ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study aimed to describe the process of developing a validated pediatric nursing simulation scenario template using the real-time Delphi method. METHODS: A panel of 13 pediatric nursing experts participated in a real-time Delphi survey conducted over two rounds. Initially, 83 items were included in the questionnaire focusing on the structure and content of the simulation scenario template. Data analysis involved calculating the content validity ratio (CVR) and the coefficient of variation to assess item validity and stability. RESULTS: Through iterative rounds of the Delphi survey, a consensus was reached among the experts, resulting in the development of a pediatric nursing simulation scenario template comprising 41 items across nine parts. The CVR values ranged from 0.85 to 1.0, indicating a high consensus among experts regarding the inclusion of all items in the template. CONCLUSION: This study presents a novel approach for developing a pediatric nursing simulation scenario template using real-time Delphi methods. The real-time Delphi method facilitated the development of a comprehensive and scientifically grounded pediatric nursing simulation scenario template. Our template aligns with the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning standards, and provides valuable guidance for educators in designing effective simulation scenarios, contributing to enhanced learning outcomes and better preparation for pediatric clinical practice. However, consideration of cultural and contextual adaptations is necessary, and further research should explore alternative consensus criteria.

ABSTRACT

Childhood and adolescence are crucial periods for developing one's awareness of sexuality. Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) during these stages is essential for overall growth, fostering healthy self-concepts, and addressing diverse sexual issues among children and adolescents globally. A meta-analysis was conducted to analyze the effectiveness of CSE programs. A literature search was performed on EMBASE, PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, and PsycInfo for studies published before 14 June 2023, and based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. We used the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (CMA, V4) software version 4.0 for the analysis and interpreted the effect sizes according to Cohen's definition. Between 2011 and 2020, 21 studies on CSE were published, with the United States having the most publications (17). Of the 34 studies reviewed, 20 were randomized controlled trials. The primary population for CSE was middle/high school students (15), with the most frequent age range being 10-19 years (26). The overall effect size of CSE was significant (effect size = 1.31, p < 0.001), with cognition (effect size = 5.76, p < 0.001) being the most significant. CSE is an effective educational tool for children and adolescents with a significant impact on variables such as cognition and abstinence. It should be incremental from childhood and adolescence to adulthood.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: To evaluate the sensitivity of corticomedullary-phase imaging for detecting urinary stones in patients with renal colic who visited the emergency department. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study included 253 patients with suspected renal colic from two tertiary hospitals in South Korea, who visited the emergency department and underwent CT urography. Two radiologists blinded to the clinical history independently reviewed the corticomedullary-phase images. The sensitivity for identifying urinary stones were evaluated for each reviewer. After the initial evaluation, the images were re-evaluated based on patient history. The sensitivity of re-evaluation were recorded. Results: Of 253 patients, 150 (59%) had urinary stones. Among them, significant stones were observed in 138 patients (92%), and obstructive changes on CT in 124 patients (82.7%). For identifying significant urinary stones, the sensitivity was 98.6% (136/138) for both the reviewers. For identifying significant urinary stones with urinary obstruction, the sensitivity was 99.2% (123/124) for reviewer 1, and 100% (124/124) for reviewer 2. The sensitivity for identifying significant stones increased from 98.6% to 100% for reviewer 1, and from 98.6% to 99.3% for reviewer 2 in the re-evaluation session. Conclusion: The corticomedullary-phase CT urography was sensitive for diagnosing urolithiasis in patients with acute renal colic who visited the emergency department.

ABSTRACT

Nurse turnover is a critical issue in Korea, as it affects the quality of patient care and increases the financial burden on healthcare systems. To address this problem, this study aimed to develop and evaluate a machine learning-based prediction model for nurse turnover in Korea and analyze factors influencing nurse turnover. The study was conducted in two phases: building the prediction model and evaluating its performance. Three models, namely, decision tree, logistic regression, and random forest were evaluated and compared to build the nurse turnover prediction model. The importance of turnover decision factors was also analyzed. The random forest model showed the highest accuracy of 0.97. The accuracy of turnover prediction within one year was improved to 98.9% with the optimized random forest. Salary was the most important decision factor for nurse turnover. The nurse turnover prediction model developed in this study can efficiently predict nurse turnover in Korea with minimal personnel and cost through machine learning. The model can effectively manage nurse turnover in a cost-effective manner if utilized in hospitals or nursing units.

ABSTRACT

The objectives of this study were to synthesize gold nanoparticles by biomineralization using metal-reducing bacteria and to characterize their mineralogical properties. The metal-reducing bacteria were able to reduce Au(III) to Au(0) with organic fatty acids as electron donors, as indicated by the color change of the culture solution from colorless gold ions to black precipitates at 25 degrees C. XRD, SEM- and TEM-EDS analyses of the precipitates showed that Au(0) was precipitated and formed at either the cell membrane or extracellularly. The Au(0) nanoparticles were about 200 nm in size and ball-shaped. Biomineralization for elemental Au(0) nanoparticle synthesis may be useful for the recovery of natural gold in natural environments.

ABSTRACT

Carbon coils could be synthesized using C2H2/H2 as source gases along with SF6 as an incorporated additive gas using a thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) system. To obtain geometrically controlled carbon coils, a cyclic process, namely the turning on and off of C2H2 or SF6 flow during the initial reaction stage, was carried out. According to the different reaction processes, different interruption/injection times of C2H2 or SF6 flow and different injection sequences of the gas flow were investigated while maintaining the identical overall injection time of C2H2 and/or SF6 flow. The formation of carbon microcoils (CMCs) is favored by the lowest interruption/injection time ratio of SF6 flow within one cycle. In addition, the injection of SF6 flow prior to the injection of C2H2 flow promotes the formation of CMCs. Based on these results we revealed the role of the SF6 flow injection for the enhanced formation of geometrically controlled CMCs. The etching of materials, thereby promoting an increase in the number of nucleation sites for the survived growth species to form CMCs, by the increased fluorine concentration, originating from the dominant SF6 influx, is understood to be the main cause for the exclusive CMCs formation.

ABSTRACT

Nanobiotechnology represents an economic alternative for chemical and physical methods of nanoparticles formation. The objectives of this study were to synthesize selenium nanoparticles by microbial processes using anaerobic metal-reducing bacteria as well as to characterize mineralogical properties of the nanoparticles. The selenium nanoparticles were about 200 nm in size and ball shaped. Microbial processes for elemental selenium synthesis may be useful for recovery of natural selenate in the natural environments and immobilization of selenium isotope in the high level nuclear waste disposal sites.
