ABSTRACT

Acoustic imaging can be performed using a spherical microphone array (SMA) and conventional beamforming (CBF) or spherical harmonic beamforming (SHB). At low frequencies, the mainlobe width depends on the SMA radius for CBF and on the order of the spherical harmonics expansion for SHB, which is related to the number of microphones. In this letter, Kriging is used to virtually increase the SMA radius and/or the number of microphones. Numerical and experimental investigations show the effectiveness of Kriging to reduce the mainlobe width and thus improve the acoustic images obtained with a SMA and CBF or SHB.

ABSTRACT

Developing innovative noise policies that build on international best practices is difficult when policies around the world differ along many dimensions, ranging from different sources covered to different levels of governance involved. This is particularly critical in the context of road traffic, identified as one of the main culprits leading to noise-associated complaints and health issues. In this article, we document the wide range of specifications observed in road traffic policies and propose a methodology to compare noise limits across noise policies. First, we present the responsibilities of administrative governments according to the scope (e.g., emission vs. exposure). Second, we compare noise limits by scope and geographic areas by separating acoustic indicators (overall and event indicators). Third, we convert overall outdoor noise limits into a common basis using the method described by Brink and his associates (2018) and compare them with the World Health Organization (WHO)'s recommendations (2018). Finally, measurement protocols are also compared across outdoor noise policies. This paper shows that road noise is managed at several administrative levels using approaches that are either centralized or decentralized. We also observed disparities in the associated noise limits across geographic areas. The converted outdoor noise limits generally exceeded the WHO's recommendations (2018). Finally, this paper outlines how outdoor measurement protocols vary across geographic areas. However, similarities were identified between state and provincial noise policies within the same country.

ABSTRACT

The generalized cross correlation (GCC) is an efficient technique for performing acoustic imaging. However, it suffers from important limitations such as a large main lobe width for noise sources with low frequency content or a high amplitude of side lobes for noise sources with high frequencies. Prefiltering operation of the microphone signals by a weighting function can be used to improve the acoustic image. In this work, two weighting functions based on PHAse Transform (PHAT) improvements are used. The first adds an exponent to the PHAT expression (ρ-PHAT), while the second adds the minimum value of the coherence function to the denominator (ρ-PHAT-C). Numerical acoustic images obtained with the GCC and those weighting functions are compared and quantitatively assessed thanks to a metric based on a covariance ellipse, which surrounds either the main lobe or the side lobes. The weighting function ρ-PHAT-C provides the smallest surface ellipses especially when the arithmetic of the GCC is replaced by the geometric mean (GEO). Experimental measurements are carried out in a hemi-anechoic room and a reverberant chamber where two loudspeakers were set in front of microphone array. The acoustic images obtained confirm that the ρ-PHAT-C with the GEO outperforms the GCC, GCC-PHAT, and GCC ρ-PHAT.

ABSTRACT

Microphone arrays are an efficient tool for localizing acoustic sources. Time domain beamforming is one of the techniques which can be used to build a sound source map. This technique based on the cross-correlation of the microphone signals can be seen as a broadband beamforming method. The spatial likelihood functions are averaged with the arithmetic mean. Recently, it has been shown that the harmonic and geometric means can improve the quality of the sound source map. In this study, the influence of the exponent value of the generalized mean on the sound source map is investigated. Then it is shown that the proposed technique is less sensitive to the number of microphones and therefore, it can be reduced.

ABSTRACT

Snowmobile manufacturers invest important efforts to reduce the noise emission of their products. The noise sources of snowmobiles are multiple and closely spaced, leading to difficult source separation in practice. In this study, source imaging results for snowmobile pass-by noise are discussed. The experiments involve a 193-microphone Underbrink array, with synchronization of acoustic with video data provided by a high-speed camera. Both conventional beamforming and Clean-SC deconvolution are implemented to provide noise source maps of the snowmobile. The results clearly reveal noise emission from the engine, exhaust, and track depending on the frequency range considered.

ABSTRACT

The acoustic signature of a controlled-diffusion airfoil immersed in a flow is experimentally characterized. Acoustic measurements have been carried out in an anechoic open-jet-wind-tunnel for low Reynolds numbers (from 5 × 10(4) to 4.3 × 10(5)) and several angles of attack. As with the NACA0012, the acoustic spectrum is dominated by discrete tones. These tonal behaviors are divided into three different regimes. The first one is characterized by a dominant primary tone which is steady over time, surrounded by secondary peaks. The second consists of two unsteady primary tones associated with secondary peaks and the third consists of a hump dominated by several small peaks. A wavelet study allows one to identify an amplitude modulation of the acoustic signal mainly for the unsteady tonal regime. This amplitude modulation is equal to the frequency interval between two successive tones. Finally, a bispectral analysis explains the presence of tones at higher frequencies.

ABSTRACT

Microphone array techniques are an efficient tool to detect acoustic source positions. The delay and sum beamforming is the standard method. In the time domain, the generalized cross-correlation can be used to compute the noise source map. This technique is based on the arithmetic mean of the spatial likelihood functions. In this study, the classical arithmetic mean is replaced by the more standard generalized mean. The noise source maps provide by the arithmetic, geometric and harmonic means are compared in the case of numerical and experimental data obtained in a reverberant room. The geometric and harmonic means provide the best noise source maps with no side lobes and a better source level estimation.

Microphone arrays and beamforming have become a standard method to localize aeroacoustic sources. Deconvolution techniques have been developed to improve spatial resolution of beamforming maps. The deconvolution approach for the mapping of acoustic sources (DAMAS) is a standard deconvolution technique, which has been enhanced via a sparsity approach called sparsity constrained deconvolution approach for the mapping of acoustic sources (SC-DAMAS). In this paper, the DAMAS inverse problem is solved using the orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) and compared with beamforming and SC-DAMAS. The resulting noise source maps show that OMP-DAMAS is an efficient source localization technique in the case of uncorrelated or correlated acoustic sources. Moreover, the computation time is clearly reduced as compared to SC-DAMAS.

ABSTRACT

The possibility of using the time-reversal technique to localize acoustic sources in a wind-tunnel flow is investigated. While the technique is widespread, it has scarcely been used in aeroacoustics up to now. The proposed method consists of two steps: in a first experimental step, the acoustic pressure fluctuations are recorded over a linear array of microphones; in a second numerical step, the experimental data are time-reversed and used as input data for a numerical code solving the linearized Euler equations. The simulation achieves the back-propagation of the waves from the array to the source and takes into account the effect of the mean flow on sound propagation. The ability of the method to localize a sound source in a typical wind-tunnel flow is first demonstrated using simulated data. A generic experiment is then set up in an anechoic wind tunnel to validate the proposed method with a flow at Mach number 0.11. Monopolar sources are first considered that are either monochromatic or have a narrow or wide-band frequency content. The source position estimation is well-achieved with an error inferior to the wavelength. An application to a dipolar sound source shows that this type of source is also very satisfactorily characterized.
