ABSTRACT

El paradigma de apoyos y el de calidad de vida se han transformado en guías fundamentales para los avances en el ámbito de la discapacidad intelectual (DI). Con base en una muestra de 93 personas adultas con DI, se analiza, desde un enfoque cuantitativo no experimental, la relación entre la calidad de vida y las necesidades de apoyo, aplicando la escala INICO-FEAPS y la escala de Intensidad de Apoyos (SIS) para cada constructo. Los principales resultados evidencian que existe una relación fuerte e indirecta entre calidad de vida y necesidades de apoyos, y también la relevancia de analizar dichos resultados desde variables como grado de discapacidad, sexo o nivel socioeconómico. La discusión permite inferir la necesidad de discutir nuevas estrategias en torno a categorías como el grado de discapacidad, la autodeterminación e inclusión social, como elementos facilitadores de la calidad de vida y apoyos desde un enfoque integral que contribuya al desarrollo de estrategias de programas sociales para la población con DI. Based on a sample of 93 adults with ID, the relationship between Quality of Life and Support Needs is analyzed from a non-experimental quantitative approach, applying the INICO-FEAPS scale and the SIS Support Intensity scale for each construct. The main results show that there is a strong and indirect relationship between quality of life and support needs, and the relevance of analyzing these results from variables such as the degree of disability, sex or socioeconomic level. The discussion allows us to infer the need to discuss new strategies around categories such as the degree of disability, self-determination and social inclusion, as facilitating elements of quality of life and supporting a comprehensive approach that contributes to the development of social program strategies for the population with ID. ABSTRACT

Pollutant and nutrient mobility in natural waters is typically controlled by sorption onto the high surface area of colloidal particles, most of which may form by precipitation of Fe(III)(hydr)oxides. Therefore, prediction of the speciation and size of Fe is critical to managing water quality. Prediction from pH and dissolved oxygen (D.O.) saturation can fail because of Fe binding to natural organic matter (N.O.M.) in natural waters. We test the influence of environmental variables -temperature, illumination and mixing order of Fe and N.O.M. with D.O.- on the impact of N.O.M.. Differences in mixing order simulate Fe(II) mixing with N.O.M. in groundwater prior to emerging, in comparison to Fe(II) emerging into oxic surface waters containing N.O.M.. Fe speciation and size were measured in waters containing N.O.M. with and without D.O., but also a water to which N.O.M. and then D.O. were added sequentially. Without D.O. free Fe(II) bound to N.O.M. and became a filterable particle. Binding increased with pH and at 7.5 was sufficient for Fe speciation in oxic waters to become influenced by whether mixing had been sequential or simultaneous. Therefore, at high pH Fe speciation in oxic surface waters requires knowledge of N.O.M. content of this water and upstream groundwaters. Cold (10 °C) decreased anoxic binding of Fe(II) to N.O.M. and both cold and darkness alsodecreased Fe binding to N.O.M. under oxic conditions, because in both cases Fe(III)(hydr)oxide surfaces out-compete N.O.M. for binding Fe. Cold and darkness therefore overwhelm the effect of mixing order on oxic Fe speciation, and cold even makes the presence or absence of N.O.M. irrelevant. In the cold or dark, prediction of Fe speciation and size in surface waters may not require knowledge of N.O.M. content of upstream groundwaters. Furthermore, when cold, prediction may not even require knowledge of N.O.M. content of the surface waters.

ABSTRACT

Physalis peruviana L. belongs to the Solanaceae family and produces a spherical fruit used to treat various diseases. However, the chemical composition, nutritional characterization, and bioactive properties of the P. peruviana growing in the Andean region of the Atacama Desert have not been conducted so far. The results showed clear differences in the nutritional and bioactive characteristics of the fruits grown in arid environmental conditions, which were comparable to those from countries with a production tradition. The fruits studied showed a higher Ca, Cu, Mn, P, and Zn content and bioactive compounds such as flavonoids and tannins than those reported in the literature. UHPLC was performed to determine the main phenols. Gallic acid was identified as the predominant phenolic compound in this species (303.63 mg/100 g FW), of which to our knowledge no previous study has reported similar concentrations in this species. Moreover, Cape gooseberry extract has antioxidant and antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Pseudomonas syringae (MIC 0.313 mg/mL and MBC 1.25 mg/mL) was the most susceptible bacterium. Meanwhile, Erwinia rhapontici was the most resistant bacterium (MIC and MIB 5.00 mg/mL). Furthermore, it was found to inhibit α-amylase activity with an IC50 value (39.28 µg/mL) similar to that of acarbose (35.74 µg/mL). These results expand the knowledge of the species cultivated in arid environmental conditions and suggest an alternative for the potential use of this fruit to manage chronic diseases such as diabetes.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To present a bailout technique for bridging covered stent placement during branched endovascular aortic repair (BEVAR) in complex anatomy. TECHNIQUE: BEVAR is an alternative technique for the treatment of thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms (TAAAs). Visceral and renal vessels must be preserved by bridging covered stent placement through downward-oriented branches of the main stent graft device. Challenging anatomy such as kinking and elongation of the aorta, or type III aortic arch configuration may impede successful catheterization of these branches due to reduced steerability and pushability of the endovascular material. Different alternative techniques have been described to overcome these anatomic barriers. This technical note adds another endovascular solution to complex cases using the guiding sheath stabilizing technique. It is based on a standard "through-and-through" technique. An attached snare is inserted via femoral approach, providing a stable position for branch catheterization and bridging covered stent deployment. CONCLUSION: The stabilizing technique is safe and easy to perform and provides a stable position of the guiding sheath when antegrade branch catheterization is challenging. This technique is an additional tool for handling challenging cases.

