ABSTRACT

The present investigation explores the different pathways for development of waste tea residue carbon dots (WTR-CDs) loading into hydrogel matrix for WTR-CDs releasing probe. Fluorescent WTR-CDs incorporated into hydrogel matrix were synthesized by valorisation of kitchen waste tea by simple carbonization method (λem = 450 nm, ΦWTR-CDs =18.45 %). Biopolymeric alginate-based hydrogel beads (HB-Alg) were prepared by simple extrusion method. Three routes (ex-situ/in-situ) were employed for loading of WTR-CDs into hydrogel matrix. Successful synthesis of WTR-CDs and its loading into hydrogel matrix was confirmed via various characterization techniques. Developed protocol was employed for stimuli-responsive cumulative release of WTR-CDs study (pH = 3.0, 7.4, 9.0) was monitored over 7 days. Results suggests that, the HB-Alg@WTR-CDs-A system with in-situ loaded WTR-CDs have sustained release due to ionic interaction of WTR-CDs with crosslinked polymer network, whereas in HB-Alg@WTR-CDs-B, WTR-CDs loaded in wet-beads having burst release in which loosely bound WTR-CDs into hydrogel cavities releases rapidly. While, in case of HB-Alg@WTR-CDs-C, lowest release was observed due to weakly surface bound WTR-CDs, low loading and shrinkage of pores into dry-beads. Radical scavenging activity was studied and shown antioxidant properties of WTR-Powder, WTR-CDs and HB-Alg@WTR-CDs-A,B,C. Cytotoxicity of all systems was checked via CAM assay and significant growth in blood vascularization with no loss of chick embryo confirming the released WTR-CDs are biocompatible. Successful investigation and summarization of results ensure that, waste-valorisation, simple, sustainable, and smart hydrogel systems with different routes of WTR-CDs loading have opened a window to understand the mechanistic pathways in release behaviour. This robust approach for improvement of smarter and biocompatible materials can be fruitfully applicable in advanced, controlled and stimuli responsive delivery probes.

ABSTRACT

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive, age-related neurodegenerative disease. The disease is characterized by the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra, pars compacta of the midbrain. Pramipexole (PPX) is a novel drug used for the treatment of PD. It has a high affinity for the dopamine (DA) D2 receptor subfamily and acts as a targeted mitochondrial antioxidant. It is less effective in the treatment of PD due to its short half-life, highly inconvenient dosing schedule, and long-term side effects. In recent years, PPX-loaded nanoformulations have been actively reported to overcome these limitations. In the current study, we focused on increasing the effectiveness of PPX by minimizing the dosing frequency and improving the treatment strategy for PD. Herein, we report the synthesis of biodegradable polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-capped copper oxide nanoparticles (PVP-CuO NPs), followed by PPX anchoring on the surface of the PVP-CuO NPs (PPX-PVP-CuO NC), in a simple and inexpensive method. The newly formulated PPX-PVP-CuO NC complex was analyzed for its chemical and physical properties. The PPX-PVP-CuO NC was tested to protect against rotenone (RT)-induced toxicity in the Drosophila PD model. The in vivo studies using the RT-induced Drosophila PD model showed significant changes in negative geotaxis behavior and the level of DA and acetylcholinesterase. In addition, oxidative stress markers such as glutathione-S-transferase, total glutathione, thiobarbituric acid reactive species, and protein carbonyl content showed significant amelioration. The positive changes of PPX-PVP-CuO NC treatment in behavior, neurotransmitter level, and antioxidant level suggest its potential role in mitigating the PD phenotype. The formulation can be used for treatment or pharmacological intervention against PD.

ABSTRACT

Chinese star anise is an anise-scented star-shaped fruit of the evergreen Illicium verum tree. It is generally used as a spice and folk medicine for treating digestive illness. Chinese star anise may be adulterated with Japanese star anise (fruit of Illicium anisatum tree with similar morphology to the former), containing high content of toxic anisatin leading to severe physical disorders. In this work, a UHPLC-MS/MS method has been developed to determine three quality markers (quercetin, kaempferol, and luteolin) and toxicity marker (anisatin) of star anise using quercetin-d3, an exogenous heavy isotopic compound, as internal standard. Chromatographic separation of quality and toxicity marker compounds was achieved using a T3 column within two minutes. The method was successfully developed, validated, and used to quantify the multiple marker compounds in both botanical reference materials and star anise samples. This method can be used for quality control and assessment of Chinese star anise products.

