ABSTRACT

Resumen OBJETIVO: Describir las características sociodemográficas, clínicas y patológicas y los resultados obtenidos con la técnica de ganglio centinela con azul patente en la cirugía de cáncer de mama temprano. Además, reportar la experiencia en la identificación del ganglio centinela en cáncer de mama temprano con la técnica con azul patente al 2.5%. MATERIALES Y MÉTODOS: Estudio retrospectivo y analítico consistente en la evaluación de los expedientes clínicos de pacientes diagnosticadas con cáncer de mama temprano, sin sospecha clínica o radiológica de afectación axilar, atendidas entre junio de 2022 y junio de 2023 en el servicio de Ginecología Oncológica de la UMAE Hospital de Ginecoobstetricia, Centro Médico Nacional de Occidente del IMSS. El sitio de inyección del colorante fue subdérmico periareolar, los ganglios identificados se estudiaron en el transoperatorio. Se analizaron el porcentaje de identificación, las tasas de falsos negativos y el valor predictivo negativo del método. RESULTADOS: Se analizaron 95 procedimientos de biopsia de ganglio centinela. Solo se practicó la linfadenectomía axilar en las pacientes con metástasis en el ganglio centinela comprobada en el estudio transoperatorio y en las que no se identificaron ganglios teñidos por no migración del colorante. La edad promedio de las pacientes fue de 57.1 años límites 25 y 78 años. El tamaño del tumor fue menor a 3 cm. A 64 67% pacientes se les hizo la mastectomía en comparación con 31 a quienes se efectuó cirugía conservadora de mama 33%. Se estadificaron como IA 57 de las 95 pacientes; el subtipo molecular más frecuente fue compatible con luminal A en 49%. CONCLUSIONES: La biopsia del ganglio centinela, con azul patente, es una técnica rápida, sencilla, precisa y de bajo costo para identificar daño axilar en etapas tempranas del cáncer de mama. Lo aquí reportado son resultados que corresponden a una primera evaluación de la técnica en nuestro servicio.


Abstract OBJECTIVE: To describe the sociodemographic, clinical and pathological characteristics and results of the patent blue sentinel lymph node technique in early breast cancer surgery. And to report the experience in identifying the sentinel lymph node in early breast cancer using the 2.5% patent blue technique. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective and analytical study consisting of the evaluation of the clinical records of patients diagnosed with early breast cancer, without clinical or radiological suspicion of axillary involvement, seen between June 2022 and June 2023 at the Oncological Gynaecology Service of the UMAE Hospital de Ginecoobstetricia, Centro Médico Nacional de Occidente of the IMSS. The dye injection site was subdermal periareolar, and the identified lumps were examined in the transoperative period. The percentage of identification, false negative rates and negative predictive value of the method were analysed. RESULTS: Ninety-five sentinel node biopsies were analysed. Axillary lymphadenectomy was performed only in patients with sentinel lymph node metastasis confirmed at surgery and in those in whom no stained nodes were identified due to non-migration of the dye. The mean age of the patients was 57.1 years range 25 to 78 years. The tumour size was less than 3 cm. Sixty-four patients 67% underwent mastectomy, compared with 31 who underwent breast-conserving surgery 33%. Fifty-seven of the 95 patients were staged as AI; the most common molecular subtype was compatible with luminal A in 49%. CONCLUSIONS: Sentinel lymph node biopsy with patent blue is a rapid, simple, accurate and inexpensive technique for identifying axillary disease in early breast cancer. The results reported here represent an initial evaluation of the technique in our service.

ABSTRACT

Landfill leachate (LFL) has a complex inorganic, organic and microbiological composition. Although pressure-driven membrane technology contributes to reaching the discharge limits, the need for frequent membrane replacement (typically every 1-3 years) is an economical and environmental limitation. The goal of this work is to evaluate the feasibility of using second-hand reverse osmosis (RO) membranes to treat LFL in an industrially relevant environment. End-of-life RO membranes discarded from a seawater desalination plant were first tested with brackish water and directly reused or regenerated to fit with requirements for LFL treatment. A laboratory scale test of second-hand membrane reuse was carried out using ultrafiltered LFL. Then, a long-term test in an LFL full-scale facility was performed, where half of the membranes of the facility were replaced. The industrial plant was operated for 27 months with second-hand membranes. The permeate water quality fit the required standards and the process showed a trend of lower energy requirement (up to 12 bar lower transmembrane pressure and up to 9% higher recovery than the average of the previous 4 years). Direct reuse and membrane regeneration were successfully proven to be an alternative management to landfill disposal, boosting membranes towards the circular economy.

