ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The use of dental cone-beam CT (CBCT) has increased in recent years. We aimed to calculate the organ and effective doses in dental CBCT using Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) and to correlate the effective dose with the dose-length product (DLP), which is a radiation dose index. METHODS: Organ and effective doses were calculated by MCS using the adult male and female reference phantoms of the International Commission on Radiological Protection publication 110 in a half-rotation scan of the CBCT scanner Veraviewepocs 3Df. The simulations were performed by setting nine protocols in combination with the field-of-view (FOV) and imaging region. In addition, DLPs were calculated by MCS using the virtual CT Dose Index (CTDI) and CBCT phantoms, with the same protocol. RESULTS: The effective doses were 55 and 195 µSv at the minimum FOV of Φ40 × H40 mm and maximum FOV of Φ 80 × H80 mm, respectively. The organs with the major contribution to the effective dose were the red bone marrow (11.0‒12.8%), thyroid gland (4.0‒12.7%), salivary gland (21.8‒33.2%), and remaining tissues (35.1‒45.7%). Positive correlations were obtained between the effective dose and calculated DLP using the CTDI and CBCT phantoms. CONCLUSIONS: Organ and effective doses for each protocol of dental CBCT could be estimated using MCS. There was a positive correlation between the effective dose and DLP, suggesting that DLP can be used to estimate the effective dose of CBCT.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The study clarified differences in understanding and satisfaction between face-to-face and online training on radiation emergency medical preparedness (REMP) training. METHODS: The training was held at Hirosaki University between 2018 and 2022, with 46 face-to-face participants and 25 online participants. RESULTS: Face-to-face training was significantly more understandable than online for the use of the Geiger counter (P < 0.05), but the educational effect of virtual reality (VR) was not significantly different from the actual practice. For the team exercise of taking care of the victims, online resulted in a significantly higher understanding (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Interactive exercises can be done online with equipment sent to learners, and VR is also as effective. The use of videos was more effective for first-timers to learn the practical process from a bird's-eye view, especially for team-based medical procedures.

ABSTRACT

Over 10 years have passed since the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. This study verifies the efficacy of longitudinal regulation on internal exposure doses and analyzes food group contributions to radiation doses using accumulated monitoring test results. The committed effective doses in 10,000 virtual persons from fiscal year (FY) 2012 to 2021, with and without regulation, were estimated as products of radioactivity concentrations randomly sampled from the test results, food intake, and dose coefficient. The distributed values of food intake rather than a mean value in dose estimation were assumed to reflect food intake variations and avoid underestimation of internal exposure doses for high-intake consumers. Furthermore, the ingestion of radioactive cesium from the calculation was analyzed per food group. The 95th percentile of the internal exposure dose (the dose of a "representative person") was less than 1 mSv/year in both FYs. The regulation effect was substantial in FY 2012, and no noticeable difference in radiation doses was found between the regulation and no regulation conditions after FY 2016. Internal exposure doses decreased until approximately FY 2016 and then remained constant. It was also shown that not only radioactivity concentration but also food intake is a major factor affecting cesium intake. In summary, it was confirmed that Japan had ensured food safety regarding radioactive materials.

ABSTRACT

Hirosaki University has regularly offered health support activities to residents of X town in Fukushima, and thus, some interactive benefits are expected as a service-learning experience for nursing students. This study aimed to clarify the experiences of students who participated in service-learning and consider which methods and content were effective. In total, 52 nursing students were recruited into the program, which was held from 2018 to 2021. The roles of students included assisting in health consultations related to a radiation disaster. Questionnaires designed by researchers with experience in risk communication programs were conducted on the students after the program, and included the reasons why they joined, their most memorable experiences, and their opinions regarding required support for residents. The data were analyzed by content analysis. The nursing students thought about the health of residents through health support activities in the affected areas. Furthermore, by communicating with residents via on-site service-learning, they could experience the humanity of the residents and the current status of the affected areas, learn the importance of person-to-person relationships, and think about reconstruction. Thus, service-learning was found to be effective and to offer substantial benefits for both residents and students in affected areas.

