ABSTRACT

In this paper, cascaded modal interferometers constructed by strongly-coupled seven-core fiber (SC-SCF) with different lengths are demonstrated for enhanced bending sensing based on Vernier effect. The free spectral range (FSR) of a single SC-SCF interferometer is determined by the length of SC-SCF. Two SC-SCF interferometers with different FSRs are cascaded, in which, one functions as the sensor while the other functions as the reference. The wavelength shift of the envelope of the output spectrum is much larger than that of a single SC-SCF interferometer due to the Vernier effect. Therefore, enhanced sensing can be achieved. Experimental results show that the bending sensitivity of the proposed sensor is improved from -2.20 nm/m-1 (single SC-SCF interferometer) to 42.32 nm/m-1 (cascaded SC-SCF interferometers). The temperature response of the sensor is also investigated. Our proposed cascaded SC-SCF sensor has advantages of high sensitivity, ease of fabrication, and low cost. It is attractive for high precision bending sensing applications.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: This study aimed to systematically assess the quality of CPGs for motor neuron diseases (MNDs) or related disorders and identify the gaps that limit evidence-based practice. Methods: Four scientific databases and six guideline repositories were searched for eligible CPGs. Three researchers assessed the eligible CPGs using the Appraisal of Guidelines Research and Evaluation II instrument. The distribution of the level of evidence and strength of recommendation of these CPGs were determined. The univariate regression analysis was used to explore the characteristic factors affecting the quality of CPGs. Results: Fifteen CPGs met the eligibility criteria: 10 were for MND and 5 were for spinal muscular atrophy. The mean overall rating score was 44.5%, and only 3 of 15 CPGs were of high quality. The domains that achieved low mean scores were applicability (24.4%), rigor of development (39.9%), and stakeholder involvement (40.3%). Most recommendations were based on low-quality evidence and had a weak strength. The CPGs that were updated, meant for adults, and evidence based, and used a CPG quality tool and a grading system were associated with higher scores in certain specific domains and overall rating. Conclusion: The overall quality of CPGs for MNDs or related disorders was poor and recommendations were largely based on low-quality evidence. Many areas still need improvement to develop high-quality CPGs, and the use of CPG quality tools should be emphasized. A great deal of research on MNDs or related disorders is still needed to fill the large evidence gap.

ABSTRACT

A Bragg grating is successfully inscribed in a piece of strongly coupled seven-core fiber (SCF). There are two separate Bragg resonance notches observed in the transmission spectrum, corresponding to backward coupling of HE11-like and HE12-like supermodes of the SCF. The mode coupling mechanism of the Bragg grating is theoretically investigated via modeling and analyzing modal properties of the SCF. The theoretical results agree well with the experimental results. Since the SCF is spliced between two standard single mode fibers with central alignments at both ends, the transmission spectrum of the device also contains a set of interference fringe due to modal interference between the supermodes. The device's responses to temperature and curvature are experimentally measured, respectively. The obtained temperature sensitivities and curvature sensitivities of the supermode Bragg grating notches are 9.55 pm/°C and 9.55 pm/°C, -1.8 pm/m-1 and -112.3 pm/m-1, respectively. The obtained temperature sensitivity and curvature sensitivity of one of the interference spectrum dips are 11.8 pm/°C and -3909.8 pm/m-1, respectively. This device is potentially useful for simultaneous measurement of temperature and curvature.

ABSTRACT

New antibacterial 3-(aminothiazolyl)quinolones (ATQs) were designed and efficiently synthesized to counteract the growing multidrug resistance in animal husbandry. Bioactive assays manifested that N,N-dicyclohexylaminocarbonyl ATQ 10e and methyl ATQ 17a, respectively, showed better antibacterial behavior against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa than reference drug norfloxacin. Notably, highly active ATQ 17a with low hemolysis, negligible mammalian cytotoxicity, and good pharmacokinetic properties displayed low trends to induce resistance and synergistic combinations with norfloxacin. Preliminary mechanism exploration implied that representative ATQ 17a could inhibit the formation of biofilms and destroy bacterial membrane integrity, further binding to intracellular DNA and DNA gyrase to hinder bacterial DNA replication. ATQ 17a could also induce the production of excess reactive oxygen species and reduce bacterial metabolism to accelerate bacterial death. These results provided a promise for 3-(aminothiazolyl)quinolones as new potential multitargeting antibacterial agents to treat bacterial infection of animals.

