ABSTRACT

The development of a disposable electrochemical paper-based analytical device (ePAD) is described using a novel formulation of conductive ink that combines graphite powder, polyester resin, and acetone. As a proof of concept, the proposed sensor was utilized for paracetamol (PAR) sensing. The introduced ink was characterized via morphological, structural, and electrochemical analysis, and the results demonstrated appreciable analytical performance. The proposed ePAD provided linear behavior (R2 = 0.99) in the concentration range between 1 and 60 µmol L-1, a limit of detection of 0.2 µmol L-1, and satisfactory reproducibility (RSD ~ 7.7%, n = 5) applying a potential of + 0.81 V vs Ag at the working electrode. The quantification of PAR was demonstrated in different pharmaceutical formulations. The achieved concentrations revealed good agreement with the labeled values, acceptable accuracy (101% and 106%), and no statistical difference from the data obtained by HPLC at the 95% confidence level. The environmental impact of the new device was assessed using AGREE software, which determined a score of 0.85, indicating that it is eco-friendly. During the pharmacokinetic study of PAR, it was found that the drug has a maximum concentration of 23.58 ± 0.01 µmol L-1, a maximum time of 30 min, and a half-life of 2.15 h. These results are comparable to other studies that utilized HPLC. This suggests that the combination of graphite powder and polyester resin can transform conductive ink into an effective ePAD that can potentially be used in various pharmaceutical applications.

ABSTRACT

Resultado: Osso neoformado: GI = 38,16 ± 15,44%; GII = 55,77 ± 16,75%; GII I = 60,28 ± 11,45%. Controle = 45,11 ± 11,09%. Remanescente do enxerto: GI = 7,02 ± 5,36% e GII = 16,59 ± 9,56%.

Introduction: Inorganic bovine bone is the most used graft in dentistry, with the disadvantage of long integration time into the receptor bed. Bisphosphonates have been used to modulate the quantity and quality of regenerated bone and decrease graft integration time. Objective: To evaluate the effect of alendronate sodium bisphosphonate (ALN) 0.5%, associated or not with Inorganic bovine bone, in the repair of bone defects. Material and method Two bone defects were made in the calvaria of 12 rabbits, and the left/experimental cavity was filled with: GI = Inorganic bovine bone (Bio-Oss®); GII = Bio-Oss® + 0.5% ALN; GIII = 0.5% ALN; and the right cavity/blood clot control. The animals were killed at 60 days after surgery. Through histomorphometric analysis, the percentage of newly formed bone and remnant biomaterial relative to the total area of the defect was calculated. Result: Neoformed bone: GI = 38.16 ± 15.44%, GII = 55.77 ± 16.75%; GIII= 60.28 ± 11.45%; Control=45,11 ± 11,09%. Graft remnant: GI = 7.02 ± 5.36% and GII = 16.59 ± 9.56%. There was no difference in the percentage of newly formed bone between the groups (ANOVA p = 0.15512; Tukey's test F = 2.089). The percentage of graft remnant was also statistically similar between groups GI and GII (Tukey's test F = 5019). Conclusion: Topical use of 0.5% ALN solution alone or associated with lyophilized bovine bone did not change the percentage of bone neoformation, nor the degradation of graft granules.

ABSTRACT

The etiology of facial fractures is directly related to the studied country, varying according to the socioeconomic, cultural condition of the population, besides the period of investigation. The objective of the present study is to evaluate the epidemiological characteristics of the prevalence, treatment modalities and complications rates of maxillofacial fractures in a hospital in the state of Espírito Santo, over a period of 5 years. A total of 428 patients presented a facial fracture, with a prevalence of males (436), with a mean age of 40 years. Regarding the number of fractures, 291 individuals suffered fractures only in the fixed skeleton, 97 only in the mandible, and 48 suffered fractures in both fixed and mandibular skeletons. The predominant anatomical site in fixed skeletal fractures was zygomatic complex (56.6 %), orbit (31.9 %) and nose (29.2 %); while in the mandible the condyle (33.8 %), body (17.9 %) and angle (13.1 %). The frequent etiology was falls, physical aggression, sports accidents. Regarding the type of treatment, in fixed skeleton 192 fractures were treated conservatively and 303 by surgery. Already in the mandible, the numbers were 43 and 143, respectively. In addition, 24 patients progressed with some type of complication in one or more operated sites. It is worth mentioning that epidemiological assessments provide important support in the creation of legislation in the attempt to reduce important for the establishment of clinical and research priorities, since risk factors and patterns of presentation can be identified. Accordingly in an attempt to reduce these rates.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine whether there is a need for ophthalmologists to perform a specialized assessment after the occurrence of orbital fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-three patients (64 orbits) diagnosed with orbital fractures were evaluated preoperatively (up to 24 h after the trauma) and in 90-day postoperative period. RESULTS: Eight injuries required either specialized clinical or surgical ophthalmologic intervention. Of these patients, four required emergency eye surgery: two patients with corneal lacerations had lesions larger than 2 mm. Two patients had extensive ocular lesions after multiple traumas with uveal exposure and without light perception. Another four patients (iridodialysis associated with lens subluxation, anterior uveitis, direct lesion on the optic nerve, and chorioretinitis sclopetaria) received conservative management. CONCLUSION: This study concluded that a specialized ophthalmologic examination as soon as possible is important, particularly in cases in which the signs and symptoms of severity are associated. The non-ophthalmologist surgeon must have the basic medical knowledge required to provide basic primary ophthalmologic care and to discern the severity of the injury.

ABSTRACT

Hemangioma is a benign neoplasm of common vascular origin that, although asymptomatic, may cause compression of neighboring structures, ulcerations or bleeding. In the mouth, the sites most affected by this pathological alteration are the tongue, the lips, and the jugal mucosa. The objective of this paper is to report a clinical case of hemangioma, to highlight the clinical aspects and treatment of choice. Patient AJF, 59- year-old, male, came to the Stomatology Clinic of FAESA with a nodule on the left side of the upper lip of smooth surface and softened consistency. The positive diascopy showed a slight pallor in the lesion purple coloration and the diagnostic hypothesis was hemangioma. Among the possible treatment alternatives, the use of sclerosing agent was chosen due to its low cost, efficiency and aesthetically favorable clinical result. The patient is still in proservation without the need of a new intervention and satisfied with the aesthetic result (AU).
