ABSTRACT

The decline of honey bee populations significantly impacts the human food supply due to poor pollination and yield decreases of essential crop species. Given the reduction of pollinators, research into critical landscape components, such as floral resource availability and land use change, might provide valuable information about the nutritional status and health of honey bee colonies. To address this issue, we examine the effects of landscape factors like agricultural area, urban area, and climatic factors, including maximum temperature, minimum temperature, relative humidity, and precipitation, on honey bee hive populations and nutritional health of 326 honey bee colonies across varying landscapes in Mexico. DNA metabarcoding facilitated the precise identification of pollen from 267 plant species, encompassing 243 genera and 80 families, revealing a primary herb-based diet. Areas characterized by high landscape diversity exhibited greater pollen diversity within the colony. Conversely, colonies situated in regions with higher proportions of agricultural and urban landscapes demonstrated lower bee density. The maximum ambient temperature outside hives positively correlated with pollen diversity, aligning with a simultaneous decrease in bee density. Conversely, higher relative humidity positively influenced both the bee density of the colony and the diversity of foraged pollen. Our national-level study investigated pollen dietary availability and colony size in different habitat types, latitudes, climatic conditions, and varied levels and types of disturbances. This effort was taken to gain a better insight into the mechanisms driving declines in honey bee populations. This study illustrates the need for more biodiverse agricultural landscapes, the preservation of diverse habitats, and the conservation of natural and semi-natural spaces. These measures can help to improve the habitat quality of other bee species, as well as restore essential ecosystem processes, such as pollination and pest control.

ABSTRACT

The Africanized honey bee, a hybrid of Apis mellifera scutellata from Africa with European subspecies, has been considered an invasive species and a problem for beekeeping. Africanized bees arrived in Mexico in 1986, 30 years after their accidental release in Brazil. Although government programs were implemented for its eradication, Africanized populations persist in Mexico, but precise information on the patterns of genetic introgression and racial ancestry is scarce. We determined maternal and parental racial ancestry of managed and feral honey bees across the five beekeeping regions of Mexico, using mitochondrial (mtDNA, COI-COII intergenic region) and nuclear markers (94 ancestrally informative SNPs), to assess the relationship between beekeeping management, beekeeping region, altitude, and latitude with the distribution of maternal and parental racial ancestry. Results revealed a predominantly African ancestry in the Mexican honey bees, but the proportion varied according to management, beekeeping regions, and latitude. The Mexican honey bees showed 31 haplotypes of four evolutionary lineages (A, M, C, and O). Managed honey bees had mitochondrial and nuclear higher proportions of European ancestry than feral honey bees, which had a higher proportion of African ancestry. Beekeeping regions of lower latitudes had higher proportions of African nuclear ancestry. Managed and feral honey bees showed differences in the proportion of maternal and nuclear racial ancestry. Managed honey bees from the Yucatan Peninsula and feral honey bees had a higher mtDNA than nuclear proportions of African ancestry. Managed honey bees, except those on the Yucatan Peninsula, had a higher nuclear than mtDNA proportion of African ancestry. Our study demonstrates that Africanized honey bee populations are genetically diverse and well established in Mexico, which highlights the limitations of management and government programs to contain the Africanization process and demands the incorporation of this lineage in any breeding program for sustainable beekeeping.

ABSTRACT

Sexuality is a central aspect for all human beings. Research into the prevalence of sexual dysfunction in pregnant Spanish women is scarce. The aim of this work is to examine the prevalence of risk of sexual dysfunctions in pregnant Spanish women and determine in which trimester the greatest difficulties in sexual response occur. The sample consisted of 180 pregnant Spanish women, with an average age of 32.03 years (SD = 4.93). The participants completed a questionnaire for socio-demographic data, as well as the female sexual function index, the state/trait depression inventory, and the dyadic adjustment scale. The results indicate that the percentage of women with a risk of sexual dysfunction was 65% in the first trimester and 81.11% in the third trimester. Likewise, the highest score on the depression questionnaire was in the third trimester, and the couple's relationship also improved in the third trimester. To improve women's sex lives during pregnancy, it is recommended to increase sexual education and information for both pregnant women and their partners.