ABSTRACT

The end-Cretaceous event was catastrophic for terrestrial communities worldwide, yet its long-lasting effect on tropical forests remains largely unknown. We quantified plant extinction and ecological change in tropical forests resulting from the end-Cretaceous event using fossil pollen (>50,000 occurrences) and leaves (>6000 specimens) from localities in Colombia. Late Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) rainforests were characterized by an open canopy and diverse plant-insect interactions. Plant diversity declined by 45% at the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary and did not recover for ~6 million years. Paleocene forests resembled modern Neotropical rainforests, with a closed canopy and multistratal structure dominated by angiosperms. The end-Cretaceous event triggered a long interval of low plant diversity in the Neotropics and the evolutionary assembly of today's most diverse terrestrial ecosystem.

ABSTRACT

The Lamiaceae family is an important source of species among medicinal plants highly valued for their biological properties and numerous uses in folk medicine. Origanum is one of the main genera that belong to this family. The purpose of the study was to determine the phenolic composition of the Origanum vulgare extract and evaluate the antimicrobial, antioxidant, and inhibitory activities of this species that grows in the Andean region of the Atacama Desert. High-performance liquid chromatography was performed to determine the main phenols. Rosmarinic acid was identified as the predominant phenolic compound in this species (76.01 mg/100 g DW), followed by protocatechuic acid, which to our knowledge, no previous study reported similar concentrations in O. vulgare. The oregano extract exhibited a content of total phenolic (3948 mg GAE/100 g DW) and total flavonoid (593 mg QE/100 g DW) with a higher DPPH antioxidant activity (IC50 = 40.58 µg/mL), compared to the same species grown under other conditions. Furthermore, it was found to inhibit α-glucosidase activity with an IC50 value (7.11 mg/mL) lower than acarbose (129.32 mg/mL). Pseudomonas syringae and Pantoea agglomerans (both MIC 0.313 mg/mL and MBC 1.25 mg/mL) were the bacteria most susceptible to oregano extract with the lowest concentration necessary to inhibit bacterial growth. These results open the door for the potential use of this plant to manage chronic diseases, and they expand the knowledge of the species cultivated in arid environmental conditions.

ABSTRACT: Soccer is one of the most popular sports in the world. Despite the concept that soccer is not a violent game, it can lead to several injuries in amateur and professional settings, including facial fractures. Previous studies of facial fractures in soccer were all retrospective and, to date, no prospective studies are available in the literature.The authors performed a comprehensive literature search using the terms "soccer" AND "facial fracture" OR "craniofacial fracture" and "football" AND "facial fracture" OR "craniofacial fracture" and retrieved 693 articles. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 11 articles were included in the present study.A total of 647 patients had suffered facial trauma, with a male-to-female ratio of 63.7:1. The patients' mean age was 27.3 years.The articles reported 670 fractures as follows: 219 (32.7%) in the zygoma, 197 (29.4%) in the nasal bone, 153 (23.6%) in the mandibula, 54 (8.0%) in the orbital wall, 12 (1.8%) in the frontal sinus, 10 (1.5%) in the alveolar bone, 3 (0.4%) in the maxilla, 3 (0.4%) in a Le Fort pattern, and 1 (0.1%) in a naso-orbito-ethmoid (NOE) pattern.Sports are a frequent cause of maxillofacial trauma and are responsible for 9.2% to 33.2% of such injuries. Soccer is a contact sport more associated with lower-limb injuries, but with a significant rate of facial fractures. As soccer is a popular sport played without facial protection and involving high-intensity movements and contact, the prevention of facial fractures related to this sport is crucial to improve the players' safety.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to characterize the in vitro antioxidant and antibacterial properties of oregano (Origanum vulgare) essential oil, as well as its chemical composition. To our best knowledge, there are few studies on oregano grown in the arid Andes region, but none on the metabolites produced and their bioactivity. This work identified fifty metabolites by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS)-monoterpene hydrocarbons, oxygenated monoterpenes, phenolic monoterpenes, sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, and oxygenated sesquiterpenes-present in the essential oil of oregano collected in the Atacama Desert. The main components of essential oregano oil were thymol (15.9%), Z-sabinene hydrate (13.4%), γ-terpinene (10.6%), p-cymene (8.6%), linalyl acetate (7.2%), sabinene (6.5%), and carvacrol methyl ether (5.6%). The antibacterial tests showed that the pathogenic bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella enterica and the phytopathogenic bacteria Erwinia rhapontici and Xanthomonas campestris were the most susceptible to oregano oil, with the lowest concentrations of oil necessary to inhibit their bacterial growth. Moreover, oregano oil showed antibacterial activity against bacteria associated with food poisoning. In conclusion, O. vulgare from the arid Andean region possesses an important antibacterial activity with a high potential in the food industry and agriculture.

