ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT This study investigated the effect of an intervention on perceptions of barriers for the bicycle use in commuting to work by industrialists. 876 men (mean age = 35.4 ± 9.5 years) from a metallo-mechanical company participated. The sample was randomized into a control and intervention group (438 participants in each group) considering the use or not of the bicycle when commuting to work. The intervention had 23 meetings of approximately 30 minutes each, spread over six months, based on the Transteoric Model of Behavior Change (TMBC). The perception of barriers to bicycle use was assessed using the "scale to assess the perception of barriers to bicycle use". Descriptive statistics, chi-square, Wilcoxon test, Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney were applied for analysis, adopting p < 0.05. There was a statistical decline in perception of barriers to bicycle use in the intervention group (Z = -2.218; p = 0.027). When stratified by age group, greater effectiveness of the intervention was observed in reducing in the perception of barriers in individuals aged 30-39 years (Z = -2.637; p = .008). For the other age groups, there were no significant differences. It is concluded that interventions based on TMBC are effective to decrease the perception of barriers for bycicle use in the commuting to work.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: An in-depth understanding of the relationship between food consumption and physical activity is relevant since these behaviours could influence each other, while both have an effect on obesity and chronic diseases. In this context, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of various combinations of food consumption (fruits, vegetables, sweets and snacks) on the associations with PA domains (leisure and commute) among Brazilian industrial workers. SUBJECTS/METHODS: This is part of a cross-sectional national survey developed in Brazil using data from the "Lifestyle and Leisure Habits of Industrial Workers" project. A total of 52,774 workers (response rate: 90.6%) responded to a validated questionnaire about the frequency of their consumption of fruit, vegetables, sweets and snacks, their practice of LTPA and active commuting. The answers were analysed by multilevel regression, controlled by sociodemographic behaviour and the presence of hypertension, diabetes and overweight. RESULTS: Workers with a simultaneously adequate consumption of fruit, vegetables, sweets and snacks were 2.29 (1.74; 2.99 p-value < 0.001) more likely to perform LTPA. In the full model, there was no association among any of the combinations of food consumption and active commuting. CONCLUSION: A better food consumption behaviour was reported among workers who practiced leisure physical activity when compared to those who did not.

ABSTRACT

Neonatal exposure to high-dose 17ß-estradiol (E2) affects the morphology and physiology of sex and accessory sex organs in the long term. In this study, we examined the effects of E2 imprinting on male sexual behavior, fertility, and the number of androgen receptor (AR)-expressing cells in the hypothalamus. E2-treated males showed copulatory behavior represented by mounts and/or intromissions, demonstrating the preservation of aspects of male behavior. They had slightly increased latency for first intromission and a reduced number of ejaculations, associated with a 50% reduction in the fertility index. AR expression in the hypothalamus was assessed by RT-PCR, western blotting, and immunohistochemistry. Treated rats had a significantly lower ventral prostate (VP) weight, demonstrating the efficacy of the treatment. The AR mRNA and protein content in the hypothalamus of E2-treated animals was reduced to the levels of females. AR-expressing cell counts in the ventromedial, anterior medial preoptic, paraventricular nuclei, and preoptic areas were different from control males, and similar to those of females. In conclusion, E2 imprinting resulted not only in ill-developed sexual organs, but also affected sexual behavior, resulting in a female-type hypothalamus, at least with respect to the abundance of AR mRNA and protein and the number of AR-expressing cells in important regions/tracts.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Aims: Investigated the relation between eating habits or physical activity and weekend television viewing time, regardless of weekday television viewing in Brazilian workers. Methods: A representative cross-sectional study was conducted to measure the relation between weekend television viewing time and dietary indicators and physical activity across different domains in 47,477 workers. A questionnaire measured the time spent watching television per day on the weekend, physical activity indicators across different domains and eating habits. Absolute and relative frequencies and multinomial logistic regression adjusted were used to describe and identify the relationship between time spent watching television on the weekend and physical activity indicators or eating habits. Results: Workers who were physically active in the household (OR=1.09 [95%CI=1.04; 1.15] and OR=1.11 [95%CI=1.06; 1.16]) and leisure-time domains (OR=1.28 [95%CI=1.22; 1.35] and OR=1.30 [95%CI=1.24; 1.36]) were more likely to watch television ≥ 2 and ≥ 4 hours on a weekend day, respectively, than those watching television ≤ 1 hour/day. Consuming sweets (OR=1.30 [95%CI=1.22; 1.39]) and soft drinks (OR=1.11 [95%CI=1.03; 1.19]) was related to television watching ≥ 4 hours on a weekend day. However, workers who consumed fruits (OR=0.81 [95%CI=0.76; 0.85]) and vegetables (OR=0.91 [95%CI=0.86; 0.96]) daily were less likely to spend ≥ 4 hours watching television on a weekend day. Conclusion: We conclude that increased television viewing time on weekends, regardless of weekday television time, is related to leisure-time and household physical activity and with unhealthy eating habits in workers. Interventions focusing on the leisure-time may be an important alternative for health promotion in workplaces.

