ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Overloading or excessive mechanical stress to the claws may damage the sensitive claw tissues and subsequently lead to sole ulcers. Corrective treatment can prevent complications of these sole ulcers. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a wedge-shaped relief incision from the bulb to the tip of the outer claw of the pelvic limb on the pressure distribution beneath the pertaining claw. Furthermore, it aimed to clarify whether a change in the pressure distribution would lead to dermal pressure relief in the area of a horn defect. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Nineteen isolated bovine limbs from an abattoir were gradually trimmed resulting in following stages. A: initial condition; B: functional claw trimming, steps 1-3; C: extension of the model and drill of a circular lesion at the Rusterholz site (outer claw ulcer simulation); D: wedge shaped, weight-relieving incision from the bulb halfway towards the sole tip; E: further extension of the wedge-shaped incision towards the sole tip. The limbs were loaded with 200 kg following each of the procedures. A pressure sensor system was used in order to analyze the pressure distribution beneath the claws. Furthermore, positioning of the claws on a glass plate allowed for an evaluation of corium resp. fat cushion protrusion through the artificial lesion. RESULTS: In the untrimmed claws, an average of 63 % of the total force applied rested on the outer claw area. This value decreased to 30 % following step E. Maximum pressure values shifted from the bulb area towards the sole tip with increasing degree of claw trimming. The relative loading area of the inner claw increased to up to 18.4 % following the procedures. The described incision technique (step E) resulted in a significant reduction of corium protrusion through the artificial horn defect in comparison to the claw situation in step C. CONCLUSION: The wedge-shaped, weight-relieving incision (step E) led to pressure reduction in the area of the outer claw and the bulb region in this ex-vivo-study. Therefore, this trimming method may serve to relieve pressure from the vulnerable Rusterholz site as well as providing means for reducing corium compression. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The described trimming method facilitates pressure relief on the outer claw area in live animals. In this, it may exert a positive effect on disease progression in Rusterholz sole ulcers.

ABSTRACT

The effectiveness of salicylic acid paste (PASTE) was tested for topical treatment of 25 acute and 25 chronic digital dermatitis (DD) lesions. Control groups with the same number of acute and chronic DD lesions were treated with topical oxytetracycline spray (SPRAY) and by washing only with water (HYDRO) respectively. The therapeutic effects were evaluated using a pain score, the healing rate, the lesion size and other parameters. Pre-treatment and control examinations were carried out on day 0, 4, 14 and 21. In the PASTE group, 76.0% of acute DD lesions were pain free and 64.0% of acute DD lesions were healed on day 21 showing a normal skin surface (MO). Only 28.0% of acute DD lesions treated with SPRAY and 16.0% treated with HYDRO had healed on day 21. A significantly higher healing rate was revealed in acute lesions for the PASTE compared to the HYDRO group (p < 0.05) for all three re-checks, and for the PASTE group compared with the SPRAY group (p < 0.05) for day 4 and day 14. Healing rates of chronic DD lesions were higher in the PASTE group with 44.0% on day 14 and 36.0% on day 21, compared with 16.0% in the SPRAY and 32.0% in the HYDRO group on day 14, and 20.0% (SPRAY) and 28.0% (HYDRO) on day 21 respectively. The recurrence rate of lesions after they had healed during the study period was 14.5% in total. Digital dermatitis lesions treated with salicylic acid paste and a wrap showed significantly higher healing rates within the study period, odds ratios for healing of acute lesions with PASTE were 4.5 to 6.7 times higher than with SPRAY, and 9.3 to 36.4 higher compared with HYDRO.

ABSTRACT

The claw health of 139 heifers with a mean age of 22.1 months (SD: 2.6) in seven free stall dairy farms in Lower Austria was evaluated. Claw lesions were assessed during functional claw trimming and documented and analysed using the digital program Claw Manager. For documentation of lesions, each claw was divided into ten zones. The prevalence of lameness, claw lesions and their severity were determined, furthermore the Cow-Claw-Scores (CCS), Farm-Claw-Scores (FCS) and Farm-Zone-Scores (FZS) were calculated.The FCS between farms was tested for significant differences. A lameness prevalence of 9.4% and an overall prevalence of claw lesions of 98.5% were recorded in these 139 heifers.The most commonly diagnosed disorders were white line lesions (WLL) with a prevalence of 87.1%, heel horn erosion (84.9%), double soles (DS; 47.5%), sole haemorrhages (SH; 33.1%) and a concave dorsal wall contour in 15.1% of the heifers. High correlation coefficients (r > or = 0.93) were found between SH and DS, WLL and DS. 86.5% of all diagnosed claw lesions were score 1 (mild), 11.1% score 2 (moderate) and 2.4% score 3 (severe) lesions. The CCS in all heifers ranged between 0 and 267, and the FCS in the seven herds was between eleven and 55. Claw zone 3 was affected most frequently and severely. Following the results of this study, systematic functional claw trimming and consequent documentation of detected claw lesions is highly recommended for heifers at the time of their first insemination to prevent claw disorders in lactating cows and to improve their well-being.