ABSTRACT

Honey bee decline is currently one of the world's most serious environmental issues, and scientists, governments, and producers have generated interest in understanding its causes and consequences in honey production and food supply. Mexico is one of the world's top honey producers, however, the honey bee population's status has not been documented to date. Based on 32 years of data from beekeeping, we make a country-level assessment of honey bee colony trends in Mexico. We use generalized additive mixed models to measure the associations between the percent change in honey bee hives and the percent change in honey yield per hive in relation to land-use, climate, and socioeconomic conditions. Despite the fact that the average annual yield per hive increased from 1980 to 2012, we detected a significant decline in the percent change in the number of honey bee hives across the time period studied. We also found a relationship between climatic conditions and agricultural land use, with agriculture increases and high temperatures producing a decrease in the percent change in honey yield. We found a relationship between a reduction in the temperature range (the difference between maximum and minimum temperatures) and a decrease in the percent change in the number of hives, while socioeconomic factors related to poverty levels have an impact on the number of hives and honey yields. Although long-term declines in hive numbers are not correlated with poverty levels, socioeconomic factors in states with high and medium poverty levels limit the increase in honey yield per hive. These results provide evidence that land-use changes, unfavorable climatic conditions, political, and socioeconomic factors are partially responsible for the reductions in the percent change in honey bee hives in Mexico.

ABSTRACT

Background: The controversy about whether psychotherapy outcome is the consequence of the techniques themselves, common factors or both is still current. The importance of common factors has been demonstrated, although it is also known that they alone are insufficient. At the present time, the contextual model grants heavy weight to the therapeutic alliance in the first sessions and seems to predict positive final results. Furthermore, monitoring sessions has demonstrated that this alliance improves. Objectives: To analyze the relationship between the therapeutic alliance and patient's perceived improvement during the first five sessions of therapy, and find out whether the therapeutic alliance is maintained or unstable within that timeframe. Methods: Thirty-four patients at a university psychological care service who had had at least five therapy sessions participated. Of these, 70.46% were women (Mage = 24.24, SD = 6.73). The patients filled out the Outcome Rating Scale and Session Rating Scale the week before each session. Data were analyzed by the Dual STATIS method. Results: The compromise matrix explained 77.36% of the variability. The position of the vectors and the distribution of the position of the patients on the graph show that as their perception increased, therapeutic alliance remained stable. Moreover, the position of the vectors shows that the therapeutic alliance was forged in the first session and remained stable during the following sessions. Conclusion: This exploratory study demonstrated the importance of the first session in establishing the therapeutic alliance, and for it to remain stable, regardless of whether the rest of the therapeutic process has variations or changes. Novel use of the STATIS method for analyzing measurements in the first five sessions, showed that beginning the therapeutic intervention with a strong alliance, produced the favorable, lasting effects necessary for development of the intervention.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to evaluate markers of the CLOCK gene rs1801260 and rs4864548 in Mexican adolescents, addressing clinical and biological aspects previously associated with ADHD. 347 Mexican adolescents were assessed for mental disorders, metabolic disruption and related conditions, circadian preference, as well as genotyping for the CLOCK. We found a significant association between ADHD and the AA and AG genotypes of rs1801260. Also, we identified in the ADHD group that the total Triiodothyronine and total Thyroxine values were respectively 10 ng/dl units and 0.58 ug/dl units lower in females than in males. Previously reported common variations of the CLOCK gene have been associated with ADHD like the Rs1801260 polymorphism hereby we could consider it as risk factor, but genetic, biochemical and clinical studies in the Mexican population are entailed.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Introduction: The DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) needs to be validated in non-European populations. The aims of this study were to determine how common NSSI was in a sample of self-harming Mexican adolescents and examine the associated variables. Methods: We examined the medical records of 585 adolescents with a history of self-injurious behaviour who attended a public hospital in Mexico City from 2005 to 2012. A group of experts established the diagnosis according to the DSM-5. The clinical and demographic characteristics of patients with and without NSSI were compared. Results: NSSI was diagnosed in 351 patients (60%) with evidence of self-harm. The main reasons for not being diagnosed were a previous suicide attempt (criterion A, 158 subjects [26.87%]) and another diagnosis that better explained the self-injurious behaviour (criterion F, 60 subjects [10.25%]). The NSSI group had a higher proportion of males (26.5% vs 16.2%) and patients with behavioural disorders (28.5% vs 13.7%). These patients were also found to seek psychiatric support in relation to their self-harm more frequently (31.9% vs 14.1%). The associated clinical characteristics included behavioural disorder (OR=2.51; 95% CI, 1.62-3.90), personality disorders (OR=0.56; 95% CI, 0.33-0.97), hospital admission (OR=0.23; 95% CI, 0.16-0.33), depressive symptoms (OR=0.60; 95% CI, 0.42-0.85), anxiety symptoms (OR=2.08; 95% CI, 1.31-3.31) and self-harming to influence others (OR=2.19; 95% CI, 1.54-3.11). Conclusions: More than half of the adolescents in the clinical sample with self-injury met DSM-5 criteria for NSSI. There are clinical and demographic characteristics which may be associated with this diagnosis.