ABSTRACT

Focusing on the importance of wild vegetables for local residents, this study aims to validate the effects of food regulations under the current criteria (e.g., 100 Bq/kg for general foods) established approximately a year after the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. Over 2,500,000 monitoring tests were performed under the criteria until fiscal year (FY) 2020. We estimated changes in internal exposure dose using test results. The effective dose was estimated using the radioactive concentration randomly sampled from the results, food intake, and dose conversion factor. As a new attempt, dose estimation reflecting the intake of wild vegetables that may have irreplaceable value for local residents was conducted. The median, 95th, and 99th percentile of the estimated dose without reflecting the wild vegetables' intake were 0.0485, 0.183, and 10.6 mSv/year, respectively, in the estimation with all test results (no regulation) and 0.0431, 0.0786, and 0.236 mSv/year, respectively, in the estimation with results within the standard limits (regulated) in FY2012. These doses decreased with time. Although estimated doses with or without the reflection of wild vegetables' intake were similar, estimation that is more plausible is possible, particularly for a high percentile, by reflecting the wild vegetables' intake. Radiation doses (regulated) were significantly less than 1 mSv/year in different FYs. In Japan, food regulation measures benefit food safety.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The spread of COVID-19 has made it difficult to provide training in medical treatment in a radiation disaster. In this study, we will examine the effects and challenges of using a hybrid approach that combines online and face-to-face components. METHODS: A total of 5 face-to face and 25 online medical staff participated in the training program. This program was conducted by using multiple cameras for live coverage, while protective clothing and decontamination kits had been sent in advance to the participants so that they could experience face-to-face and online learning at the same time. RESULTS: Participants reported a high level of satisfaction and achievement with the style of delivery. They also experienced problems such as fatigue due to long hours, and dissatisfaction with the debriefing. CONCLUSIONS: In designing new online training, it is necessary to consider the quantity and content of the program, and to take participant fatigue into consideration.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Radiation protection glasses is a useful tool for dose reduction of eye lens. However, the method to evaluate the dose of eye lens, which is covered with radiation protection glasses in actual radiation management situation, has not been established. We invented the easy-to-use procedure to estimate the dose of eye lens inside of radiation protection glasses for occupationally exposed person using an X-ray shielding material and an additional personal dosimeter for trunk of the body. The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of the new method. METHODS: The radiation field in interventional radiology (IR) was reconstructed. A personal dosimeter was set to the eye position and neck position of medical staff phantom. Each dosimeter was covered by radiation protection glasses or X-ray shielding material, and the 1 cm or 70 mm dose equivalent quantity in the neck position was compared to the 3 mm dose equivalent quantity in the eye position. RESULTS: The dose equivalent quantity measured inside of X-ray shielding material in the neck position was similar to that of inside radiation protection glasses. Thus, the X-ray attenuation by radiation protection glasses was able to be simulated using the X-ray shielding material. CONCLUSION: It was suggested that the dose of eye lens inside of radiation protection glasses could be easily estimated by covering the conventional personal dosimeter for trunk of the body with the X-ray shielding material.

ABSTRACT

This study examined the effect of food regulations under the current criteria (e.g., 100 Bq/kg for general foods) established approximately a year after the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident. Foods are monitored to ensure that foods exceeding the standard limit are not distributed; ~300,000 examinations per year have been performed especially since FY2014. This study comprehensively estimated the internal exposure dose resulting from the ingestion of foods containing radioactive cesium using the accumulated monitoring results. Committed effective dose was conservatively calculated as the product of the radioactive concentration randomly sampled from test results, food intake, and dose coefficient. The median, 95th, and 99th percentile of the dose were 0.0479, 0.207, and 10.6 mSv/y, respectively, in the estimation with all test results (without regulation), and 0.0430, 0.0790, and 0.233 mSv/y, respectively, in the estimation with results within the standard limits (with regulation) in FY2012. In FY2016, the dose with and without regulation were similar, except for high percentile, and those doses were significantly smaller than 1 mSv/y, which was adopted as the basis for the current criteria. The food regulation measures implemented in Japan after the FDNPP accident have been beneficial, and food safety against radionuclides has been ensured.