ABSTRACT

The direct end-of-life recycling of reverse osmosis membranes (RO) into recycled nanofiltration (r-NF) membranes has been pointed out as a circular technology. For the first time, an environmental analysis of the whole life cycle of r-NF membranes was performed, focused on their usage. The carbon footprint (CF) of NF water treatment processes (Functional Unit: 1 m3 of treated water) with different pressure vessel (PV) designs and energy sources using r-NF and commercial NF-270-400 was quantified. Moreover, to compensate for the lower permeability of the r-NF, two design strategies were assessed: A) an increment in inlet pressure, and B) an increase in the number of modules. The inventory included energy modelling for each design and membrane. The interaction of both strategies with the permeability and service life of r-NF, together with different energy sources, was assessed using a novel hybrid analytical-numerical method. The relevance of energy use at the usage stage was highlighted. Therefore, r-NF permeability is the foremost relevant parameter for the definition of CF. The low impact of the r-NF replacement favoured strategy B. The use of an environmental indicator (CF) made it possible to identify the frontiers of the recyclability and applicability of r-NF membranes.

BACKGROUND: Aedes albopictus is a very invasive mosquito, which has recently colonized tropical and temperate regions worldwide. Of concern is its role in the spread of emerging or re-emerging mosquito-borne diseases. Ae. albopictus from south-western Europe and Brazil were studied to infer genetic and phenetic diversity at intra-individual, intra-population and inter-population levels, and to analyse its spread. METHODS: Genotyping was made by rDNA 5.8S-ITS-2 and mtDNA cox1 sequencing to assess haplotype and nucleotide diversity, genetic distances and phylogenetic networks. Male and female phenotyping included combined landmark-and outlined-based geometric morphometrics of wing size and shape. RESULTS: Specimens from seven populations from Spain, France and Brazil provided 12 cox1 and 162 5.8S-ITS-2 haplotypes, with great genetic variability difference between both markers (0.9% vs 31.2%). Five cox1 haplotypes were shared with other countries, mainly Italy, USA and China, but none was shared between Europe and Brazil. The 5.8S-ITS-2 showed 2-7 intra-individual (mean 4.7) and 16-34 intra-/inter-population haplotypes (24.7), including haplotypes shared between Spain, France and Brazil. A 4.3% of ITS-2 haplotypes were shared, mainly with Italy, USA and Thailand, evidencing worldwide spread and introductions from areas where recent outbreaks of Ae. albopictus-transmitted pathogens occurred. Wing size showed sex differences. Wing shape distinguished between Brazilian and European specimens. Both genetic and morphometric markers showed differences between insular Spain and continental Spain, France and Brazil. CONCLUSIONS: ITS-2 proves to be a useful marker to assess Ae. albopictus spread, providing pronouncedly more information than cox1, including intra-individual, intra-population and inter-population levels, furnishing a complete overview of the evolutionary exchanges followed by this mosquito. Wing morphometry proves to be a useful phenotyping marker, allowing to distinguish different populations at the level of both male and female specimens. Results indicate the need for periodic surveillance monitorings to verify that no Ae. albopictus with high virus transmission capacity is introduced into Europe.