ABSTRACT

Background: Cervical cancer is a public health problem in India due to weak national screening policy compounded by lack of resources including scarcity of trained personnel to carry out community-based screening program. Para medical professionals (PMPs) are closely related to women in local communities. Hence, training PMPs by incorporating novel technology and reduced time duration to achieve adequate competence in screening is an area underutilized and needs to be explored. Materials and methods: A pilot cross sectional analytical study was conducted at a tertiary referral cancer center using a shorter version of educational intervention of 2 weeks duration (EI2W) involving PMPs. Pre- and post-training assessment of knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) was done using questionnaires consisting of 5 domains viz. awareness of cervical cancer, awareness of cervical pre-cancer, practical screening methodology (practice oriented), data management and aspects of human papilloma virus (HPV). Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used for comparison and the degree of change was measured using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). A p value of <0.05 was considered significant. Results: 118 PMPs were included. There was a significant improvement in scores of all domains (except cervical pre-cancer domain), following introduction of EI2W. Knowledge scores, post EI2W was better in Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) than other participants. Awareness regarding cervical cancer was higher with more years of experience. The KAP analysis showed excellent interrater reliability in the practice 0.726 (0.649-0.792) followed by knowledge domain 0.711 (0.626-0.783). Conclusion: EI2W was effective in significantly improving the competence of PMPs, thus reducing human resource constraints in cervical cancer prevention and elimination.

ABSTRACT

Low-grade serous carcinoma (LGSC) is a rare histologic subtype of ovarian cancer. We present detailed management of 15 cases of advanced LGSC from a tertiary cancer center of India. Fifteen cases of advanced LGSC who underwent cytoreductive surgery (CRS) were analyzed from a prospectively maintained database. Baseline demographic characteristics, surgical details, and chemotherapy details were recorded. Descriptive statistics were summarized, and progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were estimated. The median age was 37 years. Nine patients had received NACT. All cases were FIGO stage III. Mean PCI was 15. Eleven patients had a completeness of cytoreduction score of 0-1. The median surgical time was 7.5 h; nine patients required multiple gastrointestinal resections. Median blood loss was 2500 ml. Median postoperative ventilation, ICU stay, and hospital stays were 1, 2, and 16 days, respectively. One patient had a grade III complication. Four patients received adjuvant chemotherapy. There was no postoperative mortality at the end of 90 days of surgery. All the patients except one were offered hormonal maintenance therapy. At a median follow-up of 43 months, 4 patients were disease-free, 9 had a recurrence, one died of disease progression, and one was lost to follow-up. Most recurrences were locoregional in the peritoneal cavity or pelvis. Four-year OS and PFS were 71.8% and 29.7%, respectively. Advanced LGSCs occur mostly in young premenopausal women with favorable oncologic outcomes. Optimal CRS is the mainstay of treatment. Relative chemo-resistance and hormone receptor positivity provide an excellent therapeutic opportunity for endocrine therapy.

