ABSTRACT

Cyanobacteriochromes (CBCRs) are distinctive tetrapyrrole (bilin)-binding photoreceptors exclusively found in cyanobacteria. Unlike canonical phytochromes, CBCRs require only a GAF (cGMP-phosphodiesterase/adenylate cyclase/FhlA) domain for autolyase activity to form a bilin adduct via a Cys residue and cis-trans photoisomerization. Apart from the canonical Cys, which attaches covalently to C31 in the A-ring of the bilin, some GAF domains of CBCRs contain a second-Cys in the Asp-Xaa-Cys-Phe (DXCF) motif, responsible for isomerization of phycocyanobilin (PCB) to phycoviolobilin (PVB) and/or for the formation of a reversible 2nd thioether linkage to the C10. Unlike green/teal-absorbing GAF proteins lacking ligation activity, the second-Cys in another teal-absorbing lineage (DXCF blue/teal group) exhibits both isomerization and ligation activity due to the presence of the Tyr instead of His next to the canonical Cys. Herein, we discovered an atypical CBCR GAF protein, Tpl7205g1, belonging to the DXCF blue/teal group, but having His instead of Tyr next to the first-Cys. Consistent with its subfamily, the second-Cys of Tpl7205g1 did not form a thioether linkage at C10 of PCB, showing only isomerization activity. Instead of forming 2nd thioether linkage, this novel GAF protein exhibits a pH-dependent photocycle between protonated 15Z and deprotonated 15E. Site-directed mutagenesis to the GAF scaffolds revealed its combined characteristics, including properties of teal-DXCF CBCRs and red/green-absorbing CBCRs (XRG CBCRs), suggesting itself as the evolutionary bridge between the two CBCR groups. Our study thus sheds light on the expanded spectral tuning characteristics of teal-light absorbing CBCRs and enhances feasibility of engineering these photoreceptors.

ABSTRACT

KEY MESSAGE: Hyperspectral features enable accurate classification of soybean seeds using linear discriminant analysis and GWAS for novel seed trait genes. Evaluating crop seed traits such as size, shape, and color is crucial for assessing seed quality and improving agricultural productivity. The introduction of the SUnSet toolbox, which employs hyperspectral sensor-derived image analysis, addresses this necessity. In a validation test involving 420 seed accessions from the Korean Soybean Core Collections, the pixel purity index algorithm identified seed- specific hyperspectral endmembers to facilitate segmentation. Various metrics extracted from ventral and lateral side images facilitated the categorization of seeds into three size groups and four shape groups. Additionally, quantitative RGB triplets representing seven seed coat colors, averaged reflectance spectra, and pigment indices were acquired. Machine learning models, trained on a dataset comprising 420 accession seeds and 199 predictors encompassing seed size, shape, and reflectance spectra, achieved accuracy rates of 95.8% for linear discriminant analysis model. Furthermore, a genome-wide association study utilizing hyperspectral features uncovered associations between seed traits and genes governing seed pigmentation and shapes. This comprehensive approach underscores the effectiveness of SUnSet in advancing precision agriculture through meticulous seed trait analysis.

BACKGROUND: We previously reported the mean 6-year outcomes of total hip arthroplasty (THA) using fourth-generation ceramic-on-ceramic (CoC) articulations. With extended observations, this study aimed to report the mean 12-year outcomes focusing on bearing-related complications of CoC THA. METHODS: We reviewed primary CoC THAs performed between May 2009 and April 2012 at a single institution. Of the 831 hips (739 patients), 716 hips (635 patients) that satisfied a minimum 10-year follow-up were included. The mean age at operation was 54 years (range, 16 to 83). The occurrence of bearing-specific complications, including ceramic fractures and noise generation, was evaluated. The mean follow-up duration was 12 years (range, 10 to 14). RESULTS: A total of 2 (0.3%) ceramic liner fractures occurred, as previously reported. No additional ceramic fractures were observed during the extended follow-up period. However, the cumulative incidence of audible noise increased from 6.4 (48 of 749) to 8.2% (59 of 716). Of the 59 hips with noise, 26 (44.1%) developed noise within 1 year, whereas 13 (22.0%) presented with noise more than 5 years after THA. The noise was described as clicking in 35 hips (4.9%) and as squeaking in 24 hips (3.4%). No revision surgeries were performed for noise, except in 2 cases of concomitant liner fractures. The implant survivorship free of any revision was 98.1% at 12 years. CONCLUSIONS: No additional ceramic fractures were identified in this extension study at a minimum follow-up of 10 years. However, the prevalence of articular noise has increased from 6.4 to 8.2% since the previous report. Possible late-onset noise should be considered when performing CoC THA in younger patients.

