ABSTRACT

Liver metastases from pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) are highly fatal. A rat-based patient-derived tumor xenograft (PDX) model is available for transcatheter therapy. This study aimed to create an immunodeficient rat model with liver xenografts of patient-derived primary PDAC and evaluate efficacy of hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy with cisplatin in this model. Three patient-derived PDACs were transplanted into the livers of 21 rats each (totally, 63 rats), randomly assigned into hepatic arterial infusion, systemic venous infusion, and control groups (n = 7 each) four weeks post-implantation. Computed tomography evaluated tumor volumes before and four weeks after treatment. Post-euthanasia, resected tumor specimens underwent histopathological examination. A liver-implanted PDAC PDX rat model was established in all 63 rats, with first CT identifying all tumors. Four weeks post-treatment, arterial infusion groups exhibited significantly smaller tumor volumes than controls for all three tumors on second CT. Xenograft tumors histologically maintained adenocarcinoma features compared to original patient tumors. Ki67 expression was significantly lower in arterial infusion groups than in the other two for the three tumors, indicating reduced tumor growth in PDX rats. A liver-implanted PDAC PDX rat model was established as a rat-based preclinical platform. Arterial cisplatin infusion chemotherapy represents a potential therapy for PDAC liver metastasis.

ABSTRACT

Phase transitions in blue phase liquid crystals (BPLCs) have attracted significant attention from the technical perspective of BP orientation control and the theoretical perspective of analogs with crystalline solids. The phase transition phenomena in BPs significantly depend on the phase state before the transition. In this study, we focused on the cholesteric (Ch)-BPI phase transition and found that BPI crystals exhibited a square shape upon the phase transition from the uniformly oriented Ch phase to the BPI phase. This square crystal shape was common across three BPLC materials with different elastic constants, and the shape reflected the crystal axis. The in-plane crystal orientation correlates with the easy axis on the substrate surface, suggesting that the [011] axis tends to coincide with the easy axis. However, the easy axis has little effect on the crystal growth rate. Furthermore, scratches on the substrate surface promoted nucleation. Based on this behavior, it was demonstrated that the nucleation position and density could be controlled by intentionally disturbing the Ch orientation by locally changing the easy axis using photoalignment. This study focused on the anisotropic crystal growth of BPI, providing interesting insights into LC phase transitions and soft matter crystal growth. In addition, it offers techniques for the fabrication of large BPI crystals, contributing to the enhanced electrical and optical performances of BPLC devices.

ABSTRACT

Left-sided portal hypertension (LSPH) causes varices and splenomegaly due to splenic vein issues. Colonic varices are rare and lack standardized treatment. We report the successful treatment of colonic varices caused by LSPH, by addressing both the afferent and efferent veins. A 70-year-old man with distal cholangiocarcinoma had surgery without splenic vein resection, leading to proximal splenic vein stenosis and varices at multiple locations. Percutaneous transhepatic splenic venography revealed that collateral veins flowed into the ascending colonic varices and returned to the portal vein. Complete thrombosis of the varices was achieved by injecting sclerosants and placing coils in both the afferent and efferent veins. The procedure was safe and effective, with no variceal recurrence. This approach provides a minimally invasive option for treating colonic varices associated with LSPH.

ABSTRACT

A 55-year-old patient was admitted for variceal treatment, a complication of chronic portal hypertension and liver cirrhosis. Imaging studies revealed prominent duodenal varices, the pancreaticoduodenal vein as its afferent pathway, a drainer vessel into the inferior vena cava, and a paraumbilical vein. We successfully performed complete obliteration of the varix, including its afferent and efferent vessels, via the paraumbilical vein approach.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Recently, the utility of non-contrast MR endolymphatic hydrops imaging was reported, but the pitfall was indicated based on T2 preparation pulse sensitiveness to local static magnetic field (B0) inhomogeneity. The purpose of this study is to clarify the effects of surrounding magnetic environment of temporal bone to lymphatic fluid signal intensity on the T2 preparation and fluid attenuated inversion recovery pulse combination (T2prep 3D-FLAIR) technique in human inner ear study. METHODS: We prepared a custom-made phantom comprising a chicken leg bone submersed in saline. To evaluate signal characteristics of saline close to bone, multiple TE gradient echoes, T2 relaxation time measurement, and T2prep 3D-FLAIR image were acquired. In the vicinity of the vestibule of a healthy volunteer, similar examinations were executed. Additionally, to investigate the influence of the magnetic environment from B0, the evaluation was performed in five head position settings relative to B0. RESULTS: In both the phantom case and volunteer case, together with T2 star signal intensity attenuation, T2 relaxation time shortening was observed on fluid around bone. Specifically, at the outer edge in the vestibule and cochlea of the volunteer, T2 relaxation time was shorter than that of center of vestibule and that of cochlea. In the T2prep 3D-FLAIR image, higher signal intensity was observed at the same location on the outer edge of them. These results showed that bone affects surrounding fluid magnetic environment. Also, for B0 influence, despite a large area variation ratio, there is no statistically significant difference correlated to orientation within B0. CONCLUSION: The surrounding magnetic environment of the temporal bone affects lymphatic fluid signals of the peripheral part of the human inner ear on T2prep 3D-FLAIR technique.

