ABSTRACT

In this paper, the relationship between black liquor and microbial growth, enzymatic secretion and humus formation in composting was studied. The results showed that black liquor inoculation is an effective way to promote fermentation process. After black liquor inoculation, the abundance of Corynebacterium, Aequorivita, and Pedobacter, which have the catalase and oxidase activity, has been significantly increased. The enzymatic activity of alkaline phosphatase, catalase, peroxidase and invertase was 40 mg/(g·24h), 6.5 mg/(g·20 min), 13 100 mg/(g·24h), and 6100 mg/(g·24h) respectively at day 18. Humic acid and fulvic acid concentration was 12 g/kg and 11 g/kg which is higher than that of the treatments of no black liquor inoculation. The results suggested that black liquor inoculation was beneficial to indigenous microorganisms reproduce efficiently, then the secretion of enzymes related to cellulose, hemicellulose, and lipid hydrolysis, and the formation of humic substances.

ABSTRACT

The human body has tremendous self-healing capacity and regeneration after injuries and pathogen invasions. These factors are particularly important in older adults which take longer to heal and recover physically. In addition to clinical investigations, perspectives from both experts in the field and the living experiences of the general public could play significant roles to enhance the body's healing mechanisms in older adults. A semi-structured interview was conducted which included 15 participants (9 experts and 6 older adults aged 65 years and older). Content analysis with an inductive approach was employed about participants' experiences and perspectives. All participants in this study revealed that self-healing mechanisms can be enhanced through physiological, psychological, and socio-environmental factors. When more of these factors can be integrated into a recovery management plan, it can hasten self-healing in older adults. Social capability has a profound impact on an individual's mental health while oral health and hygiene significantly affect the nutritional intake status. In regards to physical aspects, regular daily activity patterns, nutritious eating, moderate exercise, and sleep quality are significant, while psychological aspects such as cheerfulness, positive attitudes, and good interpersonal relationships can help control chronic diseases.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND/AIM: The early stage of atherosclerosis (AS) demonstrates a lipid-driven inflammatory cytokine increase. In the present study, we aimed to use ultrasound-targeted microbubble delivery (UTMD) therapy with the Endostar-loaded target microbubbles (MBs) to reduce AS-related inflammatory response. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Normal and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were placed in a parallel-plate flow chamber. MBs were perfused through the parallel-plate flow chamber to mimic physiological blood flow. Five groups were set up: G1: Negative control (normal HUVECs); G2: LPS control (LPS induced HUVECs); G3: ICAM-1-loaded-MBs (MBi); G4: Endostar-loaded-MBs (MBe) and G5: Endostar-ICAM-1-loaded-MBs (MBei). mRNA expression of inflammatory factors and release of inflammatory cytokines were detected by RT-PCR and ELISA, respectively. RESULTS: After treatment with MBei, the mRNA expression of cell adhesion molecule-1 (CD31) (p=0.004), endothelin-1 (ET-1) (p=0.010), von willebrand factor (vWF) (p=0.018), extracellular regulated protein kinases (ERK) (p=0.046) and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) (p=0.003) were significantly reduced compared to LPS-induced HUVECs. Release of inflammatory cytokines including tissue factor (TF) (p=0.033), tissue factor pathway inhibitor (TF-PI) (p=0.019), ET-1 (p=0.014), vWF (p=0.030) and blood-coagulation factor VIIα (FVIIα) (p=0.000) were also significantly reduced compared to LPS-induced HUVECs. CONCLUSION: UTMD therapy can inhibit the inflammatory response by reducing atherosclerotic-related inflammatory factors, suggesting a potential treatment at the early-stage of AS.

ABSTRACT

Self-healing, an intrinsic healing capacity, helps individuals' bodies and minds to regain wholeness and is significant in the pursuit of one's own healthy ageing and independence. This study was intended to develop and preliminarily test the reliability and validity of the self-healing assessment scale (SHAS) for community-dwelling older adults, and was conducted in three phases. Phase 1: The definitions of self-healing were synthesized from our knowledge of the literature regarding the ontology of self-healing and panels of 25 experts. The initial version of the 12-item questionnaire was developed by the in-depth interviews of focus groups and panels, and the content was validated by six experts. Phase 2: A cross-sectional survey, including a total of 500 community-dwelling older adults with a mean age of 71.76, was then conducted for the preliminary reliability and validity test. The content validity indices were satisfied. Twelve items were retained, and three factors were identified, namely, physical and mental state, socioeconomic and environmental status, and independent lifestyle, which explained 65.8% of the variance under explorative approval. Phase 3: the standardized factor above 60 obtained by confirmatory factorial analysis indicated good convergent validity. The relationship between self-healing and health-related quality of life was confirmed via concurrent validity testing. The SHAS can facilitate the evaluation of factors associated with community-dwelling older adults' self-healing capacity. Programs tailored to enhance self-healing capacity should be designed, implemented, and inspected regarding their effectiveness in older adults.
