=4.16%), larva of flatworm (Prevalence=2.08%), Rhabdias sp. (Prevalence=2.08%) and Strongyluris oscari Travassos, 1923 (Prevalence=2.08%), and (b) of Alagoas: S. oscari (Prevalence=17.85%) and Rhabdias sp. (Prevalence=3.57%). The differences in the composition of endoparasites in the two populations are attributed to individualities of environments occupied by the lizards. The collection period does not influence the abundance of parasites, but when associated with sex, there was a positive correlation with the abundance of helminths, with more females than males being infected with parasites in the rainy season.

ABSTRACT

Spontaneous abortion is considered a public health problem having several causes, including infections. Among the infectious agents, bacteria of the vaginal microbiota and Ureaplasma parvum have been associated with abortion, but their participation needs to be further elucidated. This study aims to evaluate the influence of Mollicutes on the development of spontaneous abortion. Women who underwent spontaneous abortion and those with normal birth (control) were studied. Samples of cervical mucus (CM) and placental tissue were collected to identify Mollicutes using the quantitative polymerase chain reaction methodology. Eighty-nine women who had a miscarriage and 20 women with normal pregnancies were studied. The presence of Mollicutes in placental tissue increased the chance of developing miscarriage sevenfold. The prevalence of U. parvum in women who experienced spontaneous abortion was 66.3% in placental tissue. A positive association was observed between the detection of U. parvum in samples of placental tissue and abortion. There was a significant increase in microbial load in placental tissue for M. hominis, U. urealyticum and U. parvum compared to the control group. Detection of U. parvum in CM in pregnant women can ascend to the region of the placental tissue and trigger a spontaneous abortion.

ABSTRACT

Kinins, and bradykinin in particular, can affect electrolyte transport in different segments of the intestine, thus being able to stimulate chloride secretion. Since the stomach is the main chloride secretory unit in the gastrointestinal tract, we have investigated the effect of bradykinin on acid secretion in the isolated frog (Rana catesbeiana) gastric mucosa. Bradykinin [2 x 10(-8) to 2 x 10(-6) M] and des-Arg9-bradykinin [2 x 10(-9) to 2 x 10(-7) M] were able to stimulate acid secretion in a dose-dependent manner. The bradykinin [2 x 10(-7) M] and des-Arg9-bradykinin (2 x 10(-8) M]-induced acid secretion was unaffected by Thi5,8,D-Phe7-bradykinin [2 x 10(-7) to 2 x 10(-5) M], a B2-kinin receptor antagonist. Interestingly, the B1-kinin receptor antagonist, des-Arg9-(Leu8)-bradykinin [2 x 10(-7) to 2 x 10(-5) M] blocked both bradykinin- and des-Arg9-bradykinin-stimulated acid secretion. Although the kininase I inhibitor, D-L-mercapto-methyl-3-guanidino-ethyl-propanoic acid [2 x 10(-6) and 2 x 10(-5) M] had no effect on des-Arg9-bradykinin-induced acid secretion, it inhibited the response to bradykinin. We conclude that bradykinin requires, at least in part, hydrolysis to des-Arg9-bradykinin to increase gastric acid secretion and that its effect is mediated by B1-kinin receptors.