ABSTRACT

Importance: Surgical site infections (SSIs) are prevalent hospital-acquired infections with significant patient impacts and global health care burdens. The World Health Organization recommends using wound protector devices in abdominal surgery as a preventive measure to lower the risk of SSIs despite limited evidence. Objective: To examine the efficacy of a dual-ring, plastic wound protector in lowering the SSI rate in open gastrointestinal (GI) surgery irrespective of intra-abdominal contamination levels. Design, Setting, and Participants: This multicenter, patient-blinded, parallel-arm randomized clinical trial was conducted from August 2017 to October 2022 at 13 hospitals in an academic setting. Patients undergoing open abdominal bowel surgery (eg, for bowel perforation) were eligible for inclusion. Intervention: Patients were randomized 1:1 to a dual-ring, plastic wound protector to protect the incision site of the abdominal wall (experimental group) or a conventional surgical gauze (control group). Main Outcomes and Measures: The primary end point was the rate of SSI within 30 days of open GI surgery. Results: A total of 458 patients were randomized; after 1 was excluded from the control group, 457 were included in the intention-to-treat analysis (mean [SD] age, 58.4 [12.1] years; 256 [56.0%] male; 341 [74.6%] with a clean-contaminated wound): 229 in the wound protector group and 228 in the surgical gauze group. The overall SSI rate in the intention-to-treat analysis was 15.7% (72 of 458 patients). The SSI rate for the wound protector was 10.9% (25 of 229 patients) compared with 20.5% (47 of 229 patients) with surgical gauze. The wound protector significantly reduced the risk of SSI, with a relative risk reduction (RRR) of 46.81% (95% CI, 16.64%-66.06%). The wound protector significantly decreased the SSI rate for clean-contaminated wounds (RRR, 43.75%; 95% CI, 3.75%-67.13%), particularly for superficial SSIs (RRR, 42.50%; 95% CI, 7.16%-64.39%). Length of hospital stay was similar in both groups (mean [SD], 15.2 [10.5] vs 15.3 [10.2] days), as were the overall postoperative complication rates (20.1% vs 18.8%). Conclusions and Relevance: This randomized clinical trial found a significant reduction in SSI rates when a plastic wound protector was used during open GI surgery compared with surgical gaze, supporting the World Health Organization recommendation for use of wound protector devices in abdominal surgery. ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: High-risk stage III colon cancer has a considerably poorer prognosis than stage II and low-risk stage III colon cancers. Nevertheless, most guidelines recommend similar adjuvant treatment approaches for all these stages despite the dearth of research focusing on high-risk stage III colon cancer and the potential for improved prognosis with intensive adjuvant treatment. Given the the proven efficacy of triplet chemotherapy in metastatic colorectal cancer treatment, the goal of this study is to evaluate the oncologic efficacy and safety of mFOLFIRINOX in comparison to those of the current standard of care, mFOLFOX 6, as an adjuvant treatment for patients diagnosed with high-risk stage III colon cancer after radical resection. METHODS: This multicenter, randomized (1:1), open-label, phase II trial will assess and compare the effectiveness and toxicity of mFOLFIRINOX and mFOLFOX 6 in patients with high-risk stage III colon cancer after radical resection. The goal of the trial is to enroll 312 eligible patients, from 11 institutes, aged between 20 and 70 years, with an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance status of 0-2, or between 70 and 75 with an ECOG performance status of 0. Patients will be randomized into two arms - Arm A, the experimental arm, and Arm B, the reference arm - and will receive 12 cycles of mFOLFIRINOX and mFOLFOX 6 every 2 weeks, respectively. The primary endpoint of this study is the 3-year disease-free survival, and secondary endpoints include the 3-year overall survival and treatment toxicity. DISCUSSION: The Frost trial would help determine the oncologic efficacy and safety of adjuvant triplet chemotherapy for high-risk stage III colon cancers and ultimately improve prognoses. ABSTRACT

In this paper, we propose an improved clustering algorithm for wireless sensor networks (WSNs) that aims to increase network lifetime and efficiency. We introduce an enhanced fuzzy spider monkey optimization technique and a hidden Markov model-based clustering algorithm for selecting cluster heads. Our approach considers factors such as network cluster head energy, cluster head density, and cluster head position. We also enhance the energy-efficient routing strategy for connecting cluster heads to the base station. Additionally, we introduce a polling control method to improve network performance while maintaining energy efficiency during steady transmission periods. Simulation results demonstrate a 1.2% improvement in network performance using our proposed model.