ABSTRACT

An unhealthy body composition has been linked with chronic diseases and premature deaths that could be prevented. It is desirable to understand how modifiable behaviors are linked to the body composition of industrial workers, and identify risk groups among the population to plan inter-ventions and policies. The aim of the study was to identify the sociodemographic, physical activity, sedentary behavior, and nutritional correlates of the body mass index (BMI) of Brazilian industrial workers. Data were used from the "Lifestyle and Leisure Habits of Industrial Workers" study (n = 45,508), conducted between 2006 and 2008, in 24 of the 27 Brazilian states. Gender, physical activ-ity practice, television viewing, consumption of sweetened drinks, weight, and height were reported by the participants, and BMI was calculated. Linear regression analysis was conducted to identify the factors associated with BMI. Women had a lower BMI when compared to men (-1.63 kg/m2, CI95%: -1.71; -1.56). Age and television viewing were positively associated with BMI and physically inactive adults had a BMI of 0.22 kg/m2 (CI95%: 0.15; 0.29) greater than those who were active dur-ing leisure time. There was no association between BMI and sweetened drink consumption. Usually, BMI is higher among men, older individuals, those who watch more hours of TV daily, and those who do not practice physical activity during leisure time. When possible, it is suggested to promote the practice the practice of physical activity during leisure time without directing actions to comply with the recommendation of 150 minutes per week with the understanding that some activity is better than none, as well as stimulate the reduction of TV viewing time among workers

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective Investigate the clustering of four unhealthy food habits (low intake of fruits, low intake of vegetables, high intake of candy, and high intake of fried snacks), and to identify the association between the number of these clustered habits and sociodemographic variables. Methods This was a cross-sectional representative study of industrial workers from 24 Federative Units in Brazil conducted between 2006 and 2008. The low weekly intake of fruits and vegetables (<5 days/week) and high weekly intake of candy and fried snacks (≥5 days/weeks) were evaluated using a validated questionnaire. Simultaneity was analyzed with stratification by sex, calculating the Observed (O) and Expected (E) prevalence and the O/E ratio for each of the 16 possible food intake combinations. Results Among the 47,477 workers studied, in both men and women, the simultaneous presence of high weekly intake of candy and fried snacks(O/E=3.58; 95%CI=3.12-4.10 and O/E=2.17; 95%CI=1.76-2.62) and of the four unhealthy food habits (O/E=2.32; 95%CI=2.01-2.66 and O/E=4.02; 95%CI=3.44-4.65) exceeded the expected percentages if these foods were consumed separately. When compared to subjects without or with only one unhealthy food habit, the combination of the four negative dietary behaviors was more frequent among women, workers with a lower education level, and those living without a partner. Conclusion Unhealthy food habits tend to cluster together in both sexes, suggesting a strong interaction, particularly for the four unhealthy food habits together, especially among women, less educated workers and without a partner.

ABSTRACT

Abstract International studies have shown that motor coordination was inversely associated with adiposity, and directly associated with other health outcomes. However, there are few national studies addressing this issue and the results are divergent. The aim of this study was to analyse the relationship between physical activity and body mass index (BMI) with the level of motor coordination performance in children. This cross-sectional study was performed with children aged 5-7 years old. The level of motor performance was evaluated by normative data of the motor quotients assessed by KTK test. BMI was calculated by body weight and height. The level of physical activity was assessed by a questionnaire applied by interviewers with parents. Statistical analysis was performed by Spearman and Pearson test, and multiple linear regression. The sample included 665 children with mean age of 6.29 (± 0.75) years old, and 52.6% were male. It was verified which total motor quotient (TMQ) was directly related to physical activity score (0.096; p = 0.013) and inversely related to BMI (-0.284; p<0.001). The relationship between BMI and TMQ was moderated by family income. BMI was inversely related to the level of motor performance, and the score of physical activity was directly related to the level of motor performance in children in a higher family income.

