ABSTRACT

Leiomyosarcoma is a malignant tumour of smooth muscle cells. Usually is found in the gastrointestinal and female genital tracts, but is extremely rare in the larynx. Diagnosis is based in immunohistochemical studies. From the related literature is concluded that this tumour has a very aggressive behavior, with a very bad prognosis in spite of a radical surgery. A case of glottic Laryngeal Leiomyosarcoma (LL) treated with partial surgery is presented, There isn't any evidence of recurrent or metastases after a two years follow-up.

ABSTRACT

El Leiomiosarcoma es un tumor maligno de células musculares lisas. Se localiza habitualmente a nivel gastrointestinal y genital femenino, pero es excepcional en la laringe. El diagnóstico se fundamenta en técnicas inmunohistoquímicas. De la literatura existente se concluye que se trata de un tumor con un comportamiento muy agresivo, lo cual le confiere un mal pronóstico pese a efectuar cirugías radicales. Se presenta un caso de Leiomiosarcoma de Laringe (LL) de localización glótica, tratado mediante cirugía parcial. No hay signos de recidiva ni mestástasis tras dos años de seguimiento (AU)

ABSTRACT

Hearing loss in patients with ischemic heart disease traditionally has been attributed to atheromatous cerebral vascular disease. In this study, the site of the auditory lesion was sought in patients with ischemic heart disease and perceptive hearing loss. Standard brainstem evoked response audiometry (BSER) with increased stimulation rate (ISR) were performed. Sixty-seven patients admitted for coronary artery disease were examined. Fifty-seven recordings were complete and evaluable. All the cases of hearing loss were endocochlear. In 4 patients. BSER and ISR detected subclinical retrocochlear lesions that were compatible with ischemic disease. The results suggest that selective early cochlear ischemia can occur in young persons with heart disease. The sensitivity of BSER with ISR for detecting ischemic brainstem lesions was confirmed.

ABSTRACT

SCC antigen (Ag) is a tumor-associated Ag (TAA) obtained from squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix. This study reports the evaluation of this TAA in patients with head and neck malignant diseases and its possible prognostic value. Serum samples from 28 patients with benign head and neck diseases from 399 patients with cancer were obtained prior to treatment. SCC Ag serum levels were determined by radioimmunoassay using 2.5 ng/ml as the upper limit of normality. Elevated SCC Ag serum levels were found in 14% of 28 patients with benign diseases, in 29% of 217 patients with primary tumors, in 48% of 46 patients with recurrence (43% in locoregional, 64% in metastases) and in 4% of 136 patients with no evidence of disease. In patients with primary tumors, SCC Ag serum levels were related to nodal involvement and tumor location with significantly higher levels in node-positive patients (p = 0.001) and in tumors located in the nasopharynx and piriform sinus (p = 0.02). Presurgical SCC Ag serum levels in patients with primary tumors had prognostic value with shorter disease-free survival in those patients with abnormal values of this TAA (p < 0.001), in both, node-negative and node-positive patients (p < 0.01). Multivariate analyses showed that SCC Ag is a significant independent predictor of disease-free survival even when other prognostic factors are considered. In conclusion, pretreatment SCC Ag serum levels are an independent prognostic indicator in patients with head and neck malignancies.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to verify the supposed pathological hearing loss in those patients with ischemic heart disease, as well as to determine its features and possible clinical usefulness. Two groups were made: group A (n = 65), patients admitted for acute episode of ischemic heart disease, group B (n = 60), patients without cardiac or auditive disorders. Auditive assessment included standard PTA and Bera. Cardiologic evaluation was made through cardiac catheterism with coronariography. Results confirm the existence of a clinical association between "perceptive hearing loss" and "ischemic heart disease", independently of the age, with a characteristic pattern of hearing loss, and also show the existence of a high risk subgroup within the population with coronary risk.

ABSTRACT

Meningiomas are benign tumors developed from aracnoid meningeal cells. Its primary extracranial and extravertebral onset is a rarity, arising more frequently in the scalp and orbit. Its beginning in nasal fosae is considered exceptional. Diagnosis will be based on cranial CTY scan and histology of the whole tumour once extirpated. A case of advanced primary nasal meningioma is reported. The AA. emphasize the difficulties in presurgical diagnosis in this type of growths.

ABSTRACT

A large variety of process can cause necrosis of the bony external ear canal, found by means otoscopic examination. Two cases with a final diagnosis or external ear canal cholesteatoma are reported. A revision of the main characteristics of this uncommon entity is performed, with a special emphasis to avoid that the scarcity of clinic symptoms favour its growing in depth.
