ABSTRACT

In this study, we investigated the effect of pentoxifylline, an inhibitor of TNF-alpha, on the contact sensitivity response induced by nickel. For induction, open epicutaneous sensitization by NiSO4. 6 H2O (25% aq.) solution was applied on the backs of 38 albino guinea pigs 5 days a week for 4 weeks. NaCl (0.9%) solution was applied epicutaneously to 10 albino guinea pigs as a control group. 19 were sensitized by nickel and developed positive patch test reactions. Patch tests were repeated after 10 of the sensitized pigs were given pentoxifylline 20 mg/kg/day orally. At the end of this study, only 2 positive patch test reactions were observed in the pentoxifylline-treated group, while 7/9 of the untreated guinea pigs developed positive reactions. These results suggest that pentoxifylline inhibits the contact sensitivity response induced by nickel only during drug administration.

ABSTRACT

The efficacy, safety, required duration of treatment, and patient preference for oral fluconazole 150 mg/week in the treatment of 521 patients with cutaneous candidosis, tinea corporis, tinea cruris or tinea pedis were assessed in an open, multicentre, noncomparative trial. Patients received weekly doses of fluconazole 150mg for an average of 4.65 weeks. Cultures were examined microscopically at baseline, at 2-week intervals, at study end, and at long term follow-up (4 to 6 weeks after the last dose). All adverse events were recorded and rated; patients with laboratory findings outside normal values were monitored. Forms regarding patient preference for oral or topical medication type were assessed from 19 centres at study end. Clinical evaluation demonstrated an overall success rate (cure plus improvement) of 96% at the end of therapy, and 92% overall success rate at long term follow-up. Eradication of pathogens based on culture was equally high, with 92% eradicated at the end of therapy and 89% eradicated at long term follow-up. Patient tolerability was good; only 7 patients (1.3%) discontinued therapy because of adverse events, in 2 cases because of laboratory abnormalities. These findings suggest that oral fluconazole therapy is safe. This study demonstrated that weekly oral doses of fluconazole 150mg were effective in the treatment of tinea corporis, tinea cruris, tinea pedis and cutaneous candidosis. Furthermore, there was a high patient preference for oral fluconazole over previous topical therapy.

ABSTRACT

Vascular lesions in Behçet's disease are generally localized in the venous system: up to 24% of the cases reported in the literature are accompanied by thrombosis/thrombophlebitis. Reports of arterial involvement are rare but have increased during the last decade. Surgical treatments of arterial aneurysms and occlusions are often followed by recurrences due to progression or relapses of the inflammatory vessel wall lesions. Aneurysms of the pulmonary artery are rare. They may be complicated by thrombosis within the aneurysm and massive hemoptysis due to bronchial erosion and formation of an arterio-bronchial fistula. 27 cases of Behçet's disease are reported.
