ABSTRACT

Enhancing the kinetic performance of thick electrodes is essential for improving the efficiency of lithium extraction processes. Biochar, known for its affordability and unique three-dimensional (3D) structure, is utilized across various applications. In this study, we developed a biochar-based, 3D-conductive network thick electrode (∼20 mg cm-2) by in-situ deposition of LiFePO4 (LFP) onto watermelon peel biomass (WB). Utilizing Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations complemented by experimental data, we confirmed that this The thick electrode exhibits outstanding kinetic properties and a high capacity for lithium intercalation in brines, even in environments where the Magnesia-lithium ratios are significantly high. The electrode showed an impressive intercalation capacity of 30.67 mg g-1 within 10 min in a pure lithium solution. It also maintained high intercalation performance (31.17 mg g-1) in simulated brines with high Magnesia-lithium ratios. Moreover, in actual brine, it demonstrated a significant extraction capacity (23.87 mg g-1), effectively lowering the Magnesia-lithium ratio from 65 to 0.50. This breakthrough in high-conductivity thick electrode design offers new perspectives for lithium extraction technologies.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: The aim of the study was to investigate the clinical characteristics, surgical treatment, and long-term efficacy of primary right heart tumors. METHODS: This study is retrospective analysis of the clinical data of 70 patients with primary right heart tumors admitted to our department between 1980 and 2022 (observation group) and 70 patients with left heart tumors during the same period (control group). The surgical treatment was performed under cardiopulmonary bypass after differential diagnosis by echocardiography, cardiac CTA, and PET-CT before the surgery. The perioperative characteristics, recurrence rate, and long-term survival rates of right heart tumor versus left heart tumor were compared. RESULTS: The most common pathological types of right heart tumors were myxoma (60%), lipoma (8.57%), and papillary elastofibroma (7.14%). During the perioperative period, there were 1 case of systemic embolism in the observation group, compared with 6 in the control group (p = 0.026), 13 cases of malignant tumor in the observation group versus 1 in the control group (p = 0.01). During the follow-up period, there were 15 cases of tumor recurrence and 17 cases of death in the observation group versus 4 (p = 0.002) and 7 in the control group (p = 0.006), comparatively. CONCLUSION: Compared with left heart tumors, primary right heart tumors had a higher incidence of malignant tumors and a lower risk of systemic embolism during perioperative period. During the follow-up period, primary right heart tumors had a higher rate of tumor recurrence and a lower long-term survival rate.

ABSTRACT

The Warden procedure was introduced for surgical repair of partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection to the higher portion of the superior vena cava in an attempt to decrease the incidence of postoperative sinoatrial node dysfunction and pulmonary venous obstruction. However, postoperative cavoatrial channel stenosis and obstruction up to 20% and 10%, respectively, requiring catheter intervention has been reported. In this article, we describe a modified cavoatrial anastomotic technique to avoid postprocedural superior vena cava stenosis.

ABSTRACT

Multiple muscular ventricular septal defects treated with a single device have been reported before, but the way of choosing a suitable occluder is not well described. Implantation of an oversized device might lead to potential side effects. We described our experience with a single device to close two nearby muscular ventricular septal defects perventricularly, and specifically the decision-making process used to choose the suitable occluder.

ABSTRACT

The production of transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-beta1) has been reported as being significantly associated with the gene polymorphism in the leader sequence at positions +29. The current study aimed to evaluate the associations between the polymorphism and the clinical characteristics of chronic hepatitis C (CHC). A total of 422 (252 men; mean age: 49.7 +/- 11.2 years) Taiwanese CHC patients with liver biopsies were enrolled. The TGF-beta1 gene polymorphism at position +29 (T or C), hepatitis C virus (HCV) RNA genotypes, and serum HCV RNA levels of these patients were determined. Of the 422 patients, the frequency of the T allele was 45.4%. Based on univariate analyses, a significantly lesser proportion of patients with allele T had high viral loads than those who were without allele T (P = 0.026). The lesser HCV RNA levels and HCV genotype 1b infection were significantly associated with the inheritance of the T allele in female patients based on univariate (P = 0.012 and 0.007, respectively) and multivariate regression (odds ratio/95% confidence interval: 0.434/0.219-0.859 and 0.468/0.237-0.927, respectively) analyses. In male patients with or without inheritance of the T allele, the clinical characteristics were similar. In conclusion, the association between TGF-beta1 polymorphism and virologic characteristics of chronic HCV infection implicated a significant role of host genetic factors on the clinical features of CHC. Female patients who carry T allele at position +29 were predisposed to be associated with HCV genotype non-1b infection and lesser HCV viral load, which revealed the gender effect.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Both surgical repair and transcatheter closure of isolated ventricular septal defects are known to have limitations in children. This report describes the short-term results of perventricular device closure of nonmuscular ventricular septal defects without cardiopulmonary bypass in young children. METHODS: Thirty patients who had nonmuscular ventricular septal defects underwent perventricular closure by minimally invasive technique without cardiopulmonary bypass. A subxiphoid minimally invasive incision was performed. Under the continuous guidance of transesophageal echocardiography, the free wall of the right ventricle was punctured and a guidewire was introduced into the left ventricle through the defect. A delivery sheath was advanced over the wire and through the defect into the left ventricle. The device was released. RESULTS: Closure was successful in 27 patients (90%). There was no mortality or atrioventricular block perioperatively or during the entire follow-up period. Three patients developed incomplete right bundle branch blocks and seven patients developed new trace or mild tricuspid regurgitation after the closure. The mean hospital stay was 3.6 +/- 0.7 days (range, 3 to 5 days) and no patient needed any blood or blood products. Follow-up at 6 months showed that two of the three patients had persistent incomplete right bundle branch block and three of the seven patients had persistent closure-related trace or mild tricuspid regurgitation. CONCLUSIONS: Perventricular device closure of isolated ventricular septal defects without cardiopulmonary bypass appeared to be safe and efficacious in selected young children. The outcomes of short-term follow-up are acceptable.

ABSTRACT

This is a case report of a patient who presented with acute pancreatitis without the common causes. A pancreatic biopsy revealed large B cell lymphoma. Spleen lymphoma with pancreatic involvement inducing acute pancreatitis, which is a rare disorder, was diagnosed. Here we also review the few similar cases reported in the literature.