ABSTRACT

The calibrator is one of the most important factors in the calibration of various laser 3D scanning instruments. The requirements for the diffuse reflection surface are emphasized in many national standards. In this study, spherical calibrator and plane calibrator comparative measurement experiments were carried out. The black ceramic standard sphere, white ceramic standard sphere, metal standard sphere, metal standard plane, and white ceramic standard plane were used to test the laser 3D scanner. In the spherical calibrator comparative measurement experiments, the results indicate that the RMS of the white ceramic spherical calibrator with a reflectance of approximately 60% is 10 times that of the metal spherical calibrator with the reflectance of approximately 15%, and the RMS of the black ceramic spherical calibrator with reflectance of approximately 11% is of the same order as the metal spherical calibrator. In the plane calibrators comparative measurement experiments, the RMS of the flatness measurement is 0.077 mm for the metal plane calibrator with a reflectance of 15%, and 2.915 mm for ceramic plane calibrator with a reflectance of 60%. The results show that when the optimal measurement distance and incident angle are selected, the reflectance of the calibrator has a great effect on the measurement results, regardless of the outlines or profiles. Based on the experiments, it is recommended to use the spherical calibrator or the standard plane with a reflectance of around 18% as the standard, which can obtain reasonable results. In addition, it is necessary to clearly provide the material category and surface reflectance information of the standard when calibrating the scanner according to the measurement standard.

ABSTRACT

Filamentous bacteria, as one of the common bacteria types in wastewater biological treatment, are considered to be the main factor to induce sludge bulking. However, because of its special filamentous shape, it plays a crucial role in the formation of sludge particles. Taking filamentous bulking sludge as the research object, the effect of filamentous bacteria on the sludge granulation process and maintaining the stability of sludge granules was studied, and the microbial diversity of the sludge system was analyzed. Filamentous bulking sludge (SVI=241.56 mL·g-1) and flocculated sludge (SVI=64.22 mL·g-1) were respectively inoculated to carry out granulation culture. The results showed that the time of particle appearance of bulking sludge and flocculated sludge was 20 days and 40 days, respectively; the mature particle sizes were 650 µm and 700 µm, respectively; and the granulation time of bulking sludge was only half that of flocculated sludge. After adding the anoxic zone, the granules were broken to differing degrees, but the SV30/SV5 value of mature granules recovered to 1 after short-term fluctuation, and the stability of the mature granules was stronger. The analysis of microbial community structure showed that the relative abundance of norank_o__Saccharimonadales, unclassified_o__Saccharimonadales, and unclassified_f__Saccharimonadaceae increased from 0.05%, 0.01%, and 0.01% to 4.09%, 3.15%, and 1.12%. The existence and accumulations of these hydrophobic bacteria were important for rapid granulation. The removal rates of COD, NH4+-N, and TN were 94%, 99%, and 35% and 92%, 97%, and 30%, respectively, in SBR1 of bulking sludge and SBR2 of flocculated sludge, and the removal rates of TP were 60% and 30%, respectively.

ABSTRACT

Weakly supervised instance segmentation (WSIS) provides a promising way to address instance segmentation in the absence of sufficient labeled data for training. Previous attempts on WSIS usually follow a proposal-based paradigm, critical to which is the proposal scoring strategy. These works mostly rely on certain heuristic strategies for proposal scoring, which largely hampers the sustainable advances concerning WSIS. Towards this end, this paper introduces a novel framework for weakly supervised instance segmentation, called Weakly Supervised R-CNN (WS-RCNN). The basic idea is to deploy a deep network to learn to score proposals, under the special setting of weak supervision. To tackle the key issue of acquiring proposal-level pseudo labels for model training, we propose a so-called Attention-Guided Pseudo Labeling (AGPL) strategy, which leverages the local maximal (peaks) in image-level attention maps and the spatial relationship among peaks and proposals to infer pseudo labels. We also suggest a novel training loss, called Entropic OpenSet Loss, to handle background proposals more effectively so as to further improve the robustness. Comprehensive experiments on two standard benchmarking datasets demonstrate that the proposed WS-RCNN can outperform the state-of-the-art by a large margin, with an improvement of 11.6% on PASCAL VOC 2012 and 10.7% on MS COCO 2014 in terms of mAP50, which indicates that learning-based proposal scoring and the proposed WS-RCNN framework might be a promising way towards WSIS.

