ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: While the positive correlation was shown in a few studies which investigated the relationship between obesity and pentraxin-3 (PTX-3) levels, different findings were obtained in other studies. We aimed to determine PTX-3 levels in obese and healthy children, and their relationship with Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) criteria. METHODS: 105 children and adolescents were considered as the study population. Participants were divided into three groups; obese and MetS (OM+), obese and non-MetS (OM-) and the control group. Fasting glucose, blood lipids and PTX-3 levels were measured. Ultrasonography was performed to detect hepatic steatosis. MetS and hepatic steatosis were investigated by dividing the patients into two groups according to PTX-3 levels. RESULTS: The study population consisted of 37 patients with OM+; 35 patients with OM- and 33 healthy children. OM+ patients had higher fasting insulin (p<0.001), homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (p<0.001), triglyceride (p<0.001) and lower high-density lipoprotein (p=0.001). The PTX-3 level was higher in the OM+ group compared to both OM- group and the control group (p=0.002). When two groups were generated according to PTX-3 level, a higher frequency of MetS was detected in the high PTX 3 group than in all three major MetS diagnostic criteria groups. Moreover, there was more hepatic steatosis in the high PTX-3 group independent from obesity and MetS. CONCLUSIONS: Higher PTX-3 levels were present in children and adolescent obese patients with MetS.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to determine the relationship between serum vitamin B12 level and tension-type headache. The study groups consisted of 75 patients (40 females, 35 males) with headache and a control group of 49 healthy children (25 females, 24 males). Serum vitamin B12 level < 200 pg/ml was defined as deficient, and < 160 pg/ml as severely deficient. The serum vitamin B12 level was measured by the electrochemiluminescence (ECLIA) method. The serum vitamin B12 levels in the headache and control groups were 273.01 ± 76.77 and 316.22 ± 74.53 pg/ml, with the difference determined as statistically significant (p = 0.003). In the case group, 18/75 patients (24%) had a serum vitamin B12 level below the normal of 200 pg/ml, and in the control group 4/49 (8%) patients were also below the normal range (p = 0.021). The serum vitamin B12 level in the children with tension-type headache was significantly lower than that in the control group. From the results of the study, it was concluded that there may be an association between vitamin B12 level and tension-type headache. However, further clinical studies are needed.

ABSTRACT

The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between leptin receptor gene (LEPR) Gln223Arg polymorphism and obesity in Turkish children. Ninety-two obese and 99 lean children (between 5-15 years) were included in the study. Twenty-three of the obese children were diagnosed with metabolic syndrome. Blood samples were collected for morning fasting blood glucose, insulin, leptin, and lipid level measurements. LEPR Gln223Arg polymorphism was analyzed by restriction fragment length polymorphism. Significant differences were observed in anthropometric measurements, fasting blood glucose, insulin, leptin, and lipid levels between obese and lean children. Serum leptin levels were markedly higher in obese children. No significant association was noted between Gln223Arg polymorphism and serum leptin, insulin and lipid levels. There were no differences in the genotype frequencies or allele distribution for Gln223Arg polymorphism among obese, obese with metabolic syndrome and lean children. Our findings suggest that there is no association between Gln223Arg polymorphism and obesity in Turkish children.

ABSTRACT

Supernumerary nostril is an extremely rare congenital anomaly. It can be unilateral or bilateral and it sometimes occurs in association with other congenital abnormalities. We describe a newborn infant with bilateral supernumerary nostrils together with oesophageal atresia and patent ductus arteriosus, an association that has not been reported previously in the literature.