ABSTRACT

Most radiation protection items made from modern lead contain 210Pb. This study estimated the impact on eye lens of radiation derived from the 210Pb in three types of radiation protection glasses. The counts from the glasses were measured using a Geiger-Müeller survey meter. The net count rate was 92 ± 1 cpm at a distance of 0.5 cm for one type of glasses. Additionally, we conducted a qualitative γ-ray spectrum analysis using a high-purity germanium semiconductor detector. The absorbed dose in the eye lens was related to 210Pb and its daughter radionuclide, 210Bi; this dose was calculated by applying dose conversion coefficients provided by the International Commission on Radiological Protection. The absorbed dose rate in eye lens was conservatively calculated to be on the order of 10 nGy/h for the type of glasses containing the most 210Pb. The dose from ß-rays accounted for >99%. In addition, we investigated the dose-reduction effect using a thin acrylic plate. The count rate approximately decreased to background level by inserting a plate with a thickness of 1 mm. We conclude that the impact of 210Pb contained in radiation protection glasses is negligibly small, particularly considering the usefulness of the significant external exposure reduction.

ABSTRACT

A performance test was carried out using five different gamma-ray spectrometers applicable to thyroid monitoring. The energy resolution and efficiency for 7.6-cm × 7.6-cm NaI(Tl), 5.1-cm × 5.1-cm CeBr3, 3.8-cm × 3.8-cm SrI2(Eu), and 2.5-cm × 2.5-cm SrI2(Eu) gamma-ray scintillation spectrometers and a CdTe gamma-ray semiconductor spectrometer were evaluated using the Oak Ridge Institute for Nuclear Studies thyroid-neck phantom with a mock I source for prompt thyroid monitoring after a nuclear emergency. The respective energy resolutions of the full-energy peak for ~0.360 MeV of 3.8-cm × 3.8-cm SrI2(Eu) and 2.5-cm × 2.5-cm SrI2(Eu) scintillation spectrometers were 4.2% and 4.3%, and these values were very close to the value obtained by the CdTe semiconductor spectrometer. The efficiencies of four of the gamma-ray spectrometers were compared based on the efficiency of the 7.6-cm × 7.6-cm NaI(Tl) scintillation spectrometer at 0 cm from the phantom surface, and these values were ~70% for 5.1-cm × 5.1-cm CeBr3, ~30% for 3.8-cm × 3.8-cm SrI2(Eu), 10% for 2.5-cm × 2.5-cm SrI2(Eu) and 2% for 1-cm × 0.1-cm CdTe. Furthermore, the detection limits at various dose rates for the four gamma-ray scintillation spectrometers were evaluated using the method based on International Organization for Standardization publication ISO 11929:2010.

ABSTRACT

Numerous radionuclides were released from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (F1-NPS) in Japan following the magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011. Local residents have been eager to calculate their individual radiation exposure. Thus, absorbed dose rates in the indoor and outdoor air at evacuation sites in the Fukushima Prefecture were measured using a gamma-ray measuring devices, and individual radiation exposure was calculated by assessing the radiation dose reduction efficiency (defined as the ratio of absorbed dose rate in the indoor air to the absorbed dose rate in the outdoor air) of wood, aluminum, and reinforced concrete buildings. Between March 2011 and July 2011, dose reduction efficiencies of wood, aluminum, and reinforced concrete buildings were 0.55 ± 0.04, 0.15 ± 0.02, and 0.19 ± 0.04, respectively. The reduction efficiency of wood structures was 1.4 times higher than that reported by the International Atomic Energy Agency. The efficiency of reinforced concrete was similar to previously reported values, whereas that of aluminum structures has not been previously reported. Dose reduction efficiency increased in proportion to the distance from F1-NPS at 8 of the 18 evacuation sites. Time variations did not reflect dose reduction efficiencies at evacuation sites although absorbed dose rates in the outdoor air decreased. These data suggest that dose reduction efficiency depends on structure types, levels of contamination, and evacuee behaviors at evacuation sites.