Plants growing under reduced water availability can affect insect herbivores differently, in some instances benefitting them. However, the forces mediating these positive impacts remain mostly unclear. To identify how water availability impacts plant quality and multi-trophic interactions, we conducted manipulative field studies with two populations of the specialist herbivore Pieris rapae, and its host plant, Rorippa indica. We found that P. rapae larvae experienced higher survival on R. indica growing under low water availability compared with plants grown under high water availability. Higher survival of eggs and larvae was related to the reduced abundance of other herbivores and natural enemies. Water availability had differential impacts on other members of the herbivore community by altering plant quality. Low water availability decreased the quality of R. indica to most herbivores, as indicated by reduced abundance in the field and decreased relative growth rate in laboratory feeding assays. In contrast, P. rapae larval performance was not affected by sympatric R. indica grown under different water availability. These results indicate that local P. rapae populations possess physiological adaptations to overcome fluctuations in host quality. Our findings illustrate that reduced water availability is beneficial to a specialist herbivore but detrimental to most other herbivores. Our work highlights the complex effects of the arthropod communities associated with plants in determining the impacts of water availability on insect herbivores.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Splenic artery pseudoaneurysm (SAP) around the pancreatic head causing obstructive jaundice is an extremely rare complication but can be life threatening once occurs. This case report is to raise awareness of this catastrophic complication and share our experience of successful endovascular management. METHODS: A 47-year-old male with a history of chronic pancreatitis clinically presented with epigastric pain and jaundice. Proximal SAP complicated with obstructive jaundice was confirmed by laboratory and imaging investigations. The SAP was successfully treated by transarterial coil embolization, and the jaundice subsequently improved. RESULTS: Abdominal contrast-enhanced computed tomography 11 months after embolization showed complete occlusion and reduction in the volume of the SAP as well as normal biliary tract. CONCLUSIONS: SAP complicated with obstructive jaundice should be managed timeously and aggressively once diagnosed, given its potential adverse consequences. Transarterial embolization using the isolation technique may be a safe and effective strategy for treating this disease.

ABSTRACT

Isolated superior mesenteric artery (SMA) dissecting aneurysm is frequently symptomatic and potentially catastrophic; thus, it usually requires endovascular treatment. The endovascular management can be challenging in certain cases as catheterization of the collapsed true lumen is often very difficult. This case report is to describe a new approach for catheterization of the true lumen of the SMA in a case of isolated SMA dissecting aneurysm. A 63-year-old male with an SMA dissecting aneurysm underwent stent-graft placement for treatment. Catheterization of the true lumen via the anterograde approach was unsuccessful because of angulation and collapse of the SMA true lumen as a result of the dissecting aneurysm. A guidewire was passed through the collaterals from the celiac artery and retrogradely passed across the collapsed SMA true lumen into the aorta. We then used a snare that had been delivered through the contralateral femoral access to capture and retrieve the guidewire. A delivery system was advanced into the SMA, and a stent graft was successfully deployed to occlude the dissecting aneurysm. This report introduces a new feasible retrograde approach that provides access to the SMA true lumen via celiac collaterals in cases of difficult antegrade catheterization of an SMA dissecting aneurysm.

