ABSTRACT

In order to age successfully at work, people need to maintain or improve their work ability and motivation to work. This implies a process that develops over time and can differ substantially between individuals. This study investigated whether different trajectories of perceived work ability and motivation to work can be distinguished between older employees over time and to what extent job demands and job resources are predictive of these different trajectories. We applied growth mixture modelling amongst 5799 employees of 45 years and older at four time points. We found five distinct groups of older workers that differed in their trajectories of perceived work ability and four types of groups of older workers that differed in their trajectories of their motivation to work. Higher levels of physical demands, mental demands, autonomy, supervisor support, and colleague support were less common in unfavourable trajectories. This study gives Human Resource Management practitioners insight into how jobs should be designed to stimulate successful ageing at work.

ABSTRACT

This paper provides a systematic review of the phenomenon of menopause at the workplace from a sustainable career perspective, by highlighting its major themes along with the evolution and tendencies observed in this field. A conceptual science mapping analysis based on co-word bibliographic networks was developed, using the SciMAT tool. From 1992 to 2020, 185 documents were retrieved from the Web of Science. In the first analyzed time span (1992-2002), postmenopausal women, health, and risk factors appeared to be the motor themes (well-developed and important for the structure of the discipline under focus), and disorder was an emerging or disappearing theme in the phenomenon under research. In the second studied period (2003-2013), risk and health were motor themes, menopausal symptoms was a basic or transversal theme (important for the discipline but not well-developed), coronary heart disease was a specialized theme (well-developed but less important for the structure of the research field), and postmenopausal women was an emerging or disappearing theme (both weakly developed and marginal to the field). In the third studied period (2014-2020), menopause, breast cancer, and menopausal symptoms were motor themes, Anxiety was a specialized theme and risk and body mass index were emerging or disappearing themes. Sustainability of women's careers in the second half of life is of increasing importance given the increasing equal representation of men and women in working organizations, and the impact of the changing nature of work in the 21st century on older workers.

ABSTRACT

Based on lifespan developmental psychology and psychosocial work characteristics theory, we examined longitudinal relations between calendar age, occupational time perspective, different types of job demands and job resources in relation to sustainable employability (i.e., work ability, vitality and employability) among healthcare workers in Netherlands (N = 1478). Results of our two-wave complete panel study revealed satisfactory fit indices for the metric invariance of the included variables across the two waves (6-month time lag). Our results revealed a negative relation between calendar age and external employability of healthcare workers (limited support for hypothesis 1), and more consistent evidence for positive relations between an open future time perspective and across-time changes in vitality, work ability and external employability (supporting hypothesis 2). Few significant findings were found for relations between specific job demands or job resources and indicators of sustainable employability of healthcare workers (mixed results hypotheses 3 and 4). Our explorative tests of possible moderating effects of age or occupational time perspective in predicting relations between psychosocial work characteristics and indicators of sustainable employability revealed only a significant interaction effect of supervisor support and future time perspective in explaining across-time changes in external employability of healthcare workers (rejecting hypothesis 5 and confirming hypothesis 6). We discuss the practical as well as theoretical implications of these findings, and present recommendations for future research.

ABSTRACT

Endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) improves bronchoscopic diagnosis of peripheral lung lesions (PLLs). The procedure time is lengthened by the search through multiple bronchial branches to PLLs. Virtual bronchoscopy (VB) provides endobronchial views that simulate findings at bronchoscopy. An open source software can be employed to study VB and hence the endobronchial route to a PLL. It allows VB to be studied in a Macintosh platform such as a laptop computer. Our purpose was to test if VB generated by this software could shorten procedure time of EBUS-guided bronchoscopy as compared with no VB assistance. The most feasible route to a PLL was manually selected using this software to study VB (VB group). For non-VB group, 2D CT axial +/- coronal images were reviewed to plan bronchoscopy. Before bronchoscopic biopsies, the location of PLL was confirmed by EBUS. Thirty-three subjects were recruited including 16 in VB group and 17 in non-VB group. The mean EBUS examination time and mean total procedure time were reduced in the VB group compared with non-VB group: 5.3 versus 10.5 minutes (P=0.04) and 22.4 versus 29.9 minutes (P=0.044), respectively. There was no complication in the VB group. Although the diagnostic yield was higher in the VB group than non-VB group, our study was not powered to test the difference. This pilot study suggests that VB assistance is safe and shortens procedural time of EBUS-guided bronchoscopy for PLL. Further study is warranted to confirm these findings.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to determine if there is an association between eye size and the volume of the orbit in adult subjects. Thirty-three subjects with varying degrees of ametropia (+1.00 to -12.75 D) underwent magnetic resonance scan of the orbit. Results show that the larger myopic eye was not associated with a larger orbit.