ABSTRACT

Most of the world's land surface is currently under human use and natural habitats remain as fragmented samples of the original landscapes. Measuring the quality of plant progeny sired in these pervasive environments represents a fundamental endeavour for predicting the evolutionary potential of plant populations remaining in fragmented habitats and thus their ability to adapt to changing environments. By means of hierarchical and phylogenetically independent meta-analyses we reviewed habitat fragmentation effects on the genetic and biological characteristics of progenies across 179 plant species. Progeny sired in fragmented habitats showed overall genetic erosion in contrast with progeny sired in continuous habitats, with the exception of plants pollinated by vertebrates. Similarly, plant progeny in fragmented habitats showed reduced germination, survival and growth. Habitat fragmentation had stronger negative effects on the progeny vigour of outcrossing- than mixed-mating plant species, except for vertebrate-pollinated species. Finally, we observed that increased inbreeding coefficients due to fragmentation correlated negatively with progeny vigour. Our findings reveal a gloomy future for angiosperms remaining in fragmented habitats as fewer sired progeny of lower quality may decrease recruitment of plant populations, thereby increasing their probability of extinction.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This investigation intends to assess the psychometric properties of the questionnaire STAI in a sample of drug abusers versus a non-clinic sample. It was carried out a sampling for conglomerates in 28 treatment centers for addiction, distributed in 27 Spanish provinces. The sample was composed by 1054 subjects who had a history of substance use and 211 with no history of substance abuse. The analysis of reliability showed an internal appropriate validity. The items analysis shows the necessity to revise two items when the questionnaire is used with drug abusers population. The results show that people with a history of consumption obtained a higher mean score than those who had not used substances, women obtained a higher mean score than males, and that people who had used depressants obtained a score higher than those who had consumed stimulants. The differences were statistically significant.

ABSTRACT

Bipolar disorder is one of the most disabling psychiatric illnesses. Some characteristics of the disorder vary with sex, such as predominant polarity, frequency and type of comorbidity, and type of episodes presented. In the case of bipolar women, it is important to consider reproductive events, due to their influence in the course of the disorder. High comorbidity of bipolar disorder and premenstrual dysphoric disorder with an exacerbation of symptoms in the premenstrual period has been reported in 44% to 65% which may lead to a worse disease course. In general, women with premenstrual symptom exacerbation show more affective - particularly depressive - episodes, more frequent relapses, and more severe symptomatology. Pregnancy does not appear to increase presence of bipolar episodes, but significantly complicates treatment. On the one hand, stopping the treatment, particularly abruptly, increases the risk of relapse; while on the other, the use of mood stabilizers represents a risk for the newborn. Poor neonatal outcomes, congenital malformations and neurodevelopment alterations in children of mothers exposed to mood stabilizers during pregnancy have been reported. So, a meticulous benefit-risk assessment should be carried out in pregnant bipolar women. In the postpartum period, a clearer relation with increased risk of affective episode has been observed; while the perimenopause increases depressive episodes. The inter-relation between reproductive cycle and bipolar episodes suggests that gonadal hormones are involved in their physio-pathology. Here we discuss some of the observations related to testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone, estrogens, and progesterone

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review was to assess recent research (the last 18 months) and its impact on understanding sexual pain disorders relevant to daily clinical practice. RECENT FINDINGS: It has been highlighted that sexual pain is related to the number of tender points, pressure pain threshold, more deliberate fear and less global positive affective associations with sexual stimuli, episiotomy, attachment styles, drug abuse and the influence of ambivalence over emotional expression in couples. The efficacy of a multidisciplinary vulvodynia programme of treatment, another type of therapy based on the fear-avoidance and pain self-efficacy model and a novel cognitive-behavioral couple therapy has been stated. SUMMARY: There is a gradual advance in the knowledge of sexual pain disorder etiology. At the same time different therapeutics strategies have been increasing, but it is necessary to introduce guidelines on the basis of the evidence to approach with efficacy this severe disorder. ABSTRACT

The presence of a psychiatric disorder in parents is associated with increased frequency of psychopathology in their offsprings. Children of parents diagnosed with bipolar disorder (BD) are at greater risk and lower function. However, it has not yet been determined precisely which clinical and sociodemographic factors are associated with the presentation of psychiatric disorders in this group of children and adolescents at risk. Under this framework, the aim of this study was to determine the clinical and sociodemographic variables associated with a lower function. We recruited 61 children and adolescents with ages ranging from six to 17. All of them were the children of parents with BD who were patients attended at the National Institute of Psychiatry Ramón de la Fuente Muñiz. Clinical evaluation was developed by the Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children Present and Lifetime Version (K-SADS-PL), and Children's Global Assesment Scale (C-GAS) scale was used to established the overall functioning. Of the 61 evaluated 62.3% were women, the lowest function (defined by <81 points C-GAS) was found in 44.3% of women vs. 18% men (x²=3.29, p<0.043). Comorbidity with major depressive disorder or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or op-positional defiant disorder conferred ten times greater risk of lower global function. Being a woman gives three times higher risk for a lower global function. Conclusion We found that the comorbid externalizing disorders and depression, as well as the female gender characteristics are linked to lower function in children and adolescents of parents with BD.

