ABSTRACT

3291 Saudi male blood donors from a non-malarial area of Saudi Arabia were investigated for their glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase levels. The prevalence of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency in the Al-Kharj area was 1.91% which is one of the lowest recorded in Saudi Arabia.

ABSTRACT

The results of gastric stimulation using varying doses of pentagastrin in twenty-five Nigerians (twenty cases of duodenal ulcer and five controls) are presented. Doses used were 4, 6, 8, and 10 micrograms/kg bodyweight. The optimal response was obtained using 6 micrograms/kg bodyweight in the test cases while the maximum acid output (MAO) was 15.14 mEq/hr (19 mEq/hr in males, 12.50 mEq/hr in females). The recommended dose for optimal response in Caucasians is 6 micrograms/kg bodyweight which correlates with the dose in our patients. However, the maximum acid output at this dose is higher in Caucasians.

ABSTRACT

Although cardiac surgery has become the standard procedure for management of intracardiac and extracardiac defects in developed countries, it is still relatively new in Africa. This report describes our first successful open heart surgery on a 16-year-old Nigerian boy who underwent open pulmonary valvotomy under cardiopulmonary bypass for congenital pulmonary stenosis at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria, on September 18, 1979.

ABSTRACT

The effects of a mixture of red pepper suspension and alpha-alanine (an amino-acid) on gastric acid secretion in 33 duodenal ulcer and 18 non-duodenal ulcer patients were studied. This mixture caused an increase of gastric acid in the two groups of patients, more so in the duodenal ulcer group (0.025 > P > 0.010). Compared with the results of previous studies the administration of alpha-alanine in red pepper suspension produced less gastric acid than the fresh red pepper suspension alone.
