ABSTRACT

Whole-body counters (WBC) are used in internal dosimetry forin vivomonitoring in radiation protection. The calibration processes of a WBC set-up include the measurement of a physical phantom filled with a certificate radioactive source that usually is referred to a standard set of individuals determined by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP). The aim of this study was to develop an anthropomorphic and anthropometric female physical phantom for the calibration of the WBC systems. The reference female computational phantom of the ICRP, now called RFPID (Reference Female Phantom for Internal Dosimetry) was printed using PLA filament and with an empty interior. The goal is to use the RFPID to reduce the uncertainties associated within vivomonitoring system. The images which generated the phantom were manipulated using ImageJ®, Amide®, GIMP®and the 3D Slicer®software. RFPID was split into several parts and printed using a 3D printer in order to print the whole-body phantom. The newly printed physical phantom RFPID was successfully fabricated, and it is suitable to mimic human tissue, anatomically similar to a human body i.e., size, shape, material composition, and density.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this work is to study the radiation doses delivered to a group of patients that underwent a stereotactic breast biopsy (SBB) procedure. Mean glandular doses (MGD) were estimated from the air-kerma measured at the breast surface entrance multiplying by specific conversion coefficients (DgN) that were estimated using Monte Carlo simulations. DgN were calculated for the 0° and ±15° projections used in SBB and for the particular beam quality. Data on 61 patients were collected showing that a typical SBB procedure is composed by ten images. MGD was on average (4 ± 2) mGy with (0.38 ± 0.06) mGy per image. The use of specific conversion coefficients instead of typical DgN for mammography/tomosynthesis yields to obtain MGD values for SBB that are around a 65% lower on average.

ABSTRACT

Solid-state cooling based on i-caloric effects has shown to be a promising alternative to the conventional refrigeration devices. Only very recently, the research on barocaloric materials is receiving a deal of attention due to the demonstration of giant barocaloric effects in shape-memory alloys. Regarding polymers, there is still a lack of literature, despite their high caloric potential. Thus, we present here giant barocaloric effects in natural rubber, a low-cost and environmental friendly elastomer polymer. The maximum values of entropy and temperature changes are larger than those previously reported for any promising barocaloric material. Moreover, the huge normalized temperature change and refrigerant capacity exhibited by natural rubber confirm its high potential for cooling applications. We also verify a relevant dependence of the barocaloric effect on the glass transition in natural rubber. Our findings suggest that commercial refrigeration devices based on barocaloric effects from elastomer polymers can be envisaged in the near future.

ABSTRACT

Androgens may directly modulate early ovarian follicular development in preantral stages and androgen excess before puberty may disrupt this physiological process. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the dynamics of follicular morphology and circulating androgen and estradiol levels in prepubertal Wistar rats acutely exposed to androgens. Prepubertal female Wistar rats were distributed into three groups: control, equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) intervention and eCG plus dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) intervention (eCG+DHEA). Serum DHEA, testosterone and estradiol levels were determined, and ovarian morphology and morphometry were assessed. The eCG+DHEA group presented increased serum estradiol and testosterone levels as compared with the control group (P<0.01), and higher serum DHEA concentration v. the eCG-only and control groups (P<0.01). In addition, the eCG+DHEA group had a higher number of, and larger-sized, primary and secondary follicles as compared with the control group (P<0.05). The eCG group presented intermediate values for number and size of primary and secondary follicles, without significant differences as compared with the other two groups. The number of antral follicles was higher in the eCG+DHEA and eCG groups v. controls (P<0.05). The number of primordial, atretic and cystic follicles were similar in all groups. In conclusion, the present experimental model using an acute eCG+DHEA intervention was useful to investigate events involved in initial follicular development under hyperandrogenic conditions, and could provide a reliable tool to study defective follicular development with possible deleterious reproductive consequences later in life.

ABSTRACT

Serotonin (5-HT) has been shown to participate in prolactin secretion through a complex process resulting in both positive and negative effects. Estrogen has also been recognized as being involved in this serotonergic effect on prolactin release. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to assess whether estradiol modulates serotonergic involvement in prolactin secretion though 5-HT1A and/or 5-HT2A/2C receptors. Ovariectomized female Wistar rats, treated for 2 weeks with estrogen to induce a hyperprolactinemic status (hyperestrogenic rats) or with sunflower oil vehicle (hypoestrogenic rats), were injected daily with normal saline solution or 6-chloro-2-(1-piperazinyl)pyrazine (MK-212), an 5-HT2A/2C receptor agonist, for 4 days. Other groups of ovariectomized animals received 8-hydroxy-2-(di-N-propylamino)tetralin (8-OH-DPAT) or pindolol, an agonist and antagonist of the 5-HT1A receptor respectively, on the last day of treatment with estrogen or vehicle. Prolactin levels were compared among groups in each experiment under the distinct drug treatments. MK-212 was found to increase prolactin concentrations both in hyper- and hypoestrogenic females compared to controls (p<0.05). In contrast, prolactin levels remained similar to those of controls both in hyperestrogenic animals treated with 8-OH-DPAT and pindolol and in hypoestrogenic rats administered the same treatments. In conclusion, our findings indicate the involvement of 5-HT2A/2C receptors on prolactin release through serotonergic pathways in female animals, especially in hyperestrogenic states.