ABSTRACT

Walking is a great health promotion strategy due to its beneficial effects. Objetive: To identify the prevalence of walking for leisure and for commuting to work and its association with sociodemographic factors among 47,477 Brazilian workers. Walking and sociodemographic factors were obtained from a self-reported questionnaire. Poisson regression was used. Among men, walking for leisure was more frequent in those who were older, live with a partner, had a higher level of education and income, and worked in the Southeastern region of Brazil. When commuting, it was more prevalent among single men, who had a lower level of education and income and worked in the Southern region of this country. Among women, walking for leisure was more common in those who lived with a partner, had no children, and worked in the Southern region. There was an association between the outcome and age, education and family income. Regarding commuting, it was more prevalent among older individuals, without a partner, with a lower level of education and income, and working in the Southern region. Walking was associated with sociodemographic characteristics, with differences between sexes

ABSTRACT

The aim of the study was to investigate the association of the physical activity domains and types of physical activity practiced during leisure time with the occurrence of stress in workers. This is a cross-sectional survey, conducted from 2006 to 2008, with a representative sample of industrial workers (n = 47, 477; 69% men). Data were collected via questionnaire. For statistical analysis, a Poisson regression with adjustment for robust variance was used in Stata 13.0. Women who were physically active during leisure time (19.9%; IC95%: 19.0−20.7) had lower occurrences of stress than those who were physically inactive in this domain (14.2%; IC95%: 13.3−15.2). Among men, those active at home (11.6; IC95%:11.1−12.0 vs. 12.9%; IC95%:12.4−13.5), during leisure time (10.2%; IC95%: 9.8−10.6 vs. 15.1%; IC95%: 14.4−15.7), and at work (11.7%; IC95%: 11.3−12.1 vs. 13.3%; IC95%: 12.6−14.0) had lower occurrences of stress than their peers. As the number of domains that contained physical activity increased, stress occurrence tended to decrease for both sexes. The types of leisure time physical activities associated with a lower occurrence of stress in women were sports (11.1%), gymnastics/weight lifting (13.2%), and dance (14.5%); similar results were observed for men who engaged in jogging (9.0%), sports (9.7%), and walking (10.1%). Physical activity in the leisure time domain, for women and men workers, including sports practice among women and jogging among men, were associated with lower stress occurrences.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the moderating effect of gross family income on the association between demographic indicators and active commuting to work in Brazilian adults. METHODS: Secondary analysis of the survey "Lifestyle and leisure habits of industry workers" (n=46,981), conducted in 24 Brazilian states (2006-2008). Self-reported information was collected with a previously tested questionnaire. Crude and adjusted logistic regression models were applied to analyze the association between sociodemographic variables (sex, age, marital status, number of children, education, country area and company size) and active commuting to work in different strata of gross family income. To test the moderating effect, an interaction analysis was applied. RESULTS: The proportion of active commuters among low-, medium- and high-income workers was 40.7% (95%CI:40.0%;41.5%), 27.0% (95%CI:26.3;27.6%) and 11.1%, (95%CI:10.5%;11.7%), respectively. The moderating effect of gross family income was confirmed. Men were more likely (OR:1.22 95%CI:1.12;1.32) to commute actively than women among low-income individuals. Active commuting was less likely among older workers in low-(OR30-39:0.90 95%CI: 0.83;0.98; OR≥40: 0.76 95%CI: 0.68;0.85) and medium-income strata (OR30-39:0.87 95%CI:0.80;0.95; OR≥40:0.84 95%CI:0.76;0.93) and among married individuals in high-income strata (OR:0.72 95%IC:0.61;0.84). Adults with lower education (ORhigh:10.80 95%CI:8.47;13.77), working in the south (ORhigh:1.93 95%CI:1.53;2.44) and in small companies (ORlow:2.50 95%CI:2.28;2.74) were more likely to commute actively; however, the magnitude of these associations differed at each income strata. CONCLUSION: There was an inverse association between gross family income and active commuting. Gross family income acts as a moderator of the association between demographic indicators and active commuting.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective Life satisfaction is a cognitive judgment of some specific areas in life and depends on a comparison between the life circumstances of the individual and a standard established by it. The objective of this study was to construct a scale of satisfaction with life by Item Response Theory (IRT). Methods For the creation of the scale we used the questionnaire “Life Style and Habits Leisure Industry Workers” and Item Response Theory based on the graduated response model proposed by Samejima. The study enrolled 47,477 Brazilian workers in the industry. Results The scale had seven items the questions of the “health indicators and preventive behaviors” with issues related to health status, quality of sleep, stress level, feelings of sadness or depression and perception of life at home, at work and play. Conclusion There are few studies that have their focus directed to life satisfaction in Brazil, and those who somehow discussed, only included a specific question about happiness or life satisfaction, especially in studies on subjective well-being. The results show that IRT was efficient to create the scale, especially those individuals with intermediate measuring life satisfaction.

