ABSTRACT

Propósito Colombia es un país con una alta prevalencia de hipotiroidismo, aproximadamente del 18,5% respecto al resto de países latinoamericanos que se estima en un 10%. Es por ello que en la consulta de oftalmología se encuentra una gran proporción de pacientes con esta enfermedad y que además presentan síntomas de ojo seco. Al realizar una búsqueda en la literatura médica, la mayoría de publicaciones se refieren a la presentación clínica de ojo seco del hipertiroidismo. El objetivo de este estudio es describir los hallazgos de las diferentes pruebas para el diagnóstico de ojo seco en pacientes con hipotiroidismo. Métodos Se trata de un estudio observacional, de tipo transversal, realizado en el periodo comprendido entre mayo y diciembre de 2019 en la unidad de superficie ocular del Centro de Tecnología Oftálmica (CTO) en Bogotá. Se evaluaron las pruebas de Test de OSDI (Ocular Surface Disease Index), Schirmer tipo I, altura del menisco lagrimal, NiBUT, Osmolaridad, test de Ferning, test de verde de lisamina de 59 pacientes con enfermedad de ojo seco y antecedente de hipotiroidismo. Resultados Las prueba de Schirmer tipo I y NiBUT fueron los parámetros que presentaron mayor porcentaje de severidad, mientras que la tinción con verde de lisamina y la meniscometría mostraron tendencia a la normalidad. Conclusione La población de este estudio presenta un ojo seco tipo mixto sin daño en las células epiteliales (AU)

When conducting a search in the medical literature, most publications refer to the clinical presentation of dry eye in hyperthyroidism, which is why the main objective of this study is to evaluate tear function tests in the diagnosis of dry eye in patients with hypothyroidism. Methods This is an observational, cross-sectional study carried out in the period between May and December 2019 in the ocular surface unit of the Ophthalmic Technology Center (CTO) in Bogotá. The tests of: OSDI test (Ocular Surface Disease Index), Schirmer type I, tear meniscus height, NiBUT, Osmolarity, Ferning test, Lisamine Green test of 59 patients with Dry Eye Disease and history of hypothyroidism. Results Schirmer type I and NiBUT tests were the parameters that presented the highest percentage of severity, while lissamine green staining and meniscometry showed a tendency to normality. Conclusions The population of this study presents a mixed type dry eye without epithelial cell damage (AU)

ABSTRACT

We present a detailed quantitative magneto-optical imaging study of several superconductor/ferromagnet hybrid structures, including Nb deposited on top of thermomagnetically patterned NdFeB and permalloy/niobium with erasable and tailored magnetic landscapes imprinted in the permalloy layer. The magneto-optical imaging data are complemented with and compared to scanning Hall probe microscopy measurements. Comprehensive protocols have been developed for calibrating, testing, and converting Faraday rotation data to magnetic field maps. Applied to the acquired data, they reveal the comparatively weaker magnetic response of the superconductor from the background of larger fields and field gradients generated by the magnetic layer.

ABSTRACT

The manipulation and control of vortex states in superconducting systems are of great interest in view of possible applications, for which mesoscopic materials are good candidates. In this work, we studied the annihilation dynamics and the dissipative aspects of an Abrikosov's vortex-antivortex pair in a mesoscopic superconducting system with a concentric hole. The generalized time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations were numerically solved. The main result is the appearance of a phase slip-like line due to the elongation of the vortex and antivortex cores. Under specific circumstances, thermal dissipation might be associated with a sizeable relaxation of the order parameter, so that the energy released in the annihilation of a vortex-antivortex pair might become detectable in measurements of the magnetization as a function of time.

ABSTRACT

We studied the structural, chemical and magnetic properties of non-doped ceria (CeO(2)) thin films electrodeposited on silicon substrates. Experimental results confirm that the observed room temperature ferromagnetism is driven by both cerium and oxygen vacancies. We investigated ceria films presenting vacancy concentrations well above the percolation limit. Irradiation experiments with neon ions were employed to generate highly oxygen defective CeO(2-δ) structures. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and x-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy were used to estimate the concentration of Ce(3+) sites in the films, which can reach up to 50% of Ce(3+) replacing Ce(4+), compared to a stoichiometric CeO(2) structure. Despite the increment of structural disorder, we observe that the saturation magnetization continuously increases with Ce(3+) concentration. Our experiments demonstrate that the ferromagnetism observed in ceria thin films, highly disordered and oxygen-deficient, preserving the fluorite-type structure only in a nanometer scale, remains intrinsically stable at room temperature.