ABSTRACT

Bone marrow stromal cells (MSCs) are a useful source of stem cells for the treatment of various brain injury diseases due to their abundant supply and fewer ethical problems compared with transplant treatment. However, the clinical application of MSCs is limited due to allograft rejection and immunosuppression in the process of MSCs transplantation. According to previous studies, microglial cell autophagy occurs following co-culture with MSCs. In the present study, exosomes were obtained from MSCs and subsequently characterized using transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and dynamic light scattering particle size analysis. The type of microRNAs (miRs) found in the exosomes was then analyzed via gene chip. The results demonstrated that microglial cell autophagy could be induced by exosomes. This mechanism was therefore investigated further via reverse transcription-quantitative PCR, western blotting and luciferase assays. These results demonstrated that exosomes from MSCs could induce microglial cell autophagy through the miR-32-mediated regulation of disabled homolog 2-interacting protein, thus providing a theoretical basis for the clinical application of miRs in MSCs.

Phototriggered drug delivery systems (PTDDSs) facilitate controlled delivery of drugs loaded on photoactive platform to the target region under light stimulation. The present study investigated the synthesis and efficacy of carbazole-coumarin (CC)-fused heterocycles as a PTDDS platform for the photocontrolled release of a chemotherapeutic agent, chlorambucil, in an in vitro model of human breast and leukemia cancer cells. CC-fused heterocycles were constructed using 4-hydroxycarbazole as the starting material, and further modification of these heterocycles yielded two CC derivatives. CC-7 with an additional - COOH group and CC-8 with the triphenylphosphonium (TPP) group, a mitochondria-targeting ligand introduced in the carbazole ring, dissolved in polar solvents and exhibited emission bands at 360 and 450 nm, respectively. The results indicate that visible light of 405 nm triggers the photolysis of the CC-drug conjugate and efficiently delivers the drug in both in vitro cancer cell models. Cytotoxicity evaluation indicates the suppression of proliferation of both types of cells treated with CC-8 under synergy effect combining drug potency and photosensitization. Further, the lower IC50 of CC-8 toward leukemia cells suggests the efficacy of the TPP ligand in increasing the bioavailability of CC-drug conjugates in leukemia treatment. Studies on mitochondria-targeting drug delivery systems are required for improving the performance of anticancer drugs.

ABSTRACT

Background: Acute aorta dissection (AD) is a fatal emergency, however, studies addressing the clinical characteristics, management, and outcome of acute AD in young adult patients aged under 45 years in China are very few.Methods: A retrospective study including 490 patients with acute AD as the final diagnosis was conducted. Patients' demographics, clinical characteristics, medical history, and laboratory and diagnostic imaging findings were retrieved from medical records. Results: The median age of young adult patients with acute AD was 38 years old with an interquartile range from 33 to 41. Male and smoker constituted 84.49% and 50.61% of the cohort, respectively. Hypertension was found in 54.49%, while Marfan syndrome was seen in 4.29% of the patients. Abrupt onset of chest or back pain was the most common symptoms (85.31%), while altered consciousness, coma and oliguria were less reported. Most patients (89.39%) were managed with surgical interventions. Typical complications (central nervous system complications, spinal cord ischemia, myocardial ischemia/infarction, mesenteric ischemia/infarction and acute renal failure) were seen in a small portion of treated patients during perioperative period. For in-hospital mortality there were 24 (∼5%) cases recorded. Correlation analysis indicated that perioperative complications were associated with the length of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) (P < 0.0001), and mortality after surgery correlated history of prior cardiac surgery (P = 0.043). Conclusion: CPB and prior cardiac surgery were associated with perioperative complications and mortality after surgery, respectively. The findings are valuable to the further refinement of diagnosis and surgical management of patients with acute aortic dissection.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the clinical outcome of corticosteroid and/or immunosuppressive treatment preoperatively in patients with Takayasu's arteritis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty-six patients with Takayasu's arteritis who received cardiovascular surgery between January 2010 and December 2015 in Beijing Anzhen Hospital were enrolled in this study. Their clinical characteristics, preoperative drug therapy, surgical treatment, and pathological examination results were retrospectively analyzed for the effect of drugs on outcome of the surgery. RESULTS: All 8 patients with active disease prior to surgery had postoperative complications including one death due to stubborn perivalvular regurgitation induced heart failure during the perioperative period. Among 38 patients without active disease prior to surgery, only 4 patients (10.5%) had postoperative complications. Thirty-four patients showed symptomatic relief in the perioperative period, of whom 23 patients treated with corticosteroid and/or immunosuppressive agents preoperatively. CONCLUSION: The surgery can effectively improve the symptoms of patients with Takayasu's arteritis. Active disease of Takayasu's arteritis markedly increased risk for postoperative complication and resulted in poor outcome of the surgery. Treatment with corticosteroid and/or immunosuppressive agents before surgery can effectively control the patient's condition, improve the rate of remission, and effectively reduce the incidence of postoperative complications.