Objectives: Dental implants play a significant role in functional rehabilitation of the oral cavity after debilitating jaw surgeries for oral cavity cancers followed by radiotherapy. Design: The meta-analysis was done using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review (PRISMA) guidelines published from January 1947 till August 2020. Twenty three articles consisting of 1246 participants with 4838 implants were included in our analysis. Results: The mean age of the included participants was 51.4 years. 2186 and 1685 implants were placed on irradiated and non-irradiated jaws and showed a success rate of 82.47% and 89.37% respectively. Correspondingly, publication bias of p value = 0.2129 and p-value = 0.6525 was found by Egger's and Begg's test respectively for pooled data of 16 studies. The implant success rate of 70.4% on maxillary bone and 94.5% were observed on mandibular bone. Timing of implant placement and its influence on survival rate have resulted in a 75.5% survival rate of dental implants when placed primarily in comparison with 87.7% on delayed placement. The waiting interval of 14 months in delayed implant placement has shown better results. Conclusion: Presence of radiotherapy does not play a significant role in the success rate of dental implants in oral cavity cancers. ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Pelvic irradiation leads to substantial dose to the pelvic girdle. However, bone density loss as a function of radiation therapy dose and time has not been investigated. This study was undertaken to evaluate such a dose-response relationship. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Women undergoing pelvic radiation therapy for cervix cancer within a phase 3 trial were included. The study necessitated 2 computed tomography imaging sets acquired at least 12 months apart in patients with no evidence of relapse. All images were transferred to the treatment planning system to determine radiation dose and Hounsfield unit (HU). Across the entire lumbopelvic region (lumbar 1-5 [L1-5] vertebrae, pubic symphysis, femur, acetabulum, greater trochanter, and anterior-superior iliac spine) multiple regions were defined to measure radiation therapy dose and HU. Bone health was categorized as normal if >130 HU, osteopenic at 110 to 130 HU, and osteoporotic <110 HU at baseline and follow-up. Univariate analysis was performed to test the effect of various factors on HU. Further interaction among radiation therapy dose, time, and HU was assessed using a linear mixed model. RESULTS: Overall, 132 of 300 patients were eligible. The median age was 49 (42-56) years. With a prescription dose of 50 Gy, the L1 and L2 vertebrae received a median dose of 1.2 and 4 Gy, respectively, and L3-5 received 10 to 50 Gy. At 24 months, median HU loss at L4-5 was 45 HU (interquartile range, 34-77 HU). Out of the 132 patients, at baseline 96% had normal bone health. However, at the last follow-up, 3% of patients had normal bone health, 12% developed osteopenia, and 85% developed osteoporosis (P < .001). There were no patient- or treatment-related factors predicted for HU loss on univariate analysis. HU loss >60 to 70 was observed at >45 Gy at L5 vertebra (60-70 HU, P < .02) and >15 Gy at L4 vertebra (33 HU; P = .04). CONCLUSIONS: Dose-response relationship is observed between radiation dose and bone mineral density loss. Prospective studies are needed to corroborate these observations and design future interventions.

ABSTRACT

The proximal humerus is a common location for both primary benign and malignant bone tumors and may require sacrificing deltoid muscles, axillary nerve and/or rotator cuff along with proximal humerus resection. Thus, post operatively shoulder movements are restricted. The main goals of reconstruction are to maintain a stable shoulder so that the function of elbow and hand can be optimized. Various reconstruction options are available after proximal humerus resection. We present our experience in using implant-cement spacers as a primary reconstruction option for limb salvage in the primary tumors of proximal humerus. All cases were retrieved from our prospectively maintained surgical database. 142 patients (96 males and 46 females) with a median age of 17.5 years (3-70 years) were operated with implant cement spacer between January 2006 and April 2019. Median follow up was 34 months (1-174 months). Functional outcome of the surgery was assessed in survivors by Musculoskeletal Tumor Society score (MSTS). Implant survival was assessed by Kaplan Meier analysis and competing risk analysis. On last follow up, out of 142 cases, 81 patients had died, 54 are alive and seven were lost to follow up. 18(13%) patients underwent revision surgery for symptomatic proximal migration, implant failure or infection. Four (2.8%) patients underwent forequarter amputation for local recurrence. The five years implant survival (IS) by Kaplan Meier analysis was 79.6% and as per competing risk analysis, the chances of implant revision are 12% and 18% at five and ten years respectively. Mean MSTS score in survivors was 71% (60-80%). Implant cement spacer is a cost-effective alternative for reconstruction of proximal humerus with revision rates and function comparable to other reconstructions in cases where deltoid, axillary nerve and/or rotator cuff are excised.

Background Presence of extramural venous invasion (EMVI) is a poor prognostic factor for rectal cancer as per literature. However, India-specific data are lacking. Aim The aim of the study is to determine the prognostic significance of EMVI in locally advanced rectal cancer on baseline MRI. Materials and Methods We retrospectively reviewed 117 MRIs of operable non-metastatic locally advanced rectal cancers in a tertiary cancer institute. Three dedicated oncoradiologists determined presence or absence of EMVI, and its length and thickness, in consensus. These patients were treated as per standard institutional protocols and followed up for a median period of 37 months (range: 2-71 months). Kaplan-Meier curves (95% CI) were used to determine disease-free survival (DFS), distant-metastases free survival (DMFS), and overall survival (OS). Univariate analysis was performed by comparing groups with log-rank test. Results EMVI positive cases were 34/114 (29%). More EMVI-positive cases developed distant metastasis compared with EMVI-negative cases (14/34-41% vs. 22/83-26%). The difference, however, was not statistically significant ( p = 0.146). After excluding signet-ring cell cancers ( n = 14), EMVI showed significant correlation with DMFS ( p = 0.046), but not with DFS or OS. The median thickness and length of EMVI was 6 and 14 mm, respectively in patients who developed distant metastasis, as compared with 5 and 11 mm in those who did not, although this difference was not statistically significant. Conclusion EMVI is a predictor of distant metastasis in locally advanced non-metastatic, non-signet ring cell rectal cancers. EMVI can be considered another high-risk feature to predict distant metastasis.

