ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The high stress of nursing education can adversely affect students' well-being. Nature-based therapies aim to lessen stress. There is a gap in knowledge related to nature-based therapies and the nursing student population. The aims of this study were: (1) to describe the well-being of nursing students; and (2) to assess the effects of a nature-based intervention on students' anxiety, stress, relatedness, resilience, and well-being. METHOD: This descriptive study included 28 nursing students at a midwestern university. Participants completed online questionnaires before and after a nature-based intervention at an arboretum that consisted of five 1-hour designated nature walks guided by an audio recording. RESULTS: Participants' mean (SD) scores for well-being were classified as average before the intervention (54.3 [3.7]) and increased significantly after the intervention (55.3 [3.2]) (p = .04). CONCLUSION: With rising stress and anxiety levels among college students, nature interventions can support nursing students' overall well-being. [J Nurs Educ. 2024;63(2):116-119.].

ABSTRACT

Background: Peer physical examination is a clinical teaching-learning approach used for decades because of the convenient sample of peers for practicing. However, this approach has limitations when learning to assess abnormalities and threatens psychologically safe learning. A wearable simulator system was designed for learning physical examination skills to minimize ethical and learning challenges. Sample: The sample consisted of fifty prelicensure nursing students and ten faculty in an upper Midwest university. Method: The wearable simulator was constructed into a vest with RFID tags and ribcage landmarks. An observational, evaluative design was used for participants to rate seven categories during a one-hour evaluation session of the wearable simulator worn by a standardized patient trained to portray an individual with pneumonia. Results: Satisfaction was rated highly among participants. More than 80% of student participants indicated the wearable simulator promotes privacy and reduces embarrassment. Conclusion: The wearable simulator system offers a promising teaching-learning alternative with scenario-specific auscultation and palpation feedback to provide a safe, repeatable, and consistent simulation experience.

ABSTRACT

This report describes a One Health approach to address food insecurity among two distinct campus populations-college students and patients at a campus-based community health clinic serving Latine adults. The multidisciplinary collaboration includes college staff, faculty, and students, and the founders, both women-centered institutions. Organic community gardens located on and near campus property, pollinated by campus-based beehives, contribute local organic produce to a campus-based food shelf increasing food security and nutritional health for both populations. The One Health system modeled in this report is a step toward building a vibrant community and demonstrates how others can be a part of the larger One Health movement.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: nature-based interventions (NBI) have been shown to have positive effects on physical, psychological, social, and spiritual health. The purpose of this scoping literature review was to describe what is known regarding the cancer survivor experience in relationship to their interaction with the natural environment. Description/methods: this review was completed using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). The research strategy included a combination of these terms: cancer, neoplasms, nature, and forest therapy. The articles were blinded and screened by four independent researchers. A total of twelve articles were selected. Outcome/results: a total of 2786 cancer survivors participated in the twelve studies with multiple types and stages of cancer represented. The studies used multiple designs and measures. Results showed improvements in anxiety, depression, sleep, connectedness, stress, tension, confusion, fatigue, and pain. Participants reported that nature was the most important resource in coping with their cancer. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: nature is beneficial for cancer survivors while they experience cancer diagnosis and treatment. Nature opportunities can be feasibly delivered with this population and need to be explored further and safely implemented to support the overall health and well-being of cancer survivors.

ABSTRACT

Burnout, compassion fatigue, and perceived stress among undergraduate nursing students are significant factors leading to a poorer quality of life, decreased job satisfaction, and adversely impact patient outcomes. Burnout among undergraduate nursing students is a critical individual and workforce issue with contributing factors including a relentless schedule, academically challenging and rigorous programs, pressure to perform, and the completion of clinical hours caring for patients. This paper describes our feasibility study of a nature-based intervention (NBI) to reduce perceived stress and quality of life as it relates to burnout, and compassion fatigue. Quantitative data was collected through demographics, surveys, and electronic sensor data. The project's aim was to determine the feasibility of NBI monitored by NatureDoseTM to decrease perceived stress burnout and compassion fatigue among undergraduate nursing students.