ABSTRACT

In this article, we demonstrate the self-assembly and photoresponive behavior of a novel coumarin-based amphiphilic dendron in both aqueous solution and air-water interface. The dendritic structure, namely C-IG1, was composed of a lipophilic cholesterol and hydrophilic poly(amido amine) (PAMAM) dendron, and the amphiphilic counterpart is interconnected by a photolabile coumarin carbonate ester, enabling the photoinduced degradation of the amphiphiles in protic solvents via SN1-like mechanism. A Nile red solubilization fluorescence assay suggests a low critical aggregation concentration for the micelle formation of C-IG1 in aqueous solutions (3.9 × 10-5 M); the Langmuir analysis further indicates that C-IG1 possesses significant compressibility in air-water interface, eventually forming homogeneous monolayers with a final molecular area (A0) of 36 Å2. Notably, the micelles and Langmuir monolayer are quite stable until photo-triggered dissociation based on the photocleavage of C-IG1 amphiphile activated by 365-nm incident light. Moreover, the transition in interfacial morphology of the Langmuir monolayer during the assembly and photodegradation processes also can be visually analyzed by incorporating Nile red probes with in situ monitoring through fluorescence microscopy. The thin film deposited on a glass substrate by the Langmuir-Blodgett technique also shows a photoresponsive behavior based on the change in the contact angles of a water droplet on the surface upon light stimulation. The binding affinity of C-IG1 and cyclic DNA determined by the fluorescence quenching analysis of the coumarin reporter suggests a ground-state macromolecular complexation process occurring through polyvalent interactions between the pseudodendrimers and biomacromolecules. The ethidium bromide displacement assay further indicates thus dendriplex formation at low nitrogen-to-phosphorous value (N/P < 1) and confirms that the decomplexation accompanied by DNA release can be achieved through an active phototriggered route under spatiotemporal control.

ABSTRACT

Dynamic Causal Modeling (DCM) has been extended for the analysis of electroencephalography (EEG) based on a specific biophysical and neurobiological generative model for EEG. Comparing to methods that summarize neural activities with linear relationships, the generative model enables DCM to better describe how signals are generated and better reveal the underlying mechanism of the activities occurring in human brains. Since DCM provides us with an approach to the effective connectivity between brain areas, with exponential ranking, the abnormality of the observed signals can be further located to a specific brain region. In this paper, a combination of DCM and exponential ranking is proposed as a new method aiming at searching for the abnormal brain regions which are associated with chronic tinnitus.

ABSTRACT

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) can strongly interact with both organic and inorganic contaminants to influence their transportation, transformation, bioavailability, toxicity and even their ultimate fate. Within this work, DOM was extracted from urban stormwater runoff samples collected from a regular sampling site of a typical residential area in Beijing, China. Copper(II) ions were selected as model to investigate the interactions between DOM and typical heavy metals. Both ultraviolet (UV) absorbance and fluorescence titration methods were introduced to determine the complex capacities (CL) and conditional stability constants (log KM) of bonding between DOM and copper (II) ions, which revealed that the values of CL were 85.62 and 87.23 µmol mg-1 and the log KM values were 5.37 and 5.48, respectively. The results suggested the successful complexation between DOM and copper(II) ions. Furthermore, morphology of the DOM binding to copper(II) ions was confirmed by both energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), which can facilitate to clarify the corresponding mechanism. The Cu 2p3/2 peak at 933.7 eV and the characteristic shake-up peaks of Cu-O were found in the XPS spectra, implying that copper(II) ions might coordinate with hydroxyl (aliphatic or phenolic) or carboxyl groups. With these profitable results, it can be concluded that DOM in urban stormwater runoff has a strong binding affinity with copper(II) ions, which may further lead to potentially significant influence on their migration and transformation.