Liver involvement occurs in 0.2 to 3% of patients with syphilis. We report three patients with liver involvement in syphilis. A 52-year-old male presenting with erythema and malaise. Laboratory showed a gamma glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) of 853 u/l, alkaline phosphatases of 1,010 U/L and VDRL was positive. Treatment with penicillin resolved the skin problem and normalized liver enzymes. A HIV positive 30-year-old male in peritoneal dialysis presenting with itching, malaise and markedly elevated GGT and alkaline phosphatases. VDRL was positive. He was treated with penicillin with remission of symptoms and enzyme normalization. A 43-year-old male presenting with erythema, malaise, arthralgias and elevated GGT and alkaline phosphatases. VDRL was positive and treatment with penicillin reverted symptoms and laboratory abnormalities.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the present study was to assess the reliability of implementation data regarding the surgical safety checklist (SSC) and to identify which factors influence actual implementation. METHODS: The study was a retrospective record-based evaluation in a regional network of nine Spanish hospitals, combined with a complementary direct-observation study that included a survey of the surgical teams' attitudes. SSC compliance and associated factors were assessed and compared in a retrospective sample of 280 operations and a concurrent sample of another 85 surgical interventions. RESULTS: In the retrospective evaluation the SSC was present in 83.1 % of cases, fully completed in 28.4 %, with 69.3 % of all possible items checked. The concurrent direct-observation study showed that recorded compliance was unreliable (κ < 0.13 for all items) and significantly higher (p < 0.001) than actual compliance. Over-registration occurred across hospitals and surgical specialties. Factors associated with recorded compliance included hospital size, surgical specialty, and the use of an electronic format. In actual (direct-observation) compliance, a positive attitude on the part of the surgeon is an overriding significant factor (OR 12.8), along with using the electronic format, which is consistently and positively associated with recorded compliance but negatively related to actual compliance. CONCLUSIONS: Recorded SSC compliance may be widely unreliable and higher than actual compliance, particularly when recording is facilitated by using an electronic format. A positive attitude on the part of the surgical team, particularly surgeons, is associated with actual compliance. Effective use of the SSC is a far more complex adaptive process than the usual mandatory strategy.

ABSTRACT

Temperatures in tropical regions are estimated to have increased by 3° to 5°C, compared with Late Paleocene values, during the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM, 56.3 million years ago) event. We investigated the tropical forest response to this rapid warming by evaluating the palynological record of three stratigraphic sections in eastern Colombia and western Venezuela. We observed a rapid and distinct increase in plant diversity and origination rates, with a set of new taxa, mostly angiosperms, added to the existing stock of low-diversity Paleocene flora. There is no evidence for enhanced aridity in the northern Neotropics. The tropical rainforest was able to persist under elevated temperatures and high levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide, in contrast to speculations that tropical ecosystems were severely compromised by heat stress.

ABSTRACT

Se presentan los resultados obtenidos en 7 pacientes con Psoriasis en placas, algunas localizadas y otras generalizadas, recalcitrantes a diversos medicamentos, en los cuales se instaura tratamiento a base de sesiones de Ultrasonido de 10 minutos de duración, 2 a 3 veces por semana, aplicado directamente sobre las lesiones, previo uso de una mezcla de Pivalato de Flumetasona, Brea de Hulla y Acido Salicílico (Pomada), la noche anterior; observándose una remisión significativa del cuadro clínico, en contraposición con lesiones tratadas solamente con el medicamento. Se presenta esta modalidad terapéutica, como una posible alternativa para esta patología de tan difícil y variable tratamiento