ABSTRACT

The standard treatment for ruptured duodenal varices remains to be established. Emergency balloon-occluded retrograde transvenous obliteration is challenging in patients with bleeding because re-rupture of varices can occur due to increased pressure when using the retrograde approach. Herein, we describe a case in which a catheter was retrogradely advanced to the afferent vein beyond bleeding duodenal varices; however, the varices re-ruptured during coil embolization, and a part of the catheter was deviated into the intestinal tract. The rupture site was embolized by liquid embolic materials from the microcatheter. Embolization via retrograde approach needs to be carefully performed.

ABSTRACT

Orientation analysis of liquid crystal (LC) devices is important for understanding and controlling light propagation behavior in these devices. Blue phases (BPs)─unique LC phases that self-organize into three-dimensional helical structures─are candidate materials for LC-based reflective diffractors. We realized BPII deflectors with large diffraction angles using one-dimensional surface alignment patterns. We analyzed the BPII lattice arrangement in the deflector based on Bragg reflections and demonstrated that the lattice structure was slanted with respect to the substrate, which was confirmed using transmission electron microscopy. In addition, we calculated the similarity between the alignment pattern on the substrate surface and the director arrangement of BPII near the interface, confirming that the structure observed experimentally matched the most probable calculated structure. Thus, this study contributes to the optical design of BPII deflectors and provides information on the orientation mechanism in high-order self-organizing soft matter structures.

ABSTRACT

A fast meniscus-guided coating for ultrahighly oriented thin films of a typical donor-acceptor π-conjugated polymer, poly[2,5-(2-octyldodecyl)-3,6-diketopyrrolopyrrole-alt-5,5-(2,5-di(thien-2-yl)thieno[3,2-b]thiophene)](PDPP-DTT) was realized. A coating speed higher than 100 mm/s, which was regarded as a Landau-Levich regime, was applicable. The 2D order parameter (S2) of the thin films changed by selecting the solvent and adjusting the initial concentration of the solution, and the large elongated rodlike preaggregates formed particularly in chlorobenzene contributed to the high orientation in the solid film state, resulting in the highest value of S2 = 0.87. Focused on the PDPP-DTT preaggregate formation in the solution, the SAXS analysis was carried out to investigate the shape and size of the preaggregates. The mechanism of the molecular orientation was discussed by taking the preaggregates and the solution flow under the coating process into account.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the changes in apparent diffusion coefficients (ADCs) due to differences in diffusion time reflect tissue properties in actual measurements of phantoms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Various n-alkane phantoms and sucrose/collagen phantoms with various collagen densities were set up with and without polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) foam with an average pore diameter of 300 µm. Thus, n-alkanes or sucrose/collagen represented substrate viscosity and the presence of PVA foam represented tissue structure with septum. Diffusion-weighted images with various diffusion times (7.71-60 ms) were acquired using pulsed-gradient spin-echo (PGSE) and oscillating-gradient spin-echo (OGSE) sequences. The ADCs of the phantoms with and without PVA foam were calculated. RESULTS: The ADCs of some of the phantoms without PVA decreased with diffusion times decreased. In the n-alkane phantoms, only C8H18 showed significantly different ADCs depending on the use of PVA foam in the OGSE sequence. On the other hand, sucrose/collagen phantoms showed significant differences according to diffusion time. The ADCs of the phantoms decreased as the molecular size of the n-alkanes or collagen density of the sucrose/collagen phantom increased. Compared to phantoms without PVA foam, the ADC of the phantoms with PVA foam decreased as the diffusion time increased. CONCLUSION: Changes in ADCs due to differences in diffusion time reflect tissue properties in actual measurements of phantoms. These changes in ADCs can be used for tissue characterization in vivo.