ABSTRACT

Primary spinal extradural Ewing's sarcoma/primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) is rare malignant tumor of childhood and early adulthood. The World Health Organization classifies PNET as an undifferentiated round cell tumor arising from primitive neuroepithelial cell. It can be central or peripheral PNET depending on site of presentation. Usually, the presenting symptoms are chronic back pain and myelopathy. Overall prognosis and survival are dismal in spite of total surgical resection and adjuvant therapy. Because of the rarity and malignant behavior, definite management of spinal PNET has never been described. After review of medical record at Acharaya Vinoba Bhave Rural Hospital, Sawangi, India, we identified four patients of spinal PNET and were included in our study. Age at diagnosis ranging from 15 to 26 years old with mean age of 20 years old. All four cases were epidural in location, two of which were of Askin type tumor with spinal cord compression. Rural population with low literacy and financial constraints were the key reasons of late presentations at our hospital. Counseling and proper education regarding the disease are a must for early case detection and early treatment of those living in rural areas and suffers from financial constraints. Due to rarity of the disease and its poor prognosis, a well-organized multicentric controlled trial is required to formulate a standard guidelines in the management of this disease.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The study is an audit of reporting dose and volume specifications as per the ICRU 58 for MUPIT-based interstitial brachytherapy in gynecological cancers. Correlation between total reference air kerma (TRAK) and isodose surface was also evaluated to understand the intensity of treatment in interstitial brachytherapy. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Forty-two patients underwent HDR MUPIT-based interstitial brachytherapy 20 Gy in five fractions after EBRT during 2017-2019. Treated volume, high and low-dose regions, mean central dose, Dose Homogeneity Index (DHI), organ at risk doses, and TRAK values were computed. RESULTS: High-dose regions V150 mean was 12.4 cc and V200 was 4.58 cc; and low-dose region was 75.92 cc. The mean treated volume was 59.8 cc. The mean central dose was 3.7 Gy. DHI was 79%. The mean D2cm3 bladder and rectum were 2.9 Gy and 2.8 Gy. The mean TRAK was 0.16 cGy per fraction per hour at 1 m. TRAK values showed significant correlation with various isodose volumes (TRAK and V100: r = 0.943 p < 0.0005; and TRAK and V50: r = 0.953; p < 0.0005). A positive correlation was observed between TRAK and the number of needles (r = 0.746; p < 0.0005). At a median followup of 16 months, 4 of 42 patients (9.5%) had local recurrences. CONCLUSIONS: Our study shows compliance with ICRU 58 recommendations along with certain deviations. Local recurrence rate is acceptable. TRAK shows correlation with surface isodose in MUPIT-based brachytherapy and should to be evaluated in future studies.