ABSTRACT

Ultra-low pressure gravity-driven membrane (GDM) systems have the potential to be significantly less costly and complex than conventional membranes for water treatment applications. To build upon this inherent advantage, this study assesses the reuse of recycled membranes in GDM systems for producing drinking water. Two reverse osmosis spiral-wound modules were recycled into nanofiltration (NF)-like and ultrafiltration (UF)-like membranes via controlled exposure to free chlorine. To operate the recycled membranes, two housing devices, based on a simple fitting and an advanced end-caps design, were developed. The recycled membrane systems were tested under a range of conditions (submerged vs. external system configuration and continuous vs. intermittent filtration mode). Synthetic river water feed solutions were used in the tests where performance, fouling, and clogging were measured. NF-like recycled membranes resulted in poor salt rejection and low permeability (~1.7 L m-2 h-1 bar-1), but also in high rejection (>81%) of dissolved organic carbon. UF-like recycled membranes maintained their capacity to reject biopolymers (BP) (>74%) and featured up to 18-fold higher permeate rate than NF-like recycled membranes. The optimized operating conditions were found when the recycled membranes were housed in the end-caps device and operated intermittently (relaxation time plus forward flushing). Flushing reduced the fouling accumulation inside the membrane (only 12% and 40% of BP accumulation was observed in the NF-like and UF-like, respectively). However, the end-caps-based device was estimated to be more expensive during the economic analysis. To address this techno-economic trade-off, a decision-making tree was developed to select the appropriate configuration based upon the implementation context. Overall, this study concludes that these designs can serve as robust, low-cost (water production cost <1 USD ct. yr. L-1), and light-weight GDM alternatives. This study is beneficial for developing compact GDM systems based on recycled spiral-wound membranes for both rural areas and emergency response.

This data includes the geographical data, the Life Cycle Inventory data and Life Cycle Assessment data of the implementation of end-of-life (EoL) reverse osmosis (RO) direct recycling implementation at full scale in a Spanish region. Besides, the data allows the comparison of the environmental profile between recycled membrane products with the commercial counterparts. The EoL-RO stock potential was analysed constrained to the Segura´s watershed. However, the distribution of recycled membranes was considered within the European Union´s borders. The International Life Cycle Data system (ILCD) midpoint impact categories and the indicator Service Life Ratio (SLR) are presented. BACKGROUND: We identified the species of Leishmania isolated from traveling and migrant patients attended in a reference center from 2000 to 2015, we performed the georeferencing of these species in Rio de Janeiro (RJ) state and we had knowledge about the human flows between the likely location of infection (LLI) and place of residence (PR) in RJ state, Brazil. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: This is a retrospective cross-sectional study including 171 patients diagnosed with ATL. Google Maps, OpenStreetMap, and Bing Maps were tools used to georeference LLI and PR. For etiological identification, we used isoenzyme electrophoresis, polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (molecular target hsp70C with restriction enzymes HaeIII and BstUI), and sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer of ribosomal DNA. ARCGIS software was used to create maps of the geographic distribution of Leishmania species in the state and municipality of RJ, together with flows between the LLI and PR. Isolates from 104 patients were identified as: L. (Viannia) braziliensis (80.8%), L. (V.) naiffi (7.7%), L. (V.) guyanensis (6.7%), L. (Leishmania) amazonensis (1%), and genetic variants of L. (V.) braziliensis (3.8%). The flow maps showed that the LLI included 4 countries, 19 Brazilian states, and 18 municipalities of RJ state. The Brazilian states with the highest density of cases were Amazonas (n = 32), Bahia (n = 18), and Ceará (n = 15). CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: This work is the first contribution to the knowledge of the routes of Leishmania species introduced in RJ state by migrants and travelers patients. L. (V.) braziliensis, L. (V.) guyanensis, L. (V.) naiffi, L. (L.) amazonensis, and genetic variants of L. (V.) braziliensis were identified in RJ state. To determine whether the autochthonous transmission of these imported species is possible it is necessary the adaptation of these species to environmental conditions as well as the presence of reservoirs and phlebotomine vectors in this region.

INTRODUCTION: Favorable responses in American tegumentary leishmaniasis (ATL) patients to treatment with 5 mg Sbv/kg/day meglumine antimoniate (MA) has been reported in Rio de Janeiro, but little is known regarding the therapeutic response to low doses in patients from other locations. METHODS: A retrospective review of medical records was conducted to compare the therapeutic response to 5 mg Sbv/kg/day MA treatment among 36 patients who acquired ATL in Brazilian states other than Rio de Janeiro (OS group) and 72 patients from Rio de Janeiro (RJ group). RESULTS: One course of 5 mg Sbv/kg/day MA cured 72.8% of 81 cutaneous (CL) and 66.6% of 27 mucosal (ML) leishmaniasis-infected patients: 70% in the CL/RJ group, 81% in the CL/OS group, 50% in the ML/RJ group, and 80% in the ML/OS group. After up to two additional treatment courses at the same dose, 88.9% and 85.2% of the CL and ML patients were cured, respectively. Adverse events were observed in 40% of patients in the CL/RJ group, 57% of the CL/OS group, 58% of the ML/RJ group, and 80% of the ML/OS group. No significant differences were observed in the cure rates or adverse effects between the RJ and OS groups. No patients required permanent discontinuation of treatment due to adverse events. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with ATL acquired in both RJ and OS may respond to low-dose MA. While high-dose MA should remain the standard treatment for ATL, low-dose MA might be preferred when toxicity is a primary concern.