ABSTRACT

In this work, we investigate the three-dimensional lattice deformation of blue phase (BP) liquid crystals under electrostriction. Using the in situ measurement of light diffraction signals from a twinned crystal, we propose a method to experimentally determine the lattice constants of BPs under an electric field; the overlap angle in the diffraction pattern of BP twinning domains gives the ratio of lattice constants in the lateral direction of the field, which can be analyzed together with the Bragg reflection peak wavelength along the field direction to yield three-dimensional lattice constants. The obtained values are confirmed to show good agreement with the diffraction data measured from a converging monochromatic light. Furthermore, by applying the method to BPs in a thin cell and specifying the transitions of azimuthal orientation, three-dimensional lattice deformation of BP I crystals and evolution of the azimuthal orientation are clarified under the electrostriction. Results reveal that the BPs confined to thin films undergo discrete elongation along the field direction and the BP I crystal undergoes larger lattice deformation in the field-perpendicular directions than that along the field. Our work allows a relatively easy determination of three-dimensional lattice constants of deformed BP crystals under an electric field, and the obtained results provide important insights into the understanding of the electrostriction behaviour of BPs towards improvement of the electro-optical performance of BP devices in practical applications.

ABSTRACT

Optical vortices (OVs) with orbital angular momenta show promise for various optical applications. Spiral zone plates (SZPs) can generate a focused OV and are thus used in applications like edge-enhanced imaging. However, conventional SZPs have low diffraction efficiency because they operate based on amplitude modulation. This study proposes a liquid crystal spiral zone plate (LCSZP) that operates based on phase modulation and demonstrates the generation of a focused OV with high efficiency and electric tunability. The LCSZP has no threshold voltage owing to its homeotropic/planar hybrid alignment regions, and it can find applications in imaging, laser processing, and optical manipulation.

ABSTRACT

A large-angle polarization volume grating (PVG) with circular-polarization selectivity is demonstrated using a three-dimensional chiral liquid crystal with simple cubic symmetry - the blue phase (BP) II. We confirm defect-free alignment of the BP crystal on a periodically patterned substrate down to a period of 700 nm, with Kossel diagrams and far-field diffraction patterns suggesting that the lattice becomes slanted within the cell to accommodate to the imprinted pattern. We further demonstrate a tunable PVG by exploiting the external field-responsivity of BPs, making this PVG attractive for a wide range of applications from tunable photonics to augmented reality.

ABSTRACT

Crystal twinning is an intergrowth of two or more single crystals of the same species with specific crystallographic relations in their orientations. Here, we perform microscopic optical characterization of (211) twins in the three-dimensional liquid crystalline phase known as the blue phase (BP), with I4132 space group symmetry. We describe the effect of twinning on the optical diffraction pattern-Kossel pattern-of blue phases and analyze the patterns to deduce structural information such as the twin elements and the previously unnoticed deviations from the perfect cubic structure at zero electric field. Further, we obtain in situ observations as a field is applied along the [110] direction of the twinning crystals and find that the twin boundary shows a pinning effect that defines the orientation of the twinned pair through the cubic-to-orthogonal structure transformation. Our findings not only provide important insights for the application of BPs as electro-optic crystals but also present a step in understanding the hierarchical structures that are crystallographic.

ABSTRACT

Stomal varices are rare and ectopic varices defined as dilated portosystemic collateral veins located in sites other than the gastro-esophageal region. These sometimes cause recurrent bleedings and can be life-threatening. Optimal treatments have yet to be established. We report 3 cases of repetitive bleeding stomal varices in which resolution of bleeding was obtained over the medium term with minimally invasive approaches including balloon-occluded retrograde transvenous obliteration and variceal embolization by ultrasound-guided direct puncture. Rebleeding did not occur in any patients within 2-15 months of follow-up. Serious complications over Clavien-Dindo grade I were not found.

ABSTRACT

Organic compounds capable of excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) show fluorescence with a large Stokes shift and serve as solid-state emitters, luminescent dopants, and fluorescence-based sensing materials. Fluorescence of ESIPT molecules is usually increased in the solid state, but is weak in solvents due to the accelerated non-radiative decays by rotational motions of a part of the molecular core in these environments. Here we report, using a representative ESIPT motif 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)benzothiazole (HBT), the extended-conjugation strategy of keeping sufficient fluorescence efficiency both in the solid state and in organic media. The introduction of an alkyl-terminated phenylene-ethynylene group into the HBT molecule dramatically enhances the fluorescence quantum yield from 0.01 to 0.20 in toluene and from 0.07 to 0.32 in a representative room-temperature nematic liquid crystal, 4-pentyl-4'-cyano biphenyl (5CB). The newly-synthesized CnP-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-HBT (n = 5 or 8) serves as a fluorescent dopant in 5CB and exhibits anisotropic fluorescence with the order parameter of 0.48, where the luminescence is controlled by the applied electric-field. The enhanced emission efficiency is rationalized by the larger height of energy barrier for the ESIPT process due to the introduction of phenylene-ethynylene groups.