BACKGROUND: The overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS) and complications after liver resections is unsatisfactory. Cancer-related malnutrition and inflammation have an effect on survival but not studied/not clear on postoperative complications. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed prospectively maintained database of 309 patients. The outcome variables included complications in terms of Clavien-Dindo (CD) Score, OS and DFS; We studied effect of preoperative albumin globulin ratio (AGR), neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and aspartate transaminase to platelet ratio index (APRI) and dynamic change from pre-operative to postoperative value (Delta-AGR, Delta-NLR, Delta-PLR and Delta-APRI) on complications, OS and DFS. RESULTS: Total 98 patients (31.71%) had postoperative complications. Fifty patients had CD 1 & 2 and 35 (11.33%) had CD 3 & 4, and 13 (4.12%) had mortality (CD 5). Low AGR, high NLR, high PLR and high Delta-AGR and high Delta-APRI predicted increased major complications. Preoperative high NLR predicted worse OS and low AGR predicted worse OS and DFS. Delta-APRI showed trends towards worse OS and DFS. CONCLUSION: These serum inflammatory markers can predict immediate postoperative complications. Preoperative AGR and preoperative NLR can predict survival after liver resections. High Delta-AGR, which is a new entity, is predicting more postoperative complications and needs further detailed studies.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To assess the response of chemotherapy on the primary tumor, compare it with the response in retroperitoneal disease, and study factors associated with pathological complete response. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective audit of all high inguinal orchidectomies (HIOs) performed after chemotherapy between 2012 and 2019 at a tertiary cancer center in India. Patient characteristics and histopathological response were extracted from electronic medical records, and predictors of testicular disease response were assessed. RESULTS: Of the 260 retroperitoneal lymph node dissections (RPLNDs) performed in the study period, 37 HIOs (14.23%) were carried out after chemotherapy. The median age of presentation was 28 years (16-41). Histopathology was divided into a viable tumor, mature teratoma, and necrosis/scarring. Residual disease was seen in 17 RPLND (46.0%) and 18 HIO (48.6%) specimens respectively. Of these 18, three patients had a residual viable tumor in the testis, and the remaining had a mature teratoma. Clinico-radiological assessment showed an average reduction of 61% in testicular disease size following chemotherapy. On orchidectomy histopathological assessment, the median tumor size was 9, 4, and 1.5 cm in specimens with a viable tumor, mature teratoma, and necrosis/scarring, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: A low threshold for upfront chemotherapy in patients with a high disease burden may be considered as tumors within the testis respond to chemotherapy in more than half of the patients. Discordance rates of residual cancer in RPLND and HIO specimens exist but post-chemotherapy tumor size in testis correlates with the presence of a residual viable tumor.

ABSTRACT

Novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), turned out to be a global pandemic with unstoppable morbidity and mortality rate. However, till date there is no effective treatment found against SARS-CoV-2. We report on the major in-depth molecular and docking analysis by using antiretroviral (Lopinavir and ritonavir), antimalarial (Hydroxychloroquine), antibiotics (Azithromycin), and dietary supplements (Vitamin C and E) to provide new insight into drug repurposing molecular events involved in SARS-CoV-2. We constructed three drug-target-pathways-disease networks to predict the targets and drugs interactions as well as important pathways involved in SARS-CoV-2. The results suggested that by using the combination of Lopinavir, Ritonavir along with Hydroxychloroquine and Vitamin C may turned out to be the effective line of treatment for SARS-CoV-2 as it shows the involvement of PARP-1, MAPK-8, EGFR, PRKCB, PTGS-2, and BCL-2. Gene ontology biological process analysis further confirmed multiple viral infection-related processes (P < 0.001), including viral life cycle, modulation by virus, C-C chemokine receptor activity, and platelet activation. KEGG pathway analysis involves multiple pathways (P < 0.05), including FoxO, GnRH, ErbB, Neurotrophin, Toll-like receptor, IL-17, TNF, Insulin, HIF-1, JAK-STAT, Estrogen, NF-kappa, Chemokine, VEGF, and Thyroid hormone signaling pathway in SARS-CoV-2. Docking study was carried out to predict the molecular mechanism Thus, the potential drug combinations could reduce viral infectivity, viral replication, and abnormal host inflammatory responses and may be useful for multi-target drugs against SARS-CoV-2.

ABSTRACT

COVID-19 has more impact on cancer patients due to their immune compromised status. In this study, we tried to understand the impact of cancer patients afflicted with COVID-19 in the physical, emotional, vocational, financial and social domains. The patient caregivers' problems were also assessed. The investigator tailored the tool and content validity was done by the experts. Total samples were 50 and convenient sampling was used. Descriptive statistics were used and the Shapiro-Wilk's test was used for normalcy of the variables. The major findings were that the majority belonged to male population with an average annual salary. The diagnosis was hematolymphoid as the main focus compared to breast, bone, gynaecological, gastrointestinal, genitourinary and others. Patients who were receiving chemotherapy were in the majority when compared to radiation, Palliation and surgery. In the physical domain, patients experienced fatigue as a major problem most probably due to the treatment of chemotherapy. The other major problems were loss of smell, breathlessness and loss of appetite. Skin pigmentations were not experienced. In the emotional domain, the major problem was the depression they experienced during COVID-19. In the social domain, financial problems was the most important aspect and access to medication acquirement and transport during the pandemic and job securities were the other problems. Care givers felt social distancing to be a major aspect while looking after patients. They were very uncertain about the prognosis of COVID-19. The Middle age group had more emotional problems.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Evidence for performing contralateral neck dissection (CND) of recurrent oral cavity squamous cell cancers (OCSCC) is lacking. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This is a retrospective study of 78 consecutive OCSCC having ipsilateral recurrence recorded over five years. We screened 1658 OCSCC patients and selected those patients who underwent CND as part of treatment for ipsilateral recurrence. RESULTS: The median disease-free interval was 32 months. Incidence of contralateral nodal metastasis (CNM) in recurrent OCSCC was 23.1% and of which 14% were occult. The factor significantly influencing CNM was the depth of invasion (DOI) > 10 mm (p < 0.01). In our study, imaging had suboptimal PPV (33%) while it had high NPV (88%) in diagnosing nodal metastasis in recurrent OCSCC. CONCLUSION: DOI is the most important factor predicting CNM in case of ipsilateral primary recurrence. PET-CECT has a high NPV and contralateral neck should be addressed in case of tumours with higher DOI.