ABSTRACT

O presente texto pretende refletir sobre o dispositivo do Centro de Convivência como uma ferramenta de empoderamento, de auxílio na construção de maior autonomia e promoção da cidadania da pessoa em sofrimento mental. Procura-se pensar a contribuição desse serviço para a efetivação da dimensão sociocultural da Reforma Psiquiátrica brasileira, auxiliando na inserção social do louco, a partir do fomento de atividades laborativas e artísticas e da articulação com diversos setores da sociedade. Assim, por meio da revisão de literatura de legislações sobre o tema, artigos científicos e textos de Conferências e Fóruns da Saúde Mental, busca-se analisar os desafios postos a esse serviço da Rede de Atenção Psicossocial frente a discursos e práticas homogeneizantes em nossa sociedade. Desse modo, verifica-se que, mesmo após grandes avanços da luta antimanicomial para a sensibilização da sociedade sobre a loucura, ainda persiste um imaginário social intolerante à diferença, ao louco. The present article intends to reflect how the health mechanism of the Center of Coexistence can be a tool of empowerment, of help in the construction of greater autonomy and promotion of citizenship of the people in mental suffering. It is sought to think about the contribution of this service to the effectiveness at the socio-cultural dimension of the Brazilian Psychiatric Reform, contributing to the social insertion of the people in mental suffering, through the promotion of work and artistic activities and the articulation with various sectors of society. Thus, through the literature review of scientific articles and texts of Mental Health Conferences and Forums we seek to analyze the challenges imposed to this service of Primary Health Care, which works as an open and community space, face to speeches and practices homogenizers in our society. In this way, it is verified that even after great advances of the antimanicomial fight for the awareness of the society on the madness, still persists a social imaginary which is intolerant to the difference, to the madman. ABSTRACT

Trypanosoma caninum is a parasite isolated from domestic dogs, of which several biological aspects remain unknown, including evolutive forms found in vertebrate hosts. The objective of this study was to evaluate co-cultures of T. caninum with different cell lines as feeder layers to monitor the differentiation process and investigate infective potential. The study was performed using DH-82, MDCK, and Lulo cell lines. T. caninum from axenic culture was added to the cultured adherent cells. At intervals over 30 days, aliquots of the supernatant were collected for quantification and assessment of differentiation. Infectivity assays were performed on the aforementioned cell lines seeded on glass coverslips and evaluated after 6, 24, and 72 h. In the supernatant of the feeder layer, T. caninum presented similar growth profiles, with epimastigote and trypomastigote forms in binary and multiple divisions. During co-culture with DH-82 and MDCK cells, a higher level of differentiation to trypomastigotes was observed. This study shows that the differentiation process of this parasite can vary according to culture conditions and that DH-82 and MDCK lineages could be applied to the study of trypomastigote forms. All forms of T. caninum described until now (aflagellar epimastigotes, typical epimastigotes, or trypomastigotes) were unable to infect the cell line Finally, this study provides additional data about morphobiological aspects. Although the biological cycle of T. caninum has not been established, the present data suggest the importance of feeder layers in promoting the growth and differentiation of this new parasite.

