The article deals with information concerning the peculiarities of diagnosis, methods of treatment, and prognosis of stage IIIa breast cancer in 219 patients. It is shown that stage IIIa cancer is a form following a peculiar clinical course which is characterized by localized, often hardly noticeable or moderate rate of growth of the tumor and a relatively favourable prognosis. The tumors were multicentric in one fifth of the patients and histologically peculiar forms of breast cancer with a more favourable prognosis in one third. Combined treatment with the use of pre- or postoperative radiotherapy or chemotherapy produces satisfactory late-term results.

The results of surgical treatment of early breast cancers are discussed. Radical mastectomy for stage I tumor and a modified mastectomy after Patey-for stage II were shown to be feasible. A cooperative randomized study on therapy of localized stage IIb and IIIb breast tumors made the case for application of polychemotherapy as a component of combined and complex therapy.

The results of medical check-ups of 17,000 females are presented. Stage I cancer of the breast was identified in 75% of the patients. Mammographic examination of this group established 64 nonpalpable carcinomas, 10 of them being preinvasive. Some criteria of forming groups at high risk for breast cancer are considered. It is stressed that despite the available range of methods of timely detection of breast cancer their integration with clinical practice is still lagging behind.

The results of microscopic study of the material obtained from 71 cases of clinically-occult cancer of the breast are reported. Generally, metastases into axillary lymph nodes are primary clinical manifestations. A histological description of dysplasia and preinvasive cancer of the breast is presented. Metastatic spreading in regional lymph nodes unaccompanied by microscopically-detectable invasive tumor growth is discussed.