ABSTRACT

We recruited 69 consecutive patients with oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) between January 2017 and January 2019 for this study. All patients underwent up-front surgery followed by adjuvant radio- and/or chemotherapy as indicated. Pre-operative serum levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and cell-free chromatin (cfCh) were estimated by ELISA and post-operative histopathological features were recorded. CRP levels were significantly associated with poor histopathological features, advanced stage, bone erosion, extracapsular spread and pathological nodal status. CRP levels were not associated with survival. CfCh levels were significantly associated with bone erosion and neck nodes and patients with higher cfCh levels had significantly poor overall survival.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Hip preserving (intra-articular) resections for proximal femur sarcoma have better function compared to peri-acetabular (extra-articular) resections, which are more complex and morbid. But, do intra-articular resections in selected cases with intra-articular disease provide adequate local control? METHOD: Extra-articular resection or intra-articular resection in cases without pathologic fracture or away from joint/capsule was classified as a planned safe margin (SM). Circumferential removal of labrum without acetabular resection in cases without gross joint contamination was classified as planned close margins (CM). We analyzed local recurrence-free survival (LRFS) (death as a competing event) for 86 proximal femur resections (SM = 55, CM = 31). RESULTS: The 5 years LRFS was 84% (n = 6/55, 10%) in the SM group and 67% (n = 4/31, 12%) in the CM group. There was no worsening of local recurrence (LR) in the CM group (subdistribution hazard [sH] = 0.69; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.21-2.29; P = .56). Poor chemotherapy-induced necrosis predicted worse LR (sH = 0.1; 95% CI, 0.01-0.8; P = .03). Overall survival was 16% (SE 8%) at 5 years with LR vs 64% (SE 7%) without LR (P = .0076). CONCLUSION: In proximal femur sarcomas with potential for involvement of the hip joint, a CM in selected cases did not worsen LR; providing an option for avoiding additional morbidity with extra-articular resections.

ABSTRACT

Objectives Craniovertebral junction (CVJ) is a unique, mobile and complicated component of our spine which necessitates specific study pertaining to its structure as well as pathologies. This study aims to report the normative data detailing the CVJ anatomy among the rural population of Central India which would help us in understanding the joint dynamics. Materials and Methods A retrospective observational study was undertaken in the Department of Neurosurgery and Radiology, Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Sewagram, Maharashtra, from December 2018 to May 2019. A total of 255 head injury patients with a normal CT brain cervical spine were included in this study. Anterior and posterior atlantodental interval (AADI/PADI), clivus length (CL), foramen magnum diameter (FMD), Boogard's and basal angle (BOO & BA) were measured and analyzed. Statistical Analysis Statistical analysis was done using Microsoft Excel 2016. A web-based, open source application known as OpenEpi.com (version 3.01) was used for applying unpaired t -test. Results This study had a mean age of 42.9 years. The difference in mean value of AADI between male and female population was not found to be statistically significant, while in case of PADI, CL, FMD, BOO and BA, it was found to be significant ( p < 0.05). On comparison of cases with age ≤ 20 years and > 20 years, we found the difference in values of ADI, CL and FMD to be statistically significant ( p < 0.05). Conclusion Although there are some similarities, namely, AADI measurements as compared with other studies, there are differences in cutoff values of other parameters. Being a major draining reference center for rural population in India, this data can be extrapolated to a similar population for reference.