ABSTRACT

Leishmania amazonensis is a major etiological agent of human cutaneous leishmaniasis in the Americas; nevertheless there are some reports of this species causing visceral disease in dogs and men. In the present work we have studied a Leishmania strain isolated from a human case of visceral leishmaniasis. We have infected different mouse strains and analyzed the development of the disease, studying the parasite's ability to visceralize and whether this ability is influenced by host genetics. Female BALB/c, C57BL/6, C57BL/10, CBA, DBA/2, and C3H/He mice were subcutaneously infected with 104 L. amazonensis amastigotes. BALB/c, C57BL/6 and C57BL/10 mice were found to be very susceptible to infection, showing lesions that developed to necrosis and ulceration. CBA mice developed a late but severe lesion. DBA/2 mice developed only discrete lesions, while C3H/He mice did not develop any lesions. All mouse strains except C3H/He showed some degree of visceralization, presenting parasites in the spleen, while BALB/c, C57BL/6 and CBA presented parasites also in the liver. Moreover, most of the strains presented high parasite load at the infection site, whereas DBA and C3H/He mice showed low or no parasite load 90 days after infection, respectively. Histopathology corroborates the results, showing that susceptible mice presented an inflammatory reaction with parasites in the skin, lymph nodes and spleen, while strains that are more resistant presented low parasitism and discrete inflammatory reaction. Results indicate that this isolate is extremely virulent, can easily visceralize and that the pathogenesis of leishmaniasis is, at least in part, related to the genetic background of the host.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Forty-four strains isolated from a cohort of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) patients who did or did not respond to one course of treatment with meglumine antimoniate were investigated to explore genetic polymorphisms in parasite kinetoplast DNA minicircles. Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis strains isolated from responder (R) and non-responder (NR) patients who acquired infection in Rio de Janeiro or in other Brazilian states were studied using low-stringency single-specific primer polymerase chain reaction (LSSP-PCR) to identify genetic polymorphisms. RESULTS: Polymorphisms were observed in parasites recovered from patient lesions. No association was found between a specific genotype and R or NR patients. Phenetic analysis grouped the genotypes into three main clusters, with similarity indices varying from 0.72 to 1.00. Although no specific genotype association was detected, at least one group of L. (V.) braziliensis genotypes that circulates in Rio de Janeiro was discriminated in clusters I and III, showing phenotypes of good and poor responses to treatment, respectively. Cluster I comprised parasite profiles recovered from R patients from Rio de Janeiro and in cluster III, NR samples were prevalent. Cluster II comprised 24 isolates, with 21 from Rio de Janeiro and three from other states, equally distributed between R and NR patients. Additionally, we found that parasites sharing all common genetic characteristics acted differently in response to treatment. CONCLUSIONS: These results are of clinical-epidemiological importance since they demonstrate that populations of L. (V.) braziliensis that exhibit high levels of genetic similarity also display different phenotypes associated with meglumine antimoniate responses in cutaneous leishmaniasis patients.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The purpose of the present study was to identify sociodemographic and psychological variables related to self-care and quality of life in Mexican adults with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. A cross-sectional design was used in a sample of 60 people (93% women) aged between 36 and 66 years ( M = 54.3, SD = 4.71) attached to the public health system in San Luis Potosí, Mexico. Self-care, self-efficacy, knowledge about diabetes, anxiety, depression and quality of life were measured using the EECAC, EAG, DKQ-24, AMAS, BDI-II and SF-36 scales. For data processing, a linear regression analysis was used to evaluate the impact of the measured variables on self-care and quality of life. In general, the model explained 33.9% of the variance of self-care through the variables depression (β = -.27) and self-efficacy (β = .74). The 56% variance in quality of life related to physical health was explained by the variables depression (ß = -34) and self-care ( β = .34). In their mental health component, 43.4% of variance in quality of life was explained through anxiety (β = -.26) and depression ( β = -.40). Finally, the positive perception of self-efficacy and health status free from anxiety and depression were determinant factors for self-care and health-related quality of life.


Resumo O propósito deste trabalho foi identificar as variáveis sociodemográficas e psicológicas relacionadas com o autocuidado e a qualidade de vida em adultos mexicanos com diabetes mellitus tipo 2. Utilizou-se um desenho transversal numa amostra de 60 pessoas (93 % mulheres) entre 36 e 66 anos (M = 54.3, DP = 4.71), vinculadas ao sistema de saúde pública em San Luis Potosí, México. Foram medidas as variáveis de autocuidado, autoeficácia, conhecimento em diabetes, ansiedade, depressão e qualidade de vida com a aplicação das escalas EECAC, EAG, DKQ-24, AMAS, BDI-II e SF-36. Na análise de resultados, utilizou-se a análise de regressão linear para avaliar o impacto das variáveis medidas sobre o autocuidado e a qualidade de vida. Em geral, o modelo explicou 33.9 % da variação do autocuidado por meio das variáveis depressão (β = -.27) e autoeficácia (β = .74). 56 % de variação em qualidade de vida relacionada com a saúde física foram explicadas a partir das variáveis depressão (β = -.34) e autocuidado (β = .34). Em seu componente de saúde mental, 43.4 % da variação em qualidade de vida foram explicadas por meio da ansiedade (β = -.26) e da depressão (β = -.40). Finalmente, a percepção positiva de autoeficácia e o estado de saúde livre de ansiedade e depressão foram fatores determinantes para o autocuidado e a qualidade de vida relacionada com a saúde.