ABSTRACT

Clinical named entity recognition (NER) is an essential building block for many downstream natural language processing (NLP) applications such as information extraction and de-identification. Recently, deep learning (DL) methods that utilize word embeddings have become popular in clinical NLP tasks. However, there has been little work on evaluating and combining the word embeddings trained from different domains. The goal of this study is to improve the performance of NER in clinical discharge summaries by developing a DL model that combines different embeddings and investigate the combination of standard and contextual embeddings from the general and clinical domains. We developed: 1) A human-annotated high-quality internal corpus with discharge summaries and 2) A NER model with an input embedding layer that combines different embeddings: standard word embeddings, context-based word embeddings, a character-level word embedding using a convolutional neural network (CNN), and an external knowledge sources along with word features as one-hot vectors. Embedding was followed by bidirectional long short-term memory (Bi-LSTM) and conditional random field (CRF) layers. The proposed model reaches or overcomes state-of-the-art performance on two publicly available data sets and an F1 score of 94.31% on an internal corpus. After incorporating mixed-domain clinically pre-trained contextual embeddings, the F1 score further improved to 95.36% on the internal corpus. This study demonstrated an efficient way of combining different embeddings that will improve the recognition performance aiding the downstream de-identification of clinical notes.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To describe results of a study evaluating a Projected Augmented Reality (P-AR) system for its potential to enhance nursing education about pressure injuries. DESIGN: Pilot evaluation survey. SUBJECTS AND SETTING: The sample comprised nursing students and faculty at a school of nursing in a large, Midwestern public university. A total of 32 participants, which included 27 students (30% BSN, 44% MN, and 26% DNP students; 81% female) and 5 faculty members (80% female) participated. METHODS: The P-AR system was prototyped using commercial-off-the-shelf components and software algorithms, applied to pressure injury nursing education content. After interaction with the P-AR system, participants completed a survey evaluating the following features of the P-AR system for potential: engagement, effectiveness, usefulness, user-friendliness, and realism, and users' overall impression and satisfaction with system features. Evaluation statements used a 5-level Likert-scale; open-ended questions about what was liked, disliked, or anything else offered opportunity for comments. RESULTS: Student and faculty median evaluation scores were 5 (strongly agree or very satisfied) and 4 (agree or satisfied) for nearly all evaluation and satisfaction statements. Students' satisfaction with "realism" received a median score of 3 (neutral). The P-AR system was refined to include realistic still and animated images. CONCLUSION: The P-AR system, an innovative technology using 3-dimensional dynamic images, was applied to nursing education content about pressure injury and was evaluated as having potential to enhance pressure injury teaching and learning. Education about complex processes of pressure injury development and management may benefit from using cutting-edge simulation technologies such as P-AR.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to identify gaps in support for parents of children with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. DESIGN AND METHODS: Using a mixed-methods approach, the researchers first studied the parental and care team experience through interviews of Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome mothers and members of the inter-professional care team and then conducted an international survey of 690 Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome primary caregivers to validate the qualitative findings. RESULTS: Parental and care team interviews revealed three main gaps in parental support, including lack of open communication, unrealistic parental expectations, and unclear inter-professional team roles. Survey results found that parents whose children were diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome after birth indicated significant dissatisfaction with the care team's open communication and welcoming of feedback (p = 0.008). As parents progress through the stages of surgical intervention, they also indicate significant dissatisfaction with the care team's anticipation of parental emotional needs and provision of coping resources (p = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS: Parental support interventions should focus on providing resources to help parents cope, helping the care team model open communication, and welcoming feedback on the parental experience. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Interventions should be piloted with parents who are in the later stages of the surgical intervention timeline or whose children were diagnosed after birth as they are the populations who perceived the least support within this study.

ABSTRACT

Mindfulness and Shinrin-yoku (SY) translated as forest bathing, is potentially effective to alleviate mental health issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. The purpose of this article is to provide a translational and pragmatic approach to understanding mindfulness in the context of SY and psychological wellbeing through a rapid review of the literature. The background of mindfulness and SY practice are discussed and the emotional, neuroendocrine, and neurobiological responses are examined. Next, a rapid review of the literature examined six studies, published between 2010 and 2020 to determine what is known regarding the relationship between SY, mindfulness, and psychological wellbeing. The studies included 21-360 participants with a mean age of 20-55 years. The results demonstrated a significant positive correlation between nature, mindfulness, and measures of psychological wellbeing. During uncertain events, including COVID-19, weaving mindfulness with SY may be specifically important to at-risk groups, those experiencing depression, loneliness, and social isolation, and at-risk populations such as college students, veterans, and professionals with high levels of stress. The goal of this review is to provide a thorough background and support of this cost-effective modality to promote overall psychological wellbeing as a preventative measure to those at risk or experiencing psychological illnesses.
