ABSTRACT

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), also known as bone marrow transplantation, has curative potential for various hematologic malignancies but is associated with risks such as graft-versus-host disease (GvHD), severe bloodstream infection, viral pneumonia, idiopathic pneumonia syndrome (IPS), lung fibrosis, and sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS), which severely deteriorate clinical outcomes and limit the wide application of HSCT. Recent research has provided important insights into the effects of gut microbiota and oxidative stress (OS) on HSCT complications. Therefore, based on recent studies, we describe intestinal dysbiosis and OS in patients with HSCT and review recent molecular findings underlying the causal relationships of gut microbiota, OS, and transplant-related complications, focusing particularly on the involvement of gut microbiota-mediated OS in postengraftment complications. Also, we discuss the use of antioxidative and anti-inflammatory probiotics to manipulate gut microbiota and OS, which have been associated with promising effects in improving HSCT outcomes.

ABSTRACT

Calcium citrate, a high-end daily calcium supplement, whose irregular particle morphology leads to poor powder properties, limited food functions, and paste-like suspension problems. This study prepared the spherical calcium citrate by investigating four aspects of this reactive process: side reaction, crystallization, agglomeration, and fragmentation. Consequently, a concentration-dependent spherulitic growth operating space was established, in which reactive crystallization followed the second-category spherulitic growth mechanism depending on supersaturation. Besides, the temperature, stirring rate, and residence time were critical parameters for regulating the spherulite shape and size. These spherulites exhibited improved flowability and tabletability as calcium fortification ingredient, it also had a smoother and more pleasant texture. Furthermore, the micronized spherical powder showed high suspension stability as a calcium supplement during brewing. These spherical particles did not form paste-like suspension. Finally, the success of the scale-up experiments in semi-batch mode raised the possibility of industrialization of spherical calcium citrate.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Follicular lymphoma (FL), a common type of indolent lymphoma, carries markers of the germinal center, and the rearrangement of the BCL-2 gene is regarded as an initiating event and a hallmark of the neoplasm. When FL has marginal zone differentiation, some marginal zone features are carried by the neoplasm. CASE SUMMARY: A 54-year-old male with lymphadenopathy, splenomegaly and hyperlymphocytosis was diagnosed with FL with marginal zone differentiation. The tumor demonstrated different features in the bone marrow (BM) compared with the follicle of the lymph node (LN). Some component of the neoplasm mimicked marginal zone lymphoma, such as infiltrating the marginal zone of the LN, displaying a monocytoid shape and lacking the expression of CD10 in the BM. The diagnosis of FL was made due to the concurrent detection of BCL-2 rearrangement in the LN and BM. CONCLUSION: Discordant pathological features in LN and BM could mislead diagnosis. When clinical and pathological manifestations are confusing in diagnosis, typical genetic abnormalities are decisive.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Sirt7, as one of the seven Sirtuin family members, which plays distinct roles in cancer progression, is bringing emerging attention due to its oncogenic characteristic. The expression of Sirt7 in breast cancer remained unclear, and the aim of this study was to elucidate its role in breast cancer. METHODS: A total of 188 cases included in this study were immunohistochemically evaluated for Sirt7, and western blot assay was used to assess its expression in breast cell lines as well as 36 breast cancer tissues and 36 paired non-cancerous tissues. RESULTS: Upregulation of Sirt7 was found in breast cancer cell lines and breast cancer tissues (P < 0.001) by western blot analysis. Sirt7 was highly expressed in breast cancer tissue samples (67.8%) compared to adjacent normal breast tissues (31.8%) by immunohistochemical assay. It was also observed that the high expression level of Sirt7 was significantly correlated with high histological grade (P = 0.039) and negatively related to overall survival (P = 0.006). Sirt7 proved to be an independent prognostic factor (P = 0.007) in breast cancer. CONCLUSIONS: Sirt7 expression was implicated with high histological grade and independently predicted poor clinical outcome in patients with breast cancer, suggesting that Sirt7 might play a role in the malignant progression of breast cancer.

ABSTRACT

Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is one type of breast cancer (BC), which is defined as negative for estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR) and human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (Her2). Its origins and development seem to be elusive. And for now, drugs like tamoxifen or trastuzumab which specifically apply to ER, PR or Her2 positive BC seem unforeseeable in TNBC clinical treatment. Due to its extreme malignancy, high recurrence rate and poor prognosis, a lot of work on the research of TNBC is needed. This review aims to summarize the latest findings in TNBC in risk factors, possible therapeutic targets and possible prognostic makers.
