ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact schools and how education is conveyed to students. One of the aspects that has gained strength is supporting the wellbeing of educational communities. The purpose of this study was to describe and understand the construction of school wellbeing during the pandemic, based on the notion of collective and sustainable wellbeing. Through a qualitative design, we conducted a study in four Chilean low-SES schools in which a national school mental health program is implemented. A total of 41 in-depth interviews and one group interview were conducted with students, parents, teacher, teacher assistants, school principals, psychosocial professionals, and the school mental health officers during the second half of the 2020 school year. Thematic content analyses showed that, while facing the school closure challenges, schools strived to protect students' and teachers' wellbeing. However, participants highlighted necessary conditions for sustaining the school community's wellbeing and mental health in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic: assuring digital connectivity for all students; coordinated work with families and within the school; strengthening networks; curriculum adaptation and diversified pedagogical strategies; and emotional support toward teachers, families, and students. We discuss these findings and their implications for a sustainable and collective perspective of the wellbeing of school communities in low-SES schools, as well as for policy, practice, and research from the perspective of schools for social justice and health promotion.

ABSTRACT

Alopecic and aseptic nodules of the scalp, also named pseudocysts of the scalp, are a relatively new, little-known, and for sure underdiagnosed disease. It affects mostly young men and is characterized by a solitary or a few dome-shaped nodules accompanied by nonscarring alopecia, deep inflammatory infiltration in the skin biopsy specimen, and, in most cases, granulomas. It has a good response to doxycycline, intralesional corticosteroids, or drainage/aspiration of the lesion. We present a case report and a summary of the published cases.

ABSTRACT

Carney described a disorder characterized by the presence of several uncommon tumors which were pulmonary chondromas, gastric sarcomas and extra-adrenal paragangliomas. We report a 14 year-old girl in whom multiple gastric tumors were discovered during a study of an iron deficiency anemia and was subjected to a partial gastrectomy. At 25 years of age, she developed several pulmonary chondromas and at 33 years, a mediastinal tumor with features of an extra-adrenal paraganglioma was found. At 35 years of age, a total gastrectomy was performed to remove a gastrointestinal stromal tumor with excision of peritoneal and lymph node metastasis. One year later, the patient died due to liver failure secondary to liver metastases.

ABSTRACT

This paper presents an empirical study comparing the performance of two ability-based Emotional Intelligence (EI) tests (MSCEIT and TESIS). A sample of 164 participants completed both instruments and significant correlations were obtained among several of the tests’ scores, although remarkable differences were also found. The Spanish MSCEIT overall score and two of its areas (Experiential and Strategic) showed a correlation of .18 with the TESIS total score (Sensitivity). Several MSCEIT sub-tests correlated discreetly but significantly with the three TESIS scores (Sensitivity, Naïve-Insensitivity and Over-interpreting-Insensitivity). From a differential point of view, both TESIS and MSCEIT seem to detect changes in EI due to age but, in the case of MSCEIT, results were counter-intuitive (EI descreases with age). Similarly, TESIS results seemed more logical than those of the MSCEIT when comparing groups by gender, al-though not reaching statistical significance. When analysing undergraduate students, MSCEIT was more discriminative than TESIS, but again the results were controversial. All these data raise the need to better understand the variables measured by both tests, and also question whether the current instruments for measuring EI have actually gathered evidence of construct validity (AU)

ABSTRACT

A case of disseminated allocthonous histoplasmosis in a Colombian AIDS patient who came to the countryin March 2006 is described. He consulted for a clinic syndrome which had started two months before and which was characterized by intense abdominal pain, vomits, weight loss, diaphoresis, evening fever, multiple adenopathies and oral candidosis. Among the exams he was submittedto it is noteworthy a thorax X-rays with interstitial infiltrate, pancitopenia, ELISA to detect positive VIH and negative microbiological cultures. The patient reacted unsatisfactorily in spite of the empirical, broad spectrum antimicrobian treatment; the cervical ganglion was byopsed revealing the presence of gemant yeasts in necrosis focuses after which a treatment with anfotericine B was started, byopsia was repeated to get a mycological culture resulting Histoplasma capsulatum. Later on he reacted satisfactorily, he had no fever and showed a partial improvementin his general state, however on 11/17/06 he undergoes agitation, desaturation and he dies the followingday due to an undetermined cause. This rarely frequent national case is commented together with the delivery of some epidemiological as well as diagnostic and systematic information.
