ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To assess (1) whether Hawley retainers cause speech disturbance and (2) the duration of speech adaptation to Hawley retainers with objective and subjective tests. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve adolescents, aged 11.11 to 18.03 years, were included in this study. The assessment of speech sounds were done subjectively using an articulation test and objectively using acoustic analysis before and after Hawley retainer application. RESULTS: After wearing Hawley retainers, patients showed statistically significant speech disturbances on consonants [s] and [z]. Regarding the vowels, statistically significant changes were recorded with [i], while F1 increased and F2 and F3 decreased. CONCLUSIONS: The tongue changes its target position with the application of a foreign body within the mouth; however, in time it adapts to that new situation.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to find average nasalance values of Turkish syllables with the nasometer. METHODS: This study is done at Hacettepe University Department of Otolaryngology Audiology and Speech Pathology Unit with 50 participating children. RESULTS: The normative nasalance values of Turkish phonemes are determined. It is found that nasalance scores of syllables that is combined with/i/phoneme is statistically have higher nasalance scores than/a/and/e/phonemes (p<0.05). There is no difference find statistically between age and nasalance value (p>0.05). Statistical difference between age and nasalance score is found in "iki, se, ese, isi, aç, eç, çi, içi, iç, al, yi, iy, iyi, yiy, ana, ne" syllables (p<0.05). These phonemes have positive relation with the age. There is no statistical difference between sex and nasalance scores (p<0.05). Statistical difference is only found in "tat- te- li- lil- aya" syllables (p<0.05). On these phonemes it is found that girls have higher nasalance score than boys. CONCLUSION: As a result, it is thought that gathered nasalance values of Turkish phonemes will be useful for resonance disorder diagnosis and follow ups on treatment.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Otoacoustic emissions (OAE) are transmitted from the cochlea to the ear canal via the middle ear and the transmission properties of the middle ear directly influence OAE characteristics. The purpose of this study was to establish the mechanisms of changes occurred in middle ear by tympanometric, audiometric and OAE examination. METHODS: Audiometric and tympanometric examination were performed and otoacoustic emissions were recorded from 22 normal ears and 52 ears with middle ear effusions and repeated 3 months later. RESULTS: Results of the air conduction in study group were significantly different from the control group and we found significant recovery in 3 months. When we analysed the DPOAE evaluation results in our study, some of the DPOAE parameters were found to be different between the control and the study group at low frequencies. Changes in the amplitude, especially at low frequencies, were statistically significant after 3 months. CONCLUSION: The results of this study revealed that measurement of otoacoustic emissions, especially distortion product otoacoustic emissions, is helpful in evaluating the condition of middle ear during the treatment.

ABSTRACT

In this study, the adaptation of patients to removable partial dentures was evaluated related to articulation of Turkish phonemes. Articulation of /t,d.n,l,r/, /g,k/, /b,p,m/ and /s,z,s,v,f,y,j,h,c/ phonemes were evaluated by three speech pathologists, on records taken from 15 patients before the insertion of a removable partial denture, just after insertion, and one week later. The test consisted of evaluation of phoneme articulation of independent syllables in terms of distortion, omission, substitution, mass effect, hypernasality and hyponasality. Data were evaluated with Cochrane Q. McNemar and Kruskal-Wallis tests. The results showed that for some phonemes, problems in articulation occurred after the insertion of a removable partial denture while for others a significant amelioration was observed after the insertion of a removable partial denture. In general, problems in articulation of evaluated phonemes were resolved after one week of use.