ABSTRACT

Pollution emissions impose serious social negative externalities, especially in terms of public health. To reduce pollution emissions cost-effectively, the marginal abatement costs (MACs) of pollution emissions must be determined. Since the industrial sectors are the essential pillars of China's economic growth, as well as leading energy consumers and sulfur dioxide (SO2) emitters, estimating MACs of SO2 emissions at the industrial level can provide valuable information for all abatement efforts. This paper tries to address the critical and essential issue in pollution abatement: How do we determine the MACs of pollution emissions in China? This paper first quantifies the SO2 emission contribution of different industrial sectors in the Chinese economy by an Input-Output method and then estimates MACs of SO2 for industrial sectors at the national level, provincial level, and sectoral level by the shadow price theory. Our results show that six sectors (e.g., the Mining and Washing of Coal sector) should be covered in the Chinese pollution emission trading system. We have also found that the lowest SO2 shadow price is 2000 Yuan/ton at the national level, and that shadow prices should be set differently at the provincial level. Our empirical study has several important policy implications, e.g., the estimated MACs may be used as a pricing benchmark through emission allowance allocation. In this paper, the MACs of industrial sectors are calculated from the national, provincial and sectoral levels; therefore, we provide an efficient framework to track the complex relationship between sectors and provinces.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: This study applied a combined cancer biomarker panel to clinically identify small cell lung cancer (SCLC) and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in a high-risk population. METHODS: The serum levels of 4 biomarkers (progastrin-releasing peptide [ProGRP], carcinoembryonic antigen [CEA], squamous cell carcinoma antigen [SCC], and cytokeratin 19 fragment [CYFRA21-1]) were determined in 153 patients with a high risk of lung cancer (12 with a new diagnosis of SCLC, 52 with NSCLC, and 89 without lung cancer). Information about diagnosis delays was collected through interviews of all participants. RESULTS: Significantly higher serum levels of ProGRP (P < .0001) were found among the SCLC patients versus the rest of the population. A receiver operating characteristic curve analysis established the cutoff values of ProGRP, CEA, SCC, and CYFRA21-1 as 300 pg/mL, 7.3 ng/mL, 3 ng/mL, and 6.5 ng/mL, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity of ProGRP in diagnosing SCLC were 75% and 100%, respectively. Among the 14 lung cancer patients with a false-negative computed tomography (CT) result, the diagnostic panel detected 8 additional cancers. CONCLUSIONS: This panel increased the diagnostic specificity for high-risk subjects (those with renal failure being excluded), and auxiliary to a CT scan, it increased the sensitivity for patients with lung cancer. These results might be applied to shorten the diagnosis delay at health care institutions in China.

ABSTRACT

To analyze the characteristic of marine emission in Shenzhen City, activity-based and fuel-based approaches were utilized to develop the marine emission inventory for the year of 2010, using the vessel files from the Lloyd's register of shipping (LR) and vessel track data from the automatic identification system (AIS). The marine emission inventory was temporally (resolution: 1 hour) and spatially (resolution: 1 km x 1 km) allocated based on the vessel track data. Results showed that total emissions of SO2, NO(x), CO, PM10, PM2.5 and VOCs from marine vessels in Shenzhen City were about 13.6 x 10(3), 23.3 x 10(3), 2.2 x 10(3), 1.9 x 10(3), 1.7 x 10(3) and 1. x 10(3) t, respectively. Among various types of marine vessels, emission from container vessels was the highest; for different driving modes, hotelling mode was found with the largest mission. Marine emissions were generally higher in the daytime, with vessel-specific peaks. For spatial distributions, in general, marine emissions were zonally distributed with hot spots in the western port group, Dapeng Bay and the key waterway.
