ABSTRACT

Brain glucose hypometabolism and neuroinflammation are early pathogenic manifestations in neurological disorders. Neuroinflammation may also disrupt leptin signaling, an adipokine that centrally regulates appetite and energy balance by acting on the hypothalamus and exerting neuroprotection in the hippocampus. The Goto-Kakizaki (GK) rat is a non-obese type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) animal model used to investigate diabetes-associated molecular mechanisms without obesity jeopardizing effects. Wistar and GK rats received the maintenance adult rodent diet. Also, an additional control group of Wistar rats received a high-fat and high-sugar diet (HFHS) provided by free consumption of condensed milk. All diets and water were provided ad libitum for eight weeks. Brain glucose uptake was evaluated by 2-deoxy-2-[fluorine-18] fluoro-D-glucose under basal (saline administration) or stimulated (CL316,243, a selective ß3-AR agonist) conditions. The animals were fasted for 10-12 h, anesthetized, and euthanized. The brain was quickly dissected, and the hippocampal area was sectioned and stored at -80°C in different tubes for protein and RNA analyses on the same animal. GK rats exhibited attenuated brain glucose uptake compared to Wistar animals and the HFHS group under basal conditions. Also, the hippocampus of GK rats displayed upregulated leptin receptor, IL-1ß, and IL-6 gene expression and IL-1ß and the subunit of the transcription factor NF-κB (p-p65) protein expression. No significant alterations were detected in the hippocampus of HFHS rats. Our data indicated that a genetic predisposition to T2DM has significant brain deteriorating features, including brain glucose hypometabolism, neuroinflammation, and leptin signaling disruption in the hippocampal area.

ABSTRACT

The objective was to test the response of Urochloa brizantha cv. Marandu in monoculture and in silvopastoral system (SPS), at two distances from the trees, and define the best defoliation height for SPS. Four intermittent defoliation heights (25, 35, 45 and 55cm) and two distances from tree lines (2.5 and 5.0m) were evaluated in the SPS with a control defoliated with 25cm in full sun. The experiment was performed in a randomized block design with 3 replicates in a 4 × 2 + 1 split plot scheme. The control had higher forage accumulation (46.9kg/ha. day) than the SPS (31.1kg/ha. day). The bulk density was also higher in the control (0.89mg/cm³) than in SPS (0.48mg/cm³). The percentage of leaves (78.06%) and leaf/stem ratio (6.04) did not differ among the treatments. In the SPS, there was an increase of 31.07% in forage accumulation from 25 to 55cm. The forage accumulation and bulk density of Urochloa brizantha cv. Marandu in monoculture is greater than in the SPS regardless of the management goal and the distance from trees. The goal of 55cm in the SPS presented greater forage accumulation.(AU)


O objetivo foi testar a resposta de pastos de Urochloa brizantha cv. Marandu em monocultivo e em sistema silvipastoril (SSP), a diferentes distâncias das árvores, bem como definir qual altura de desfolhação é a mais indicada para manejo em SPS. Foram avaliadas quatro alturas de desfolhação intermitente (25, 35, 45 e 55cm) e duas distâncias das linhas de árvores (2,5 e 5,0m), no SPS, e uma testemunha desfolhada com 25cm, em pleno sol. O delineamento foi em blocos ao acaso, com três repetições, em esquema de parcelas subdivididas 4 × 2 + 1. O controle apresentou maior acúmulo de forragem (46,9kg/ha.dia) que a média do SSP (31,1kg/ha.dia). A densidade volumétrica da forragem do controle (0,89mg/cm³) foi maior que a do SSP (0,48mg/cm³). A porcentagem de folhas (78,06%) e a relação folha/colmo (6,04) não diferiram entre os tratamentos. O aumento das alturas de 25 para 55cm no SSP resultou em aumento de 31,07% no acúmulo de forragem. O acúmulo e a densidade volumétrica da forragem são maiores no monocultivo, independentemente da meta de manejo e da distância das árvores no sistema silvipastoril. A meta de 55cm no silvipastoril apresenta maior acúmulo de forragem.(AU)

ABSTRACT

A total of 1006 duck catfish Ageneiosus ucayalensis were collected from a ria river system of eastern Amazonia, of which 733 were females and 273 males, a sex ratio 2·69:1. Condition factors of males were higher than those of females and size at first sexual maturity (L50 ) was 12·8 cm for females and 11·8 cm for males. The relative frequency of mature specimens and gonad condition indices indicate that the breeding season is short and coincides with the rainy season.