ABSTRACT

The global unmet need for kidney replacement therapy means that millions of people die every year as they cannot afford treatment. Peritoneal dialysis (PD) offers comparable survival to haemodialysis and is often more affordable, but one barrier to increasing access is that conventional manufacturing and distribution of PD fluid is costly. Here we report the results from a pilot proof-of-principal study demonstrating for the first time that the Ellen Medical Devices Point-of-Care system can be used by patients to produce sterile PD fluid at the point-of-care. With further development, this low-cost system could offer a solution to the many millions of people around the world who currently cannot afford treatment for kidney failure.

ABSTRACT

The regression relationship between water discharge rates and nutrient concentrations can provide a quick and straightforward way to estimate nutrient loads. However, recent studies indicated that the relationship might produce large biases in load estimates and, therefore, may not be applicable in certain types of cases. The goal of this study is to explore the theoretical reasons behind the selective applicability of the regression relationship between flow rates and nitrate + nitrite concentrations. For this study, we examined daily flow and nitrate + nitrite concentration observations made at the outlets of 22 watersheds monitored by the Heidelberg Tributary Loading Program (HTLP). The statistical relationship between the flow rates and concentrations was explored using regression equations offered by the LOAD ESTimator (LOADEST). Results demonstrated that the use of the regression equations provided nitrate + nitrite load estimates at acceptable accuracy levels (NSE≥0.35 and |PBIAS|≤30.0%) in 14 watersheds (64 % of 22 study watersheds). The regression relationships provided highly biased results at eight watersheds (36 %), implying their limited applicability. The heteroscedasticity of the residuals led to the high bias and resulting inaccurate regression, which was commonly found in watersheds where low flow had high nitrate + nitrite concentration variations. Conversely, the regression relationships provided acceptable accuracy for watersheds that had a relatively constant variance of the nitrate + nitrite concentrations. The results indicate that the homoscedasticity of residuals is the key assumption to be satisfied to estimate nitrate + nitrite loads from a statistical regression between flow discharge and nitrate + nitrite concentrations. The transport capacity (capacity-limited) concept implicitly assumed in the regression relationship between flow discharge and nitrate + nitrite concentrations is not always applicable, especially to agricultural areas in which nitrate + nitrite loads are highly variable depending on management practices (supply-limited). The findings suggest that the regression relationship should be carefully applied to areas in which intensive agricultural activities, including crop management and conservation practices, are implemented. Thus, the transport capacity concept is reasonably regarded to contribute to the homoscedasticity of residuals.

ABSTRACT

Cyanobacteriochromes (CBCRs) are linear tetrapyrrole bilin-binding photoreceptors of cyanobacteria that exhibit high spectral diversity, gaining attention in optogenetics and bioimaging applications. Several engineering studies on CBCRs were attempted, especially for designing near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent proteins with longer fluorescence wavelengths. However, despite continuous efforts, a key component regulating fluorescence emission property in CBCRs is still poorly understood. As a model system, we focused on red/green CBCR Slr1393g3, from the unicellular cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 to engineer Pr to get far-red light-emitting property. Energy profiling and pairwise structural comparison of Slr1393g3 variants effectively reveal the mutations that are critical to the fluorescence changes. H497 seems to play a key role in stabilizing the chromophore environment, especially the α3 helix, while H495, T499, and Q502 are potential key residues determining fluorescence emission peak wavelength. We also found that mutations of α2 and α4 helical regions are closely related to the chromophore binding stability and likely affect fluorescence properties. Taken together, our computational analysis suggests that the fluorescence of Slr1393g3 is mainly controlled by the stabilization of the chromophore binding pocket. The predicted key residues potentially regulating the fluorescence emission property of a red/green CBCR will be advantageous for designing improved NIR fluorescent protein when combined with in vitro molecular evolution approaches.