ABSTRACT

Radionuclide concentrations in environmental samples such as surface soils, plants and water were evaluated by high purity germanium detector measurements. The contribution rate of short half-life radionuclides such as (132)I to the exposure dose to residents was discussed from the measured values. The highest values of the (131)I/(137)Cs activity ratio ranged from 49 to 70 in the environmental samples collected at Iwaki City which is located to the south of the F1-NPS. On the other hand, the (132)I/(131)I activity ratio in the same environmental samples had the lowest values, ranging from 0.01 to 0.02. By assuming that the (132)I/(131)I activity ratio in the atmosphere was equal to the ratio in the environmental samples, the percent contribution to the thyroid equivalent dose by (132)I was estimated to be less than 2%. Moreover, the contribution to the thyroid exposure by (132)I might be negligible if (132)I contamination was restricted to Iwaki City.

ABSTRACT

Immediately after the accidents in the nuclear power stations in Fukushima on March 11, the Japanese Government ordered the evacuation of the residents within a 20-km radius from the station on March 12, and asked various institutions to monitor the contamination levels of the residents. Hirosaki University, which is located 355 km north of Fukushima City, decided to send support staff to Fukushima. This report summarizes the results of the exposure of 13 individual teams from March 15 to June 20. The support teams surveyed more than 5,000 people during this period. Almost all subjects had external contamination levels of less than 13 kcpm on Geiger-Müller (GM) survey meter, which is categorized as "no contamination level." The 1(st) team showed the highest external exposure dose, but the 4(th) team onward showed no significant change. Subsequently, the internal radiation exposure was measured using a whole body counter that indicated undetectable levels in all staff members. Although the measured external radiation exposure dose cannot have serious biological effects on the health of an individual, a follow-up study of the residents in Fukushima and other regions where the radioactive material has spread will be required for a long time.

ABSTRACT

A car-borne survey for dose rate in air was carried out in March and April 2011 along an expressway passing northwest of the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Station which released radionuclides starting after the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011, and in an area closer to the Fukushima NPS which is known to have been strongly affected. Dose rates along the expressway, i.e. relatively far from the power station were higher after than before March 11, in some places by several orders of magnitude, implying that there were some additional releases from Fukushima NPS. The maximum dose rate in air within the high level contamination area was 36 µGy h⁻¹, and the estimated maximum cumulative external dose for evacuees who came from Namie Town to evacuation sites (e.g. Fukushima, Koriyama and Nihonmatsu Cities) was 68 mSv. The evacuation is justified from the viewpoint of radiation protection.

The effective treatments of radiation-induced intestinal injury are currently unavailable. Developing new treatments for radiation-induced intestinal injury is thus important. The present study investigated whether transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) is able to prevent radiation-induced intestinal injury. Intestines of female nude mice (ICR nu/nu) were irradiated at a single dose of 30 Gy. Transplantation of male MSCs (C57BL/6) was then immediately performed into the walls of irradiated intestine by direct injection for the irradiation + MSCs group. Mice were weighed daily and survival was recorded for 13 days after irradiation. From 13 to 27 days after irradiation, intestines of mice were obtained in order to assay histological changes by staining with hematoxylin-eosin and Masson trichrome. Mean body weight of the irradiation + MSC group was significantly higher than that of the irradiation-only group from 8 days after irradiation. In addition, survival rates were significantly higher in the irradiation + MSC group than for the irradiation-only group from 5 days after irradiation. Histological observation revealed that intestines of irradiation + MSC-transplanted mice were thick in the submucosal and muscle layers, and had almost fully recovered from radiation-induced intestinal injury at day 27. Specifically, ulcerated areas in the intestines of the irradiation + MSC-transplanted mice were smaller by 13 days after irradiation and were fewer in numbers at 27 days when compared with the irradiation-only group. Our results suggest that transplanted MSCs may play an important role in preventing radiation-induced injury and may offer a novel method to treat radiation-induced intestinal injury.