ABSTRACT

This work presents a new method for forward variable selection and calibration and its evaluation for manganese determination in steel by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). A compact and low-cost LIBS instrument was used, based on a microchip laser and a grating mini-spectrometer containing a non-intensified, non-gated, and non-cooled linear sensor array. Sixty steel samples were analyzed, with known manganese concentrations from 0.106 to 1.696 wt%. The spectra (1757 variables between 200 and 850 nm) were acquired under the continuous application of laser pulses at 100 Hz and using 80, 400, and 1000 ms integration times. The new method generated a mathematic combination of the selected variables and the results were calibrated against the manganese content by linear or quadratic regression. The best results were obtained using the spectra from all integration times together, with 31 selected variables and root mean square errors of cross-validation and prediction of 0.015 and 0.033, respectively. Compared to Jack-knife partial least squares regression, the new method presented lower prediction errors and numbers of selected variables, with the advantages of no data pretreatment and a simpler mathematic calculation. ABSTRACT

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic autoimmune disease in whose etiology genetic factors are known to play an important role. Among the genes associated with RA, STAT4 could be an important factor in conducting helper T cells toward the pro-inflammatory Th1 and Th17 lineages. The aim of this study is to determine the association of the STAT4 polymorphism rs7574865 with RA, disease activity, and anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide (CCP) antibody levels in a Mexican population. Genotyping was carried out using the Taqman® system from Applied Biosystems in 140 patients with RA and 150 healthy subjects. Disease activity was evaluated by a rheumatologist using the DAS28 and Spanish-HAQ-DI instruments. Anti-CCP levels were determined by ELISA. Associations of the genotypes of rs7574865 with DAS28, HAQ, and anti-CCP antibody levels with RA were determined. Findings showed that the GT and TT genotypes and the T allele from rs7574865 were all associated as risk factors for RA, independently of their anti-CCP status. An association with moderate-to-high disease activity (DAS28 ≥ 3.2) was also found. Additionally, patients with the GT or TT genotypes showed lower HAQ values than those who carried the GG genotype. No differences in anti-CCP antibody levels or DAS28 and genotypes were found. This work supports the association of the STAT4 rs7574865 polymorphism with RA and disease activity, but not with anti-CCP antibody levels in a Mexican population.

ABSTRACT

Tegumentary leishmaniasis (TL) is a zoonotic disease that affects humans and domestic dogs. In Brazil, TL is considered endemic, and Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis is the prevalent species causing this disease. There is debate about the role of dogs (Canis familiaris) as domestic reservoirs in the transmission cycle of TL. To date, classical parasitological techniques, including parasite isolation in culture media, have been able to detect parasites only from cutaneous lesions. In this study, we detected L. (V.) braziliensis DNA in intact skin fragments collected from 3 naturally infected dogs from the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with the use of PCR techniques associated with molecular hybridization. The detection of parasitic DNA in this anatomical site is an important finding vis-à-vis the importance of the domestic dogs in endemic areas of TL.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: During a diagnostic evaluation of canine visceral leishmaniasis (VL), two of seventeen dogs were found to be co-infected by Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis and Leishmania (Leishmania) chagasi. METHODS: Specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and restriction fragment length polymorphism-PCR (RFLP-PCR) assays were performed. RESULTS: PCR assays for Leishmania subgenus identification followed by RFLP-PCR analysis in biopsies from cutaneous lesions and the spleen confirmed the presence of Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis and Leishmania (Leishmania) chagasi in those fragments. CONCLUSIONS: This report reinforces the importance of using serological and molecular techniques in the epidemiological surveillance of canine populations in endemic areas in which both diseases are known to co-exist. In such cases, a reassessment of the control measures is required.
