ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Varicocele is one of the most common treatable causes of male infertility, and its treatment may be beneficial for fertility. This study aimed to evaluate fertility rate and DNA fragmentation index (DFI) following varicocelectomy in primary infertile men with clinical varicocele. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective longitudinal study was conducted on primary infertility men, in a tertiary center from December 2018 to December 2019 with one-year follow-up. Data of the semen parameters, DFI (%), and fertility rate were gathered before, as well as 4 and 12 months after undergoing varicocelectomy. For data analysis, SPSS software and analytical test were used. RESULTS: Out of 76 patients who were analyzed, 22 (29%) became fertile and 54 (71%) remained infertile. Semen parameters and DFI (%) were improved significantly following varicocelectomy (P<0.001). Smoking history, occupational heated exposure, body mass index (BMI), and infertility duration were determined as predictors associated with fertility status (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Although varicocele repair improved the DFI, the fertility rate was achieved in less than one-third of patients; it seems that the other parameters, such as the history of smoking, occupational heated exposure, overweight, and duration of infertility should be considered as predictors of fertility status, in primary infertile men who are a candidate for varicocelectomy.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Femur neck fractures are common fractures among the elderly. Hemiarthroplasty is a surgical choice for femur neck fractures in patients older than 70 years. This surgery is performed using two main methods: Posterolateral and Direct lateral. Here in this study, we aimed to evaluate and compare surgical and post-surgical complications of these two methods. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study was performed on 154 patients with femur neck fractures between 2017-2021. All patients with femur neck fractures who had been under hemiarthroplasty entered this study. Data regarding complications such as dislocation, mortality, cause of mortality, repeated surgery and incidence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in both Posterolateral and Direct lateral surgical approaches were collected and analyzed. RESULTS: We indicated that there is no significant difference between the two surgical approaches regarding dislocation (P=0.06), mortality (P=0.598) and repeated operation (P=0.550). CONCLUSION: Taken together there are no significant differences between the two surgical approaches and we suggest that clinicians could decide based on their experiences and the clinical condition of patients.

ABSTRACT

Topotactic transformations between related crystal structures are a powerful emerging route for the synthesis of novel quantum materials. Whereas most such "soft chemistry" experiments have been carried out on polycrystalline powders or thin films, the topotactic modification of single crystals, the gold standard for physical property measurements on quantum materials, has been studied only sparsely. Here, we report the topotactic reduction of La1−xCaxNiO3 single crystals to La1−xCaxNiO2+δ using CaH2 as the reducing agent. The transformation from the three-dimensional perovskite to the quasi­two-dimensional infinite-layer phase was thoroughly characterized by x-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, magnetometry, and electrical transport measurements. Our work demonstrates that the infinite-layer structure can be realized as a bulk phase in crystals with micrometer-sized single domains. The electronic properties of these specimens resemble those of epitaxial thin films rather than powders with similar compositions.

ABSTRACT

We discovered superconductivity at 4.8 K in the hexagonal layered compound La2IRu2 comprising a triangular lattice of the La and a honeycomb lattice of the Ru atoms. First-principles calculations reveal a two-dimensional band structure made up of La 5d and Ru 4d electrons and formal oxidation states +1.5 for the La and the uncommon oxidation state -1 for the Ru atoms. The temperature dependence of the specific heat indicates fully gapped superconductivity. Nevertheless, the upper critical field of this compound violates the Pauli limit. We argue that the high upper critical field is ascribed to an antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling in the unique multilayer structure.
