ABSTRACT

Ultrastructural initial changes study of convoluted proximal tubule after single dose of 154.8 mC/kg (600R), X-ray whole body radiation was performed in 12 C57BL mice. Twenty-four hours later, mitochondria evidenced proeminent changes such as cristolyses, dilatation and vacuolization. Within 72 hours, heterochromatin nuclei increased and vanished 144 hours after X-ray exposure. Such findings suggest that recovery probably happened because convoluted proximal tubules take place, regeneration occurs in a slow rate.

ABSTRACT

We studied the ultrastructure of the jejunal epithelium of six children suffering from acute episodes of gastroenteritis. Ultrastructural alterations of the jejunal mucosa occurred in practically all of the fragments analyzed, although the intensity of the abnormalities observed varied considerably. In most of the patients the alterations were confined to the microvilli, which appeared shortened and tufted in comparison with controls. These ultrastructural alterations are nonspecific and may represent a general response of the intestinal mucosa against different noxious agents. Severe alteration of the epithelial cells was observed in only one patient. In this case the cytoplasm contained multiple vacuoles that may correspond to dilated endoplasmic reticulum. It is hypothesized that the small intestinal lesions observed in these patients may allow penetration of food antigens, resulting in the appearance of food intolerance frequently described in children suffering from acute diarrhea.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

In both Wistar rats and C-57 BL mice, the thickness of the glomerular basement membrane increases progressively with age. This change, which can be measured in cohorts of manageable size, produces a measurement of biological age--if one accepts the assumption that it correlates with the viability of the organism that exhibit it. Whole-body exposure to x-rays has no observable influence on this age-related change.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

The authors have studied the ultrastructure of the lung in dogs following experimental hemorrhagic shock. They found intra-alveolar edema, red cells in the alveolar sac, disappearance of the substance of the lamellated osmiophilic bodies and cellular degeneration. Correlation among these alterations and increase of capillary permeability as well as consumption of surfactant secretion were established.