ABSTRACT

This study investigates the influence of the flood pulse on the reproductive biology of the auchenipterids Tocantisia piresi (Miranda Ribeiro, 1920) and Auchenipterus nuchalis (Spix & Agassiz, 1829) from the middle Xingu River in the Brazilian state of Pará. The specimens were collected every three months between April, 2012, and January, 2014, covering four distinct periods (flood, ebb, dry, and filling). The sex ratio, size at first maturity, gonadosomatic index, and condition factor were analysed in the two species, and evaluated in the context of the different hydrological periods. A total of 897 specimens of T. piresi were collected, of which 467 were female, and 430 males, and 383 A. nuchalis (286 females and 97 males). In T. piresi, the sex ratio was biased only in the filling and ebb periods, whereas in A. nuchalis, it departed significantly from the expected ratio of 1:1 in all periods, with a predominance of females. The female T. piresi mature at a smaller size than the males, with the opposite of the pattern being recorded in A. nuchalis. In T. piresi, the breeding peak was observed during the low water periods, whereas in A. nuchalis, the peak was recorded in the flood periods. Male and female T. piresi presented similar positively allometric growth rates, whereas in A. nuchalis, growth was negatively allometric, but rates were different between genders. A higher condition factor was recorded in the females of both species during the ebb period. Overall, the results of this study reveals distinct flood pulse effects on the reproductive parameters of the two auchenipterid species studied; for A. nuchalis the spawning seems to happen at the flood period and for T. piresi at the dry season of the middle Xingu River.

Analisamos a influência do pulso de inundação na biologia reprodutiva dos auchenipterídeos Tocantisia piresi (Miranda Ribeiro, 1920) e Auchenipterus nuchalis (Spix & Agassiz, 1829) no médio rio Xingu, no Estado do Pará, Brasil. Os indivíduos analisados foram coligidos por meio de capturas trimestrais entre os meses de abril de 2012 a janeiro de 2014 contemplando os quatro períodos hidrológicos (cheia, vazante, seca e enchente). A proporção sexual, o tamanho de primeira maturidade sexual, o índice gonadossomático e o fator de condição foram analisados para as duas espécies, e avaliados em função dos diferentes períodos hidrológicos. Foram coletados 897 espécimes de T. piresi, sendo 467 fêmeas e 430 machos, e 383 A. nuchalis, sendo 286 fêmeas e 97 machos. Para T. piresi a proporção sexual variou apenas nos períodos de enchente e vazante, enquanto que para A. nuchalis a proporção variou entre todos os períodos hidrológicos, com uma proporção maior de fêmeas do que machos. Em relação ao tamanho mínimo da primeira maturação sexual, as fêmeas de T. piresi maturam com tamanho inferior aos dos machos, enquanto que o inverso foi registrado para A. nuchalis. Para T. piresi a maior atividade reprodutiva foi registrada nos períodos de seca e enchente, enquanto que para A. nuchalis a maior atividade foi registrada na enchente e cheia. Machos e fêmeas de T. piresi não diferiram entre os padrões de crescimento, ambos apresentaram crescimento alométrico positivo. Já para A. nuchalis, o padrão de crescimento diferiu entre os sexos, embora ambos tenham apresentado crescimento alométrico negativo. Para as fêmeas de ambas as espécies foram observadas um maior fator de condição no período da vazante. Assim, nossos resultados evidenciam que o pulso de inundação pode influenciar de maneiras distintas os parâmetros reprodutivos destas duas espécies de auchenipterideos, pois a desolva de A. nuchalis parece acontecer no período de cheia e de T. piresi para a época de seca do Médio Rio Xingu.

