ABSTRACT

Purpose: This pilot study implemented Creating Opportunities for Personal Empowerment (COPE), a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) intervention, in the perioperative care of patients with advanced heart failure awaiting left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation. Methods: Using a quasi-experimental study design, the patients were screened for anxiety and depression using the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) screening tools. If patients scored 5 or greater on either tool, they received COPE. Patients were re-evaluated following intervention. Results: Average scores for depression and anxiety symptoms pre-intervention were 10.6 and 10.2, respectively. Post intervention, scores decreased to an average of 5.4 and 3.2, respectively. Qualitative data suggests that they felt the intervention was helpful. Conclusion: Results show that it is possible to implement a multi-session CBT intervention in this population. The improvements in the severity of depression and anxiety symptoms in the five participants with LVAD is interesting and needs to be verified in a study with a larger sample size. ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: This cross-sectional study focuses on assessing factors related to role socialization of new NPs. ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this pilot project was to establish an interprofessional collaborative process for college students treated with prescribed exercise to manage depression. DESIGN AND METHODS: Program evaluation of this pilot project was a pretest/posttest design. Participants who were prescribed exercise as a treatment for depression were referred to the campus wellness coaching program. Baseline and follow-up data included Patient Health Questionnaire-9 scores and qualitative reports. FINDINGS: The project demonstrated the feasibility and benefits of an interprofessional collaborative process for facilitating prescribed exercise in the treatment of college depression. PRACTICE IMPLICATION: Continued use of this established process might help to reduce the burden of college depression.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this article is to describe an immersion model implemented in a doctor of nursing practice program with the goal of engaging students and optimizing learning. DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT: The immersion model was designed to support learners in an online doctor of nursing practice program to promote self-direction and active involvement in diagnosing, planning, implementing, and evaluating their own learning. The Community of Inquiry framework, based on learning and teaching theory, was used in developing this immersion model. OUTCOME: Students expressed positive opinions about immersion. Students valued simulation and skills practice, peer interaction, engagement with faculty, and the leadership colloquium. Faculty reported value in having group advising meetings and in collaborating across specialty tracks for skills laboratory experiences. CONCLUSION: The immersion model has enhanced student engagement and helped optimize learning outcomes. Students and faculty found the use of the immersion model to be beneficial for practicing skills, use of simulated learning experiences, and student advising.

ABSTRACT

Delirium superimposed on dementia is an acute medical illness that is difficult to diagnose because of the similarities of the symptoms to dementia. Delirium can contribute to the suffering of the patient as well as the family and caregiver. An initial holistic assessment of the patient is critical in establishing the cognitive baseline symptoms of delirium. Prevention of delirium can be assisted by ongoing reassessment of the patient for symptoms of delirium. The goal of treatment is to treat the underlying cause of the delirium.