BACKGROUND: It is difficult to predict the expected survival after lumbar instrumented surgery for metastases owing to the difference among different cancer origins and the relatively short survival after surgery. AIMS: The aim of this study is to analyze the postoperative survival period of lumbar spinal metastasis patients who underwent lumbar instrumented surgery. METHODS: Data were collected from the Korean National Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service database. Patients who underwent lumbar spinal surgery with instrumentation between January 2011 and December 2015 for metastatic lumbar diseases were reviewed. The mean postoperative survival period of patients with metastatic lumbar cancer according to each primary cancer type was evaluated. RESULTS: A total of 628 patients were enrolled and categorized according to primary cancer type. The overall median survival rate was 1.11±1.30 years. The three most prevalent primary cancer groups were lung, hepatobiliary, and colorectal cancers, presenting relatively short postoperative survival rates (0.93±1.25, 0.74±0.75 and 0.74±0.88 years, respectively). The best postoperative survival period was observed in breast cancer (2.23±1.83 years), while urinary tract cancer showed the shortest postoperative survival period (0.59±0.69 years). CONCLUSION: The postoperative survival period of patients with lumbar metastatic spinal tumors according to different primary cancers after instrumented fusion was ˃1 year overall, with differences according to different primary origins. This result may provide information regarding the expected postoperative survival after instrumented surgery for lumbar spinal metastases.

BACKGROUND: Although the modular sleeve concept for femoral implants has several advantages, studies reporting on greater than 20-year outcomes are limited. This study aimed to report the mean 23-year results of total hip arthroplasty (THA) using a modular stem with metaphyseal fixation sleeve. METHODS: This study reviewed primary THAs performed using a modular stem between October 1994 and April 1998. Of the 272 hips (221 patients) identified, 220 hips (177 patients) satisfying the minimum 20-year follow-up were included. The Harris Hip Score was used for clinical evaluation. Final hip radiographs were analyzed to evaluate the implant stability and the extent of femoral osteolysis. The mean follow-up duration was 23 years (range, 20 to 28). RESULTS: The mean Harris Hip Score improved from 38 points (range, 26 to 67) preoperatively to 90 points (range, 71 to 100) at the final follow-up (P < .001). Femoral osteolysis was observed in 146 hips (67.1%), but 145 were located proximal to the osseo-integrated sleeve. Overall, 4 femoral revisions were performed; 2 for chronic infection, one for aseptic loosening, and one for periprosthetic femoral fracture. Of the 19 (8.6%) periprosthetic femoral fractures, the most common type was Vancouver AG (13 hips). One (0.5%) asymptomatic distal stem fracture occurred, while no complications were identified at the stem-sleeve junction. Implant survivorship free of any femoral revision was 98.3% at 23 years. CONCLUSIONS: A THA using a modular stem with metaphyseal fixation sleeve demonstrated 98.3% stem survivorship with excellent clinical outcomes at a mean follow-up of 23 years in non-obese patients.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Ambient temperature-induced hypocotyl elongation in Arabidopsis seedlings is sensed by the epidermis-localized phytochrome B (phyB) and transduced into auxin biosynthesis via a basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor, phytochrome-interacting factor 4 (PIF4). Once synthesized, auxin travels down from the cotyledons to the hypocotyl, triggering hypocotyl cell elongation. Thus, the phyB-PIF4 module involved in thermosensing and signal transduction is a potential genetic target for engineering warm temperature-insensitive plants. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to manipulate warm temperature-induced elongation of plants at the post-translational level using phyB variants with dark reversion, the expression of which is subjected to heat stress. METHODS: The thermosensitive growth response of Arabidopsis was manipulated by expressing the single amino acid substitution variant of phyB (phyB[G515E]), which exhibited a lower dark reversion rate than wild-type phyB. Other variants with slow (phyB[G564E]) or rapid (phyB[S584F]) dark reversion or light insensitivity (phyB[G767R]) were also included in this study for comparison. Warming-induced transient expression of phyB variants was achieved using heat shock-inducible promoters. Arabidopsis PHYB[G515E] and PHYB[G564E] were also constitutively expressed in rice in an attempt to manipulate the heat sensitivity of a monocotyledonous plant species. RESULTS: At an elevated temperature, Arabidopsis seedlings transiently expressing PHYB[G515E] under the control of a heat shock-inducible promoter exhibited shorter hypocotyls than those expressing PHYB and other PHYB variant genes. This warm temperature-insensitive growth was related to the lowered PIF4 and auxin responses. In addition, transgenic rice seedlings expressing Arabidopsis PHYB[G515E] and PHYB[G564E] showed warm temperature-insensitive shoot growth. CONCLUSION: Transient expression of phyB variants with altered dark reversion rates could serve as an effective optogenetic technique for manipulating PIF4-auxin-mediated thermomorphogenic responses in plants.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy is used to diagnose and treat upper gastrointestinal diseases, but it can also cause complications, including perforation. Perforation is a serious complication, so it is important to be aware of the risk factors in advance and to take precautions to prevent it. Case Presentation: We report a case of gastric perforation caused by excessive insufflation during upper gastrointestinal endoscopy in a 64-year-old man with a history of multiple active gastric ulcers. During the endoscopy, the patient did not cooperate and insufflation was performed for a prolonged period of time. This led to a mucosal laceration and a hole suspected to be a perforation on the lesser curvature of the gastric body. The patient was treated nonsurgically with fasting, intravenous fluids, antibiotics, intravenous proton pump inhibitors, and blood transfusions. No leakage was observed on the follow-up computed tomography scan, and the perforation site was completely healed 2 months later. Conclusion: In this case, the patient was successfully treated with conservative therapy alone. The treatment of gastric perforation caused by endoscopy has shifted toward conservative therapy in recent years.