ABSTRACT

Rocking curve imaging (projection and section X-ray topography) has been used to study the generation and propagation of defects at the junctions between and above the seed crystals in mono-like silicon ingots. The images of different kinds of defects such as precipitates, dislocations and twins in the integrated intensity, full width at half-maximum and peak position maps resulting from the experiment have been studied. The qualitative and quantitative information that can be extracted from these maps, in particular the contrast of the images of the various defects, is discussed. These defects have a detrimental effect on solar cell efficiency and their detailed investigation allows clues to be obtained in order to improve the growth process. This work shows that synchrotron X-ray diffraction imaging techniques, because of their high angular resolution (<10-4°) and large field of view (several mm2), constitute a powerful tool for investigating the initial stages of growth of directionally solidified mono-like silicon.

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the benefits of Cu preexposition on Hg effects on behavioral tests, acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity and Hg, and essential metal contents in the cerebrum and cerebellum of neonate rats. Wistar rats received (subcutaneous) saline or CuCl2 ·2H2O (6.9 mg/kg/day) when they were 3 to 7 days old and saline or HgCl2 (5.0 mg/kg/day) when they were 8 to 12 days old. Mercury exposure reduced the performance of rats in the negative geotaxis (3-13 days) and beaker test (17-20 days), inhibited cerebellum AChE activity (13 days), increased cerebrum and cerebellum Hg (13 days), cerebrum Cu (13 days), and cerebrum and cerebellum Zn levels (33 days). The performance of rats in the tail immersion and rotarod tests as well as Fe and Mg levels were not altered by treatments. Copper prevented all alterations induced by mercury. These results are important to open a new perspective of prevention and/or therapy for mercury exposure.

ABSTRACT

The studies on the occurrence of biliary lithiasis in patients with chronic Chagas' disease have shown conflicting results. Aiming at contributing to a better understanding of the topic was assessed, by ultrasonographic scan, the frequency of Colelithiasis in chagasic patients with different anatomo-clinical forms of the disease. A total of 128 patients were studied, 85 males (mean age: 53 +/- 13 years) and 43 females (mean age: 53 +/_ 10 years) nineteen males and 18 females had the cardiac form ; 32 males and 19 females the digestive form; 20 males and 3 females the cardiac and digestive forms simultaneously; and 14 males and 3 females the indeterminate form. Controls were a series of 1139 individuals without Chagas' disease, 716 males and 423 females (mean age 46 +/_ 14 years for both sexes), who were submitted to postmortem examination. The frequency of cholelithiasis in chagasic males (14.1%) was significantly higher than in the controls (6%); by subgroup, it was significantly higher in the individuals with the cardiac and cardiac-digestive form (26.3% and 20% respectively), but not in those with the digestive form (9.4%). The frequency of colelithiasis was also significantly higher in chagasic females in the total (42%) and in the cardiac (50%) and digestive (31.6%) forms, when compared to the control group (14%). Male and female chronic chagasic patients have an increased frequency of colelithiasis, and therefore the preoccupation about this finding should not be restricted to the digestive form of the disease, as previous studies on this subject have suggested.

Neste trabalho é apresentado um procedimento para utilização do filtro de Wiener com dados correlacionados. As medidas são representadas por um modelo de interação espacial não causal que descreve a dependência estatística entre os valores da imagem e seus vizinhos priori à restauração de Wiener. Imagens de raios gama planares do ciclo cardíaco são usadas na implementação.


ln this paper a procedure to use Wiener filter with correlated data is presented. The measurements are represented by a spacial non-causal interaction model which describes the statistical dependence among the image values and their neighbourhood before Wiener restoration. Gamma-ray planar images of cardiac cycle are user in the implementation of the algorithms