ABSTRACT

Loneliness is a complex psychological construct that influences our health through stress and cortisol. In this study we examined psychometrically the Spanish translation of the UCLA Loneliness Scale (Version 3) in a sample of members of the Guardia Civil. The results showed adequate reliability (Cronbach’s alpha .954) for research and evaluation of specific individuals. KMO index was calculated (.969), the Bartlett’s test of sphericity (χ2 (190)=14406.221, ρ<.000) and the determinant of the correlation matrix (.0000018), to examine the appropriateness of analysis factorial. For this analysis we used the polychoric correlation matrix (explains 81.49 % of the total variance), extracting two components through the principal components analysis (PCA) and varimax rotation (10,184 and 1,080). On the other hand, does not seem necessary to delete or revise any items (item-total correlation .486-.804). Consequently, it is concluded that this scale might be valid to study how this variable influences the health of the members of this militarized police force

ABSTRACT

Background Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a health problem that affects school functioning. To recognize the teachers' knowledge and beliefs (KB) about ADHD is important for the development of psychoeducative and training strategies for teachers. There are few Latin American reports about the teachers' KB and none comparing them among different countries. Objective To evaluate and compare the teachers' KB about ADHD in Mexico, Dominican Republic (DR) and Bolivia. Methods Previous verbal informed consent, the teacher's version of CASO-TDAH, a self-report document that was constructed based on other instruments, was applied. The answers were examined with descriptive statistics. Results 311 public and private school teachers were evaluated, 192 (61.7%) from DR, 84 (27%) from Mexico and 35 (11.3%) from Bolivia; 79.3% of them considered ADHD as a disease. Most of the sample considered the psychologist as the competent health professional for its diagnosis and treatment. Combined treatment was the most frequently identified as the ideal (44.1%). Regarding their KB about the pharmacological treatment, only 14.7% identified the drug as the main component of the multimodal treatment. The teachers recognized the treatment effects on the social and academic functioning. Differences were found among teachers from the three countries regarding the importance of drug treatment or the need for multimodal treatment. Conclusions Teachers identify ADHD as a disease, albeit without a clear recognition of its biological components. There were differences among countries, which should be taken into account in the design of the local health psychoeducation and attention programs.

ABSTRACT

Background Early onset mania (MIMT), compared with adolescent onset mania (MIA), has a different clinical presentation of classic mania adult onset (MIEA). Patients with MIA have a course more like the MIEA. Externalizing disorders (ADHD, ODD, and TC) have been associated with an earlier age of onset of bipolar disorder and as a marker of poor prognosis. Our goal is to determine the frequency of symptoms related to disruptive behavior disorders in patients with bipolar disorder start very early, early and adult evaluated retrospectively. Methods The total sample (N=64) of adolescent and adult patients was obtained from the National Institute of Psychiatry (INPRF) clinics. The diagnosis was confirmed by the research team. Patients signed the informed asentment and consentment. We applied the K SADS PL Mexico, MINI and MINI KID. We used the EEPE-AA for externalizing disorders. Results There were significant differences in scores compared by EEPE AA EIED groups in the Inattention subscale for GIMT. The presence of ADHD, ODD, TC and Suicide Risk in the time of evaluation was significantly associated with an earlier onset. Discussion and conclusion Our data supports the clinical utility and importance of separating the TBP by age of onset. The detection of externalizing disorders may speak of an early onset of the disorder and may also have implications for prognosis and psychopharmacological treatment, since the TBP-onset childhood to adulthood remains similar and difficult to manage. This suggests that we must have a longitudinal view of this disorder.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Sexual attitudes are an important aspect of therapeutic work, especially in persons with addictions. Consequently, it is important to have appropriate assessment instruments that can be used in this population. Objective: One of the goals of the present work was to adapt the Sexual Opinion Survey (SOS) to a Spanish population with a history in addictive behavior and to analyze its factorial structure and reliability. Another goal was to compare the results of the questionnaire obtained in this population with those of another population with no history of addiction. Method: The sample was selected from 28 treatment centers, distributed in 27 Spanish provinces, through conglomerate sampling. There were two groups: an experimental group (with 1054 persons with addictions) and a control group (211 persons with no addictions). Results: Five factors were found for the structure of the control group and six factors for that of the experimental group. Conclusions: The results of this study confirmed two of the three initial hypotheses. The control group and experimental group have a different factorial structure and people in the control group have a higher level of erotophilia. We also observed a tendency for men to have higher mean questionnaire scores than women, but these differences were not statistically significant. These results do not agree with those obtained in previous investigations, which indicated that men were more erotophilic than women, suggesting that, in the 24 years since the development of the SOS, sexual attitudes among women have changed and now more closely resemble those of men (AU)