BACKGROUND: Small circular staplers possess the advantage of being relatively easy to use when compared to larger circular staplers. However, there is some contention as to whether the use of small circular staples in colorectal surgery increases the incidence of anastomotic strictures. This study aimed to determine whether the frequency of anastomosis site stricture formation differs depending on stapler size when performing anastomosis in colorectal surgery. METHODS: Patients who underwent surgery for colon or rectal disease between June 1, 2009, and December 31, 2021, and who had circular staplers used for the formation of intestinal anastomoses post colectomy were included in our study. Propensity score matching with a 1:1 ratio using logistic regression was performed. The primary outcome was the anastomotic stricture rate, and the secondary outcome was total anastomotic complications. RESULTS: A total of 875 patients who were operated on by surgeons using 28/29-mm and 25-mm circular staplers were included. After propensity score matching, 106 patients were assigned to each group. Anastomotic strictures occurred in two cases (1.9%) from the 25-mm group and in four cases (3.8%) from the 28/29-mm group. There were no statistically significant differences between the two groups (p = 0.683). Anastomotic complications were observed in two cases (1.9%) from the 25-mm group and in six cases (5.7%) from the 28/29-mm group; no statistically significant differences were found (p = 0.280). CONCLUSION: Circular stapler size does not influence anastomotic stricture formation in colorectal surgery.

Orange carotenoid protein (OCP) of photosynthetic cyanobacteria binds to ketocarotenoids noncovalently and absorbs excess light to protect the host organism from light-induced oxidative damage. Herein, we found that mutating valine 40 in the α3 helix of Gloeocapsa sp. PCC 7513 (GlOCP1) resulted in blue- or red-shifts of 6-20 nm in the absorption maxima of the lit forms. We analyzed the origins of absorption maxima shifts by integrating X-ray crystallography, homology modeling, molecular dynamics simulations, and hybrid quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics calculations. Our analysis suggested that the single residue mutations alter the polar environment surrounding the bound canthaxanthin, thereby modulating the degree of charge transfer in the photoexcited state of the chromophore. Our integrated investigations reveal the mechanism of color adaptation specific to OCPs and suggest a design principle for color-specific photoswitches.