ABSTRACT

This study focused on the association between socio-demographic characteristics and three sedentary behaviors among industrial workers in Brazil. Data were analyzed on 47,477 workers from 24 Brazilian states, collected by questionnaires from 2006 to 2008. Individual and simultaneous presence of ≥ 4 hours of TV time per day, commuting by car or motorcycle, and sitting most of the time at work were investigated, as well as associations between these behaviors and gender, age, schooling, and family income. Simple and multiple binary logistic regression were used. Older workers and those with more schooling and higher income had increased odds of presenting two or all of the three target behaviors. Associations between gender and sedentary behaviors depend on the specific behavior. Such information can be useful for planning interventions to reduce sedentary behavior, with better targeting and more effectiveness in reaching different population subgroups.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness of an educational intervention on active commuting by bicycle. METHODS: An intervention study with workers from a metallurgical industry in Santa Catarina state, Brazil was carried out in 2011. A total of 464 individuals were placed in the intervention group (IG) and 468 in the control group (CG). The intervention consisted of strategies based on the transtheoretical model and stages of behavior change. The intervention group took part in activities for 6 months, including 23 meetings. The statistical analysis included intergroup comparison (IG × CG) at baseline and after the intervention. Intragroup analysis was performed 6 months after the intervention. Student's t-test, chi-square, and McNemar tests were used to analyze the data. RESULTS: Of the original total, 876 individuals (94%) participated in the study. The proportion of participants that used bicycles to commute to work (IG) increased significantly from baseline (45.3%) to the final interventional period (47.5%). No difference was found between the CG and the IG group after the interventional period. CONCLUSION: We suggest taking these findings into consideration in further studies to understand better the role of educational intervention on active commuting by bicycle.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Physical inactivity in each domain (leisure, work, commuting, and household) is not completely independent. This study aimed to describe the clustering of physical inactivity in different domains and its association with sociodemographic factors among Brazilian industrial workers. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional, population-based study using data from 23 Brazilian states and the Federal District collected via questionnaires between 2006 and 2008. Physical inactivity in each domain was defined as nonparticipation in specific physical activities. Clustering of physical inactivity was identified using the ratio of the observed (O) and expected (E) percentages of each combination. Multinomial logistic regression was used to identify sociodemographic factors with the outcome. RESULTS: Among the 44,477 interviewees, most combinations exceeded expectations, particularly the clustering of physical inactivity in all domains among men (O/E = 1.37; 95% CI: 1.30; 1.44) and women (O/E = 1.47; 95% CI: 1.36; 1.60). Physical inactivity in 2 or more domains was observed more frequently in women, older age groups, individuals living without a partner, and those with higher education and income levels. CONCLUSIONS: Physical inactivity tends to be observed in clusters regardless of gender. Women and workers with higher income levels were the main factors associated with to be physically inactive in 2 or more domains.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To estimate the prevalence of overweight in industry workers and its association with demographic and socioeconomic factors and soft drink intake (including type). Methods: This is a nationwide cross-sectional cohort survey of "Lifestyle and leisure habits of industry workers" conducted between 2006 and 2008 in 24 Brazilian federate units. The participants answered a previously tested questionnaire and self-reported their weight and height. Statistical analyses consisted of crude and adjusted Poisson regression. Results: Males and females had overweight prevalences of 45.7% (95%CI=45.1; 46.2) and 28.1% (95%CI=27.4; 28.9) respectively. Older and married individuals and those working in medium-sized and large factories were more likely to be overweight. Males with higher education levels and gross family incomes were also more likely to be overweight, but not females. Finally, men (PR=1.24; 95%CI=1.13; 1.36) and women (PR=1.40; 95%CI=1.22; 1.61) who consumed diet/light soft drinks were also more likely to be overweight than those who did not consume soft drinks. Conclusion: More than one-third of the workers were overweight according to their self-reported weight and height, and the prevalence of overweight was higher in males. Demographic and socioeconomic variables and diet/light soft drink intake were associated with overweight. These data may be helpful for the development of actions that reduce the risk of overweight in this population. .

