ABSTRACT

An Argentinian Dogo which suffered from anorexia, lymphadenopathy, cachexia and paresis of the hind limbs was diagnosed with trypanosomiasis in Argentina in 2013. In this study, we describe the clinical profile and its evolution as well as the molecular method employed to identify and quantify Trypanosoma evansi.

ABSTRACT

In the winter of 2000, a greater than 80% reduction in the guanaco population located in Cabo Dos Bahi;as Wildlife Reserve, Chubut, Argentina, was evident due to massive mortality attributed to starvation. Twelve guanacos were necropsied and samples were analyzed at the Parasitology Laboratory of Facultad de Ciencias Veterinarias, Universidad Nacional del Litoral. Fecal analysis revealed developmental stages of Nematodirus sp., Marshallagia sp., Trichuris sp. and Eimeria spp. Histopathological analysis showed the presence of Sarcocystis sp. in muscle and fascia cysts. Other parasites recovered included Dictyocaulus filaria, Trichuris tenuis and Moniezia expansa. Of these, D. filaria and M. expansa possibly reflect interactions with domestic sheep. This is the first time that T. tenuis has been reported in guanacos.

ABSTRACT

The charts of 136 patients presenting with juvenile chronic arthritis and antinuclear antibodies were reviewed. Mean age at onset was 3.6 yrs and 120 patients were females. Twenty-one patients presented with the polyarticular type of the disease from onset. Among them, 3 had polyarthritis with presence of rheumatoid factors. During the first year of follow-up, 40% of the pauciarticular forms became polyarticular. They may be subdivided into extended pauciarticular (5 to 9 arthritis = 26% of cases) or polyarticular (greater than 9 arthritis = 15% of cases) forms. The ocular involvement, present in 50 patients, preceded the articular manifestations in 5 cases (for a maximum of 4 years) whereas it followed in 30 cases (maximum delay of 14 years). Inflammatory articular involvement is not always correlated with the risk of ocular involvement. Long-term articular prognosis is generally fair. Only 15 children present with clearcut functional handicaps, of whom 4 are requiring the help of a third person.

ABSTRACT

Absence of closure of the abdominal wound following reoperation for severe peritonitis is an additional therapeutic technique in dealing with peritoneal infection. However, this technique poses the problem of covering the loops of the small intestine in order to avoid fistulisation in the exposed viscera. The loops are initially protected by a "wound protector" or covered with a plate of polyurethane foam. Secondarily, when the peritoneal cavity is clean, the open wound is converted to an incisional hernia by a thin dermo-epidermal graft in strips, applied to the granulation tissue. This technique is effective and would seem to be simpler than detachments, plasties and relieving incisions.

ABSTRACT

A cytologic grading method of fine needle aspiration smears has been applied to 192 cases of breast carcinoma. Grade I defines well differenciated carcinoma, grade II pleioporphic tumor cells, grade III anaplastic carcinoma. Special attention was given to the unfavorable forms of tumors (grade III). The cytologic grading was correlated with the NMT clinical classification, with the notion of acute exacerbation and with axillary nodes involvement. The correlation of grading with the clinical course of the disease was evaluated after a twelve months follow up. In 4% of patients classified in grade I, 8% of grade II and 58% of grade III, metastases, local recurrence or death had occurred within one year. The contribution of grading to the identification of fast growing tumors is discussed.

ABSTRACT

The authors report their experience of 30 mesenterico-caval anastomoses with prosthetic interposition according to Drapanas's technic. From the point of view of the operative indications, they have never carried out a prophylactic operation. In 19 cases, the operation was carried out as an emergency for inefficacy of the medical treatment. In 11 cases, a cold operation was performed, either to prevent eventual hemorrhagic recurrence (8 cases) or for chronic ascites (3 cases). Half the patients belonged to group C with a poor surgical risk. There was only one case of post-operative thrombosis due to a technical error, and two cases of secondary thrombosis. The overall mortality was 60%. But when the patient was of group A or B the mortality was only 20%. The survivors are those in whom the operation was rapid and the blood loss minimal. To conclude, the authors the necessity of better selection of patients, and rapid operation without bleeding.

ABSTRACT

The authors report 70 cases of severe acute generalise peritonitis treated during the immediate postoperative periode by peritoneal irrigation-lavage using iodinated polyvinyl-pyrrolidone for 16 days. All of the patients were hospitalised in an intensive care unit because of septicaemia, respiratory distress, acute renal failure, etc. After an aetiological study of these cases of peritonitis, the technique of installation and surveillance and the complications of peritoneal irrigation-lavage are analysed. The results in this series confirm the efficacy of the technique as long as it is used from the outset, immediately following the onset of peritonitis.

ABSTRACT

Over the last 3 years, the authors restore intestinal continuity after ileo-colonic removal by end-to-side anastomosis according to Bloch's technic the colonic incision is made perpendicular to the peritoneal band. This type of anastomosis, in view of the mode of distribution of the colonic arterioles does not cause any loss of blood supply as is sometimes the case on the antemesocolic border of the incision when it is made on the band. The first results appear very encouraging as in the first thirty cases there was only one case of breakdown of sutures in the anastomosis. The latter was not due to the technic but to recutting of the ileum in an area with a poor blood supply.