ABSTRACT

We studied the layered, hexagonal, semi-metal CaAl(2)Si(2) by magnetization, specific heat and resistivity measurements over a wide range of temperature, pressure and magnetic field. Both the Sommerfeld coefficient (γ = 1 mJ mol(-1) K(-2)) and the Debye temperature (θ(D) = 288 K) are in agreement with the values obtained from the band structure calculation. The resistivity shows a metallic character up to 200 K, followed by saturation and, afterwards, a weak decrease up to 840 K, at which it sharply rises reaching a local maximum at 847 ± 5 K. While the low-temperature thermal evolution was accounted for in terms of intrinsic and extrinsic effects, the additional high-temperature scattering was attributed, based on differential thermal analysis, to a first-order thermal event. No appreciable magnetoresistivity was observed at liquid helium temperatures even for fields up to 90 kOe, indicating an absence of coupling between the electronic and magnetic degrees of freedom. Finally, an externally applied pressure was found to induce a strong reduction in the resistivity following a second-order polynomial: this effect will be discussed in terms of the influence of pressure on the effective mobility and concentration of charge carriers.

ABSTRACT

Crassostrea rhizophorae (Guilding, 1828) es una de las especies de ostras tropicales cultivadas en la costa brasilera, que presenta alto valor comercial, no existiendo información sobre las características gonadales, durante las fases reproductivas de esta especie. El objetivo de este trabajo fue analizar la morfología de los ovocitos y de los folículos gonadales de Crassostrea rhizophorae, en tres fases del ciclo gonadal. Analizando los cortes histológicos de las gónadas y considerando los ovocitos que presentaban núcleo y nucléolo evidentes, fueron determinadas tres fases del ciclo gonadal: gametogénesis inicial, crecimiento y maduración. En la fase de gametogénesis inicial, el diámetro de los folículos y de los ovocitos era de 180,29 (+ - 41,91) e 18,66 (+ - 6,85) µm, respectivamente; también identificamos gran cantidad de tejido conjuntivo interfolicular y un número mayor de ovocitos previtelogénicos. En la fase de crecimiento, el diámetro de los folículos y de los ovocitos era de 218,02 (+ - 43,19) y 25,92 (+ - 9,94) µm, respectivamente. Este fase fue caracterizada por una pequeña cantidad de tejido conjuntivo interfolicular y predominio de ovocitos vitelogénicos. En la fase de maduración, el diámetro de los folículos y de los ovocitos era de 298,16 ( + - 99,24) y 35,27 (+ - 6,2) µm, respectivamente, existiendo gran número de ovocitos maduros. De esta manera, concluimos que durante la implantación del cultivo, Crassostrea rhizophorae tolera la influencia de los factores intrínsecos y extrínsecos y no presenta alteraciones significativas en su actividad reproductiva.


Crassostrea rhizophorae (Guilding, 1828) is one of the tropical species of oysters cultivated on the Brazilian shore. Despite its high commercial value, there is no information on the gonadal characteristics during the reproductive stages of this species. The objective of this work was to analyze the morphology and morphometry of Crassostrea rhizophorae oocytes and follicles in three stages of the gonadal cycle. Were analized histological sections of gonads considering that the oocytes presented visible nuclei and nucleoli, it was observed three gonadal cycle stages: early gametogenesis, growth and maturation. In the early gametogenesis stage, follicles and oocytes presented diameters of 180.29 (± 41.91) and 18.66 (± 6.85) µm, respectively, and presence of large amount of connective tissue and previtellogenic oocyte. In the growth stage, follicles and oocytes presented diameters of 218.02 (± 43.19) and 25.92 (± 9.94) µm, respectively, this stage was characterized by a small amount of interfollicular connective tissue with vitellogenic oocyte predominate. In the maturation stage, follicles and oocytes presented diameters of 298.16 (± 99.24) and 35.27 (± 6.2) µm, respectively, and presence of large number of mature oocytes. We concluded that during culture Crassostrea rhizophorae tolerates the influence of intrinsic and extrinsic factors and does not undergo significant changes in reproductive activity.