ABSTRACT

Lifestyle characteristics can modify the self-rated health of young people, but additional prospective evidence is needed. This study examined the association between changes in lifestyle and self-rated health among students. A secondary analysis of the "Saúde na Boa" project was performed, considering data from 984 students (14-24 years old, 56.9% girls) who were randomly selected from 20 public schools in Recife and Florianopolis, Brazil. Two sets of data 9-months apart were collected, and self-reported data about lifestyle characteristics (physical activity practices, TV watching time, dietary habits, alcohol and tobacco consumption, and sleep time) and self-rated health (poor, fair, good, very good and excellent) were obtained. Differences in self-rated health between collections were categorized as negative changes, stable (no changes) or positive changes. Adjusted multinomial logistic regression analysis was used (p < 0.05). After adjustment for confounding variables, increasing the weekly frequency of active commuting to school (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 2.06) and intake of fruits/fruit juice (aOR = 1.81), as well as reducing the monthly frequency of alcohol consumption (aOR = 2.17), was significantly associated with positive changes in self-rated health. Consumption of sweets was also associated with stable self-rated health. In conclusion, our prospective evidence demonstrated that changes in lifestyle characteristics appear to be essential to ensure or generate positive self-rated health in youth.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Economic and technological improvements can help increase screen time use among adolescents, but evidence in developing countries is scarce. The aim of this study was to examine changes in TV watching and computer/video game use patterns on week and weekend days after a decade (2001 and 2011), among students in Santa Catarina, southern Brazil. METHODS: A comparative analysis of two cross-sectional surveys that included 5 028 and 6 529 students in 2001 and 2011, respectively, aged 15-19 years. The screen time use indicators were self-reported. 95% Confidence intervals were used to compare the prevalence rates. All analyses were separated by gender. RESULTS: After a decade, there was a significant increase in computer/video game use. Inversely, a significant reduction in TV watching was observed, with a similar magnitude to the change in computer/video game use. The worst trends were identified on weekend days. CONCLUSIONS: The decrease in TV watching after a decade appears to be compensated by the increase in computer/video game use, both in boys and girls. Interventions are needed to reduce the negative impact of technological improvements in the lifestyles of young people, especially on weekend days.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this report was to describe an innovative curricular experience that was performed in the bachelor in Physical Education offered by the University of Pernambuco (Brazil). A course entitled "Physical Activity and Mental Health" was offered to the bachelor students with the idea of fulfill the existing gap between the professional preparation and the intervention in the mental health care area. The course was organized to discuss the role of physical activity in the prevention and control of mental illness as well as the professional intervention of physical educators in this field. Activities performed during the lessons were guided by a critical pedagogy approach which means the students were challenged to think about this field of intervention in different ways. In addition, the course offered the opportunity for extramural observational and experiential activities in specialized centers of primary mental health care, a differential characteristic of this proposed curricular component.

ABSTRACT

This study analyzed the prevalence of and identified the factors associated with inactive commuting to work among industrial workers from Pernambuco, Brazil. Data for this cross-sectional study were gathered from a sample of 1,910 industrial employees by using a previously validated questionnaire. The measure of inactive commuting to work was based on self-reported time and mode of transportation to work on most days of a typical week. Data analysis was carried out through binary logistic regression using a hierarchical approach to include variables in the model. It was observed that 84.2% of workers were inactive commuters. After adjustment for demographic, socio-economic, and other health-related factors in both men and women, it was found that family income and company size were directly associated with inactive commuting to work. Moreover, among men, inactive commuting was directly associated with schooling level and was associated with a diagnosis of diabetes. It was concluded that the prevalence of inactive commuting to work was high and directly associated with individual, social, and organizational factors.
