ABSTRACT

Biocomposites create attractive alternatives to match packing needs with available agricultural residues. Growing native fungal strains developed a mycelium biocomposite over a mixture of Peach Palm Fruit Peel Flour and Sugar Cane Bagasse Wet Dust. A methodology was proposed to analyze their main characteristics: 1) morphological, 2) chemical, and 3) biodegradability. 1) SEM analysis evidenced the structural change of the dried vs pressed material and mycelium morphology for both species. 2) The ratio lignin:carbohydrate showed that P. ostreatus degrades the cellulose-hemicellulose fraction of the substrate at a higher rate than T. elegans, and 3) the curve BMP indicated that these materials are readily biodegradable with a maximum yield of 362,50 mL biogas/g VS. An innovative tangible valorization strategy based on mass balances is also presented: from just 50 kg of peel flour, up to 1840 units can be manufactured, which could pave the way for a more sustainable future.

ABSTRACT

Global pork production has an annual growth of approximately 2.1%, and its economic and environmental impact are related with the treatment of waste in the production chain. There is little evidence of research advances to generate alternatives for using these wastes. The lack of research related to microalgae cultivation using digestate produced by porcine residues generates negative environmental impact, inadequate and inefficient technologies, low recovery and use of waste and loss of value and competitiveness in the market. The available literature focuses mainly on the treatment of anaerobic digestion liquid effluents for the removal of components, but not on the generation of value-added products. Therefore, there is a need to collect the available information, analyze it and propose other new methodologies. This article presents the information obtained from conducting a systematic review of the literature with a bibliometric and a comparative analysis; achieving an analysis of the temporal and geographical distribution, the main topics, the most influential players, the degree of maturity of the research and different strategies collected for microalgae-based swine manure digestate treatment. In this way, it was possible to capture an overview of the current state of the development of research focused on the use of digestate for the cultivation of microalgae, visualizing important aspects as the evolution of publications, identifying China and USA as the main players in research, biomass and wastewater as potential topics also Spirulina, Astaxanthin and beta-carotene as the main products based on microalgae. Thus, achieving an structure, organized and synthesized landscape of scientific and technological knowledge available for the proposal of investigations that allow the use of anaerobic digestion liquid effluents as cultivation medium for microalgae.

ABSTRACT

To reduce CO2 emissions and simultaneously produce biomass rich in essential fatty acids, Chlorella vulgaris CCAP 211 was continuously grown in a tubular photobioreactor using air alone or air enriched with CO2 as the sole carbon source. While on one hand, nitrogen-limited conditions strongly affected biomass growth, conversely, they almost doubled its lipid fraction. Under these conditions using air enriched with 0, 2, 4, 8, and 16% (v/v) CO2 , the maximum biomass concentration was 1.4, 5.8, 6.6, 6.8, and 6.4 gDB L(-1) on a dry basis, the CO2 consumption rate 62, 380, 391, 433, and 430 mgCO2 L(-1) day(-1) , and the lipid productivity 3.7, 23.7, 24.8, 29.5, and 24.4 mg L(-1) day(-1) , respectively. C. vulgaris was able to grow effectively using CO2 -enriched air, but its chlorophyll a (3.0-3.5 g 100gDB (-1) ), chlorophyll b (2.6-3.0 g 100gDB (-1) ), and lipid contents (10.7-12.0 g 100gDB (-1) ) were not significantly influenced by the presence of CO2 in the air. Most of the fatty acids in C. vulgaris biomass were of the saturated series, mainly myristic, palmitic, and stearic acids, but a portion of no less than 45% consisted of unsaturated fatty acids, and about 80% of these were high added-value essential fatty acids belonging to the ω3 and ω6 series. These results highlight that C. vulgaris biomass could be of great importance for human health when used as food additive or for functional food production.
