ABSTRACT

Aedes aegypti is the main vector of dengue in the Americas and is also a transmitter of urban yellow fever arboviruses, Zika, and Chikungunya, all of which have substantial economic impacts on the affected countries. Through mathematical models, the influence of climatic factors on the oviposition of Ae. aegypti was determined. The data were collected in the city of Apucarana, Paraná State, using oviposition traps. Daily data were submitted to a negative binomial regression model (p < 0.05). The analyses were performed using the R statistical program to determine the climatic factors that most influenced oviposition. A Poisson regression showed that the variables temperature, atmospheric pressure, humidity, and precipitation significantly increased the number of eggs. However, using the semi-normal probability graph with a simulation envelope, it was determined that the Poisson regression model was not adequate to explain the relationships between the variables. Thus, a negative binomial regression model was used, which overcame the problem of overdispersion, and showed that only temperature affected the increase in the number of eggs, where an increase of 1 °C was expected to result in a 54.03% increase in the number of Ae. aegypti eggs.

ABSTRACT

This research aimed the performance evaluation of a structured bed reactor with different cycles of Intermittent Aeration (IA)(SBRRIA) in the municipal sewage treatment and the verification of the effect of IA cycles on the total nitrogen (TN) removal and organic matter (COD). Three IA cycles were evaluated: phase I (4 h AE (aeration on) - 2 h NA (aeration off)); II (2 h AE-1 h NA) and III (2 h AE-2 h NA), with Hydraulic Retention Time of 16 h. The best nitrogen removal was obtained during phase II, with the lowest non-aeration time: efficiency of nitrification, denitrification, TN and COD removal of 80 ± 15%, 82 ± 12%, 67 ± 6% and 94 ± 7%, respectively. The mean cell residence time was 19, 26 and 33 d in phases I, II and III, respectively. The statistical analysis applied to the AE/NA profiles showed that the time of AE and NA in the cycles did not influence nitrogen and organic matter removal. Thus, this indicates the recirculation and the gradient formed in the support material facilitate the process of Simultaneous Nitrification and Denitrification. The lowest concentration of nitrifying and denitrifying microorganisms was obtained in effluent and sludge at the end of phase III. From the TP (Total Proteins)/TPS (Total Polysaccharides) ratio obtained (0.8 ± 0.1, 1.3 ± 0.1 e 1.5 ± 0.1 in phases I, II and III), it was possible to conclude that the biofilm in phase I was more porous, with a thin layer if compared to that in phase II and III.

ABSTRACT

Outcomes in a RCTs of 12 weeks of theclinical efficacy of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) as an adjunctive treatment on depression and anxiety symptoms and its effects on high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels. A wide array of measures were made. The 17-item version of the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS17); the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A); Sheehan Disability Scale; Quality of Life; Clinical Global Impression (CGI); anthropometrics measures; and vital signs and biochemical laboratory. There were no significant differences among the groups regarding demographic, clinical features, use of medication, metabolic syndrome and comorbidities. From baseline to week 12, individuals receiving NAC, versus placebo, had a statistically significant reduction in depressive symptoms on HDRS17 (p < 0.01) and anxiety symptoms on HAM-A (p = 0.04), but only for individuals with levels of hs-CRP > 3 mg/L at baseline. Individuals receiving NAC with baseline levels of hs-CRP > 3 mg/L, had more significant reduction in uric acid levels compared to individuals with baseline levels of hs-CRP ≤ 3 mg/L on week 12. Participants receiving placebogained significantly more weight during the 12 weeks for baseline levels of hs-CRP ≤ 3 mg/L and hs-CRP > 3 mg/L, and individuals receiving NAC in both groups did not have significant weight change during the 12 weeks. No individuals were withdrawn from the study because of adverse event. NAC group exhibited significantly greater reduction on hs-CRP levels than placebo group from baseline to week 12.