ABSTRACT

This report shows that, by using simple transient photovoltage (TPV) measurements, we can reveal a significant correlation between the TPV decay characteristics and the performance of these perovskite solar cells. TPV decay seems to be composed of a rising part in a short interval after photoexcitation and a long decaying part that extends up to tens of milliseconds. These decay behaviors look different depending on the mesoscopic structures and the perovskite morphology formed therein, as seen from their Scanning Electron Microcopy images and X-ray diffraction patterns. The decay part can be fitted with a three-exponential decay, which reflects different kinetics of electrons in the perovskite/TiO2 layer. On the other hand, the rising part must be fit by a decay equation derived by employing the convolution theorem, where the rising part can be assigned to the electron transport process inside the perovskite layer and the decaying part can be assigned to electron back-transfer. The characteristics can be then understood by considering the effect of crystal defects and trap states in the perovskite grains and perovskite interface with its transport layer, which is TiO2 in this study. Although the TPV decay occurs in a time range much longer than the primary process of photoexcitation as commonly observed in transient photoluminescence spectroscopy, the processes involved in this TPV strongly correlates with the performance of these perovskite solar cells.

ABSTRACT

Three-dimensional (3D) photonic crystals like Blue Phases, self-assemble in highly organized structures with a sub-micrometer range periodicity, producing selective Bragg reflections in narrow bands. Current fabrication techniques are emerging at a fast pace, however, manufacturing large 3D monocrystals still remains a challenge, and controlling the crystal orientation of large crystals has not yet been achieved. In this work, we prepared ideal 3D Blue Phase macrocrystals with a controlled crystal orientation. We designed a method to obtain large monocrystals at a desired orientation and lattice size (or reflection wavelength) by adjusting the precursor materials formulation and a simple surface treatment. Moreover, using the same method, it is possible to predict unknown lattice orientations of Blue Phases without resorting to Kossel analysis. Producing large 3D photonic crystals that are also functional tunable structures is likely to have a direct impact on new photonic applications, like microcavity lasers, displays, 3D lasers, or biosensors.

ABSTRACT

Various approaches are being pursued to realize compact optical elements with the ability to manipulate light, but it is difficult to simultaneously achieve high reflectivity and the ability to see through the element. Here, we present a reflective computer-generated hologram that is completely transparent in the visible, based on the Berry (geometric) phase in a self-organizing Bragg reflector. The Bragg reflector has a helical dielectric tensor distribution with the phase information imprinted in the distribution of the optic axis on the substrate. The structure possesses only a single Fourier component and high-order reflections are suppressed; thus, the device appears completely transparent by setting the main reflection band outside the visible range for all angles of incidence accessible by ambient light. On the other hand, the encoded phase information can be played back using visible light by increasing the accessible incidence angle, which we demonstrate experimentally by (i) attaching a coupling prism, and (ii) integrating the device in a waveguide. Bragg-Berry reflectors thus enable a new route to realize advanced optical elements with no apparent reflection in the visible region.

ABSTRACT

A-58-year-old woman was diagnosed with breast cancer 8 years ago at another hospital, but refused surgical treatment. From 2 years ago, her skin invasion of cancer lesions began bleeding. The patient required frequent blood transfusions due to anemia associated with repeated bleeding. She was referred to our department for local treatment and palliative care. Diagnostic imaging revealed multiple lung, bone and liver metastasis. The patient refused to receive systemic chemotherapy, and she was recommended radiation therapy for repeated massive bleeding, but her consent was not obtained. She agreed to receive arterial embolization from the tumor-bearing vessels plus intravenous anti-cancer drug therapy. The hemostatic effect was observed for 4 to 5 weeks per treatment, and tumor reduction was also observed. She received a total of 6 treatments during 8 months until her death. These treatments were effective in maintaining quality of life at the end of life.

ABSTRACT

We have studied nematic hybrid films with homeotropic alignment at the top surface and various controlled degrees of in plane ordering, going from a random degenerate organization to a completely uniform alignment along one direction, at the bottom one. We show, by Monte Carlo (MC) computer simulations and experiments on photopatterned films with the bottom support surface fabricated with in-plane order similar to the simulated ones, that the point defects observed in the case of random planar orientations at the bottom tend to arrange along a filament as the surface ordering is sufficiently increased. MC simulations complement the polarized microscopy texture observations allowing to inspect the 3D structure of the defects and examine the role of elastic constants.
