ABSTRACT

We denominate otohematoma to the blood stock in the pinna. It occurs by the broke of pinna drilling vessels. Its origin is traumatic. It is usual after soft but continuous hits, less often after hard and unique ones, and more less often bilateral forms like the case we present

ABSTRACT

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMT) of the larynx are uncommon lesions that easily may be misinterpreted as malignant epithelial or mesenchymal spindle cell neoplasms. When located in the upper airway, IMTs tend to be less aggressive, but have the potential for local invasion and recurrence. The authors describe a rare case of IMT in a 47 year old man, occurring in the vocal fold who underwent surgical treatment five times, because of its higher recurrence rate.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

The orbital cellulitis is an infection of the soft tissues located behind of the orbital setum. It is presented as a complication of an acute sinusitis although it can appear as consequence of other infectious processes. We present a series of 20 cases diagnosed and treated in our center of orbital cellulitis. We expose the diagnostic criteria that we have followed, as well as the complementary tests used and the different treatments both medical and surgical.

ABSTRACT

Nowadays due to the use of antibiotics the occurrence of a general complication of tonsillitis is extremely rare. Lemierre in 1936 throroughly described one of these events. We introduce a case of postanginal septicaemia detected in a previous healthy young woman. We also undertake a review of Lemierre's syndrome cases published within the last seven years in the English and Spanish literature, giving special attention to diagnostical methods and therapeutical strategies.

ABSTRACT

Metastatic lesions in temporal bone were rare in the past but are increasing, it seems, nowadays. We present the case of a women patient which first and only metastatic symptom was her peripheral facial paralysis. In our review of world literature of this topic only 148 published cases were found. Tumors more frequently spreading to temporal bone, in decreasing order of development, are those of the breast, lungs, kidney, stomach and prostate. Clinically these metastases become manifest by hypoacusy, buzzing ears, body unbalance, vertigo and facial palsy. The prognosis of these disorders are related to the serverity of the systemic disease.

ABSTRACT

The esthesioneuroblastoma is a very uncommon malignant growth arising from olfactory epithelium. Almost 400 cases have been published since its was first described. Owing to the meager figures of these series is not possible to drawn out conclusions in order to establish an unique protocol of treatment for this tumoral type. We present 2 cases diagnosed in our Department, each diversely treated and comment the results.

ABSTRACT

Lateral cranial teleradiography was carried out in 106 subjects, including obese and non-obese patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and obese and non-obese healthy snorers and controls. In the OSAS patients alone, the hyoid bone occupied an abnormally low position, which pushed the tongue into a more vertical position. OSAS patients had the most voluminous soft tissues, followed by simple snorers and controls. Soft tissue volume generally was related with obesity. The pharyngeal airway space was widest in controls, intermediate in snores and narrowest in OSAS patients, except in the hypopharynx, where airway dimensions were similar in all the patients studied.

ABSTRACT

A morphological study was made of the pharynx of 106 subjects, including obese and non-obese patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), obese and non-obese healthy snorers and controls. A CT scan was made of each subject and the luminal area was measured on all sections. The influence of obesity on airway size was determined. Airway lumina generally were narrower in patients with OSAS, of intermediate size in healthy snorers, and widest in controls. Luminal narrowing was the result of increased pharyngeal wall thickness and directly related to the degree of obesity. This pattern was evident throughout the pharynx, except for the hypopharynx, where the airway size was similar in all the patients studied.

ABSTRACT

Two cases of granular cell tumour in the tongue are presented One of them sitting in the free edge, the other one in the middle line. We consider clinic, histogenic characteristics and treatment as well Comments on the unusual presence of this tumor in the middle line of the tongue in a child.

ABSTRACT

A case of chondrome arising from the nasal septum, in a 42-year-old woman, is described. In spite of its benignity the prognostic is doubtful owing to its possible transformation in chondrosarcoma. The fundamentals of this onerous change are both clinical and anatomopathological, and are briefly discussed in the paper. Having in mind the spare figures of cases reported the AA. make a bibliographic survey mentioning 19 previous cases.

ABSTRACT

Otomycosis is a pathology relatively common in the auditory external canal, which incidence varies between 6-9% of external otitis cases. In the paper are presented the outcome of a prospective study comparing 3 antimycotic drugs (iodine-Povidone, Chlortrimazol and Ciclopiroxolamine) as well as some epidemiologic items (etiology, predisposition, clinical features) prevailing in the conurbation of Barcelona.