ABSTRACT

Hypodermal injection of Toughmac-E, a digestive mixture composed of nine digestive components, or Molsin induced perturbation of the wing color pattern in 0- to 2-day-old pupae of Papilio xuthus, but had no effect on prepupae or 3- to 4-day-old pupae. The effective component in Toughmac-E was identified as Molsin, an acid carboxypeptidase of Aspergillus saitoi which specifically liberates tyrosine and phenylalanine from the C-terminal residues of proteins. The pattern perturbation occurred in either side of the fore- and hindwings of both sexes. When this enzyme was administered, stronger melanization than in the normal wings was found in the whole wings of most butterflies, but in other butterflies, the yellow region was enlarged. These findings suggest that the pattern perturbation was caused by changes in the levels of melanin and papiliochromes in scales. Melanin is a black pigment and papiliochromes are yellow pigments; their common precursor is dopamine. The normal pattern is formed by a predetermined balance of melanin and papiliochromes, whereas the deposit of an excess amount of tyrosine and/or phenylalanine disturbs this balance and results in perturbation of the color pattern. Administration of L-dopa or dopamine had no effect on the wing pattern. When the activity of an endogenous acid carboxypeptidase similar to Molsin appears in the early pupa, the summed activities of the endogenous and exogenous acid carboxypeptidases must induce a pattern perturbation. The relations between the endogenous acid carboxypeptidase and its probable substrate, the reserve protein, and the physiological roles of these relations in the regulation, utilization and excretion of amino acids are discussed.

ABSTRACT

The penis of the silkmoth, Bombyx mori, consists of two parts covered with cuticle, the corpus penis and crus penis, and a third part, the radix penis, without a cuticle but surrounded by a thick sphincter. The radix penis is divisible into anterior and posterior parts. The ductus (d.) ejaculatorius passing through the penis has no secretory cells. In the anterior radix penis, the wall of the d. ejaculatorius is thin and without folds; in the posterior section, it is thick, with folds in its lumen. The glandula (g.) prostatica is divisible into anterior and posterior parts according to differences in the histological and morphological characteristics of the cells and their secretions, which contain many heterogeneous substances. In the anterior g. prostatica, secretions accumulate separately in the anterior and posterior sections before ejaculation. Unlike the posterior region, the anterior region displays a large mass(es) at the periphery of the lumen along the secretory cell layer. Judging from staining properties, the pearly body and the first layer of the spermatophore wall, which, after copulation, form in the female bursa copulatrix, seem to be derived from the secretions of the anterior and posterior regions of the g. prostatica, respectively. The secretion of the posterior g. prostatica contains initiatorin, which acts as a sperm-activating factor in the inner and outer matrices of the spermatophore. An ejaculatory valve is found between the radix penis and the g. prostatica. The opening of this valve is regulated by the surrounding sphincter, thus impeding the back-flow of secretions and seminal fluid in the radix penis and resulting in their transport outwards during ejaculation. The musculature of the d. ejaculatorius and the corpus penis promotes further transport of these secretions into the female bursa copulatrix.

The bursa copulatrix of the silkmoth is filled with various secretions and seminal fluid transferred from the male reproductive system during mating. The contents of the bursa include a pearly body, spermatophragma, and spermatophore. The latter consists of a four-layered wall, an inner and outer matrix, and a soft plug. The components of the spermatophore are all heterogeneous, since they are formed by the partially mixed, viscous streams of the male secretions. Apyrene spermatozoa and eupyrene bundles are present only in the inner matrix, but both the matrices are important sites of sperm maturation. After spermatophore formation, the basophilic regions and periodic acid-Schiff (PAS)-granules in both matrices gradually decrease with time. The PAS-granules were identified as glycogen by α-amylase treatment. The inner matrix containing sperm and the outer matrix decrease in volume and become concentrated near the neck of the spermatophore. Apyrene and eupyrene spermatozoa can move toward the ductus seminalis after their maturation. A large, beltlike space which does not stain remains at the periphery of the spermatophore. These structural changes of spermatophore contents seem to reflect metabolic reactions in the spermatophore as the reactor for sperm maturation.
