ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to determine the in vitro activity of cefoxitin and imipenem against strains of the Bacteroides fragilis group isolated from the intestinal tract of humans and Callithrix penicillata marmosets. The majority of the human and marmosets B. fragilis strains was resistant to cefoxitin. The percentages of resistance to cefoxitin among B. fragilis marmoset strains were higher than those of human origin. On the other hand, the majority of the other Bacteroides of the B. fragilis group isolated from human and marmosets were susceptible to this drug. Imipenem was the most effective beta-lactam drug in this study, and we detected no resistance.

ABSTRACT

Serum samples were obtained from 249 individuals in Londrina-Paraná, Brazil. The sera were analysed for leptospiral agglutinins by microscopic agglutination tests and 22.1% were positive. Of these positives per group were 24.6% for butchers, 25.9% for farm workers, 17.2% for children and 22.2% for servants. The agglutinin titers ranged from 1:200 to 1:3200. The highest titers were obtained for the serovars sejroe (butchers), grippotyphosa (farm workers), javanica, canicola, panama, wolffi and pyrogenes (children) and butembo (servants).

ABSTRACT

In vitro 5-fluorocytosine sensitivity tests of strains were isolated from chromomycosis patients undergoing therapy. Tests were rountinely performed for 0.1, 1.0, 5.0 and 10.0 mug/ml 5-fluorocytosine concentrations. In two cases resistance could be demonstrated up to 60.0 and 100.0 mug/ml. Fungistatic activity of 5-fluorocytosine against the agents of chromomycosis was confirmed. Sensitivity tests are useful to detect resistance which may occur during treatment. They are also helpful for guiding the clinician in the establishment of new therapeutic schedules.