BACKGROUND: Polymeric clips are easy to apply, but whether they present more advantages than endoloops is unclear. This single-center, open-label, randomized controlled trial study was conducted to compare the advantages of using a polymeric clip versus an endoloop in terms of the surgical time. METHODS: Adult patients who were diagnosed with acute appendicitis without perforation on preoperative abdominal computed tomography and underwent laparoscopic appendectomy between August 6, 2019, and December 26, 2022, were included. Single-blinded randomization was performed in a 1:1 ratio between the endoloop and polymeric clip groups. The primary endpoint was the difference in surgery time between the polymeric clip and endoloop groups. The secondary endpoints were the difference in the application time of each instrument, difference in operation and anesthesia fees, as well as the frequency of complications. RESULTS: The completed trial included 104 and 103 patients in the polymeric clip and endoloop groups, respectively. The median surgery time with a polymeric clip was shorter than that with an endoloop; however, the difference was not significant (18 min 56 s vs 19 min 49 s, p = 0.426). Interestingly, the median time from applying the instrument to appendiceal cutting in the polymeric clip group was significantly shorter than that in the endoloop group (49.0 s vs 84.5 s, p < 0.001). No significant difference was observed between the two groups in terms of surgical (p = 0.120) and anesthetic (p = 0.719) costs, as well as the total number of postoperative complications (p > 0.999). CONCLUSION: A polymeric clip is a safe instrument that can reduce the time from applying the instrument to appendiceal cutting, although it does not affect the overall surgical time and operation fee when performing laparoscopic appendectomy for uncomplicated appendicitis. BACKGROUND: Periprosthetic femoral fractures (PFFs) remain a major concern following cementless total hip arthroplasty (THA). This study aimed to evaluate the association between different types of cementless tapered stems and the risk of postoperative PFF. METHODS: A retrospective review of primary THAs performed at a single center from January 2011 to December 2018 included 3,315 hips (2,326 patients). Cementless stems were classified according to their design. The incidence of PFF was compared between flat taper porous-coated stems (type A), rectangular taper grit-blasted stems (type B1), and quadrangular taper hydroxyapatite-coated stems (type B2). Multivariate regression analyses were performed to identify independent factors related to PFF. The mean follow-up duration was 61 months (range, 12 to 139). Overall, 45 (1.4%) postoperative PFFs occurred. RESULTS: The incidence of PFF was significantly higher in type B1 stems than in type A and type B2 stems (1.8 versus 0.7 versus 0.7%; P = .022). Additionally, more surgical treatments (1.7 versus 0.5 versus 0.7%; P = .013) and femoral revisions (1.2 versus 0.2 versus 0%; P = .004) were required for PFF in type B1 stems. After controlling for confounding variables, older age, diagnosis of hip fracture, and use of type B1 stems were significant factors associated with PFF. CONCLUSION: Type B1 rectangular taper stems were found to have higher risks for postoperative PFF and PFF requiring surgical management than type A and type B2 stems in THA. Femoral stem geometry should be considered when planning for cementless THA in elderly patients who have compromised bone quality.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The voice has been thought to be associated with emotions, but conducting large-scale research on this relationship has some limitations. To overcome these limitations, questionnaires have been utilized as a research tool. METHODS: A population-based cross-sectional study was done. A total of 15,977 participants completed questionnaires regarding self-recognition of voice disorder (SRVD), and mental health status. RESULTS: 1053(6.6 %) participants answered that they had SRVD. In the multivariate Cox proportional hazard model, psychological stress (Hazard ratio (HR) = 1.371, 95 % confidence interval (CI) = 1.154-1.629), depressive symptoms (HR = 1.626, 95 % CI = 1.323-1.997), suicidal ideation (HR = 1.739, 95 % CI = 1.418-2.133), and suicide attempt (HR =2.206, 95 % CI = 1.067-4.56) were all associated with SRVD. In SRVD lasting over three weeks, psychological stress (HR = 1.604, 95 % CI = 1.278-2.014), depressive symptoms (HR = 1.807, 95 % CI = 1.384-2.36), and suicidal ideation (HR = 2.073, 95 % CI = 1.587-2.709) were also significant factors. As the number of mental health problems increased, the odds ratio of both SRVD (OR = 2.49, 95 % CI = 1.839-3.37) and SRVD lasting over three weeks (OR = 3.254, 95 % CI = 2.242-4.725) increased, respectively. LIMITATIONS: SRVD and mental health status were judged only by simple questionnaires. Cross-sectional design and retrospective data could not draw causal relationships. CONCLUSIONS: SRVD and SRVD lasting over three weeks had a significant relationship with mental health status, including psychological stress, depressive symptoms, and suicidal ideation. There is a need to consider psychiatric treatment for individuals who visit hospitals with voice disorders.

ABSTRACT

Horse oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions were prepared and α-tocopherol was added at 0, 100, 200, and 500 ppm (α-T0, α-T100, α-T200, α-T500) to enhance its oxidative stability. Mean particle diameters of the O/W emulsions were 243-299 nm. Zeta potential values increased with the addition of α-tocopherol; however, they decreased during storage at 40 °C for 30 days. Particle size distribution of the O/W emulsion with α-tocopherol remained the same as that of α-T0. For lipid oxidation, the peroxide values of α-T0 and α-T500 were greatly increased from 2.96 and 2.89 to 13.76 and 12.46 mmol/kg oil, respectively, after 30 days. The α-T100 and α-T200 maintained lower peroxide values than other emulsions. Thiobarbituric acid-reactive substance values of α-T0 and α-T500 were higher than those of α-T100 and α-T200. These results indicate that the addition of α-tocopherol from 100 to 200 ppm to the horse oil-in-water emulsion effectively improves its oxidative stability during storage.
