ABSTRACT

The treatment of 77 children suffering from acquired aplastic anemia (AAA) in the Petersburg Pediatric Hematological Center allowed the authors to distinguish three groups of patients according to the disease severity: severe, moderate and mild. The groups differed by clinicohematological parameters and treatment results. With reference to the above classification conventional combined treatment with hormones and splenectomy is uneffective in groups 1 and 2, but is able to induce remission in half the patients with mild disease. Immunosuppression with antilymphocytic globulin and large-dose methylprednisolone markedly contributed to survival prolongation in severe and moderate AAA (69 and 90% of cases with long-term remissions, respectively), being a failure in group 1 patients who are primarily scheduled for bone marrow transplantation.

ABSTRACT

The immune and endocrine systems and HLA genotype were subjected to a comparative study in patients with systemic and discoid lupus erythematosus (SLE, DLE). The patients suffering from these diseases were found to differ in a number of the parameters of the immune status including the content in blood serum and supernatant of the cultivated mononuclear cells of the soluble molecules HLA-A, HLA-B and HLA-DR. The degree of the SLE and DLE association with the genes and haplotypes of class I HLA complex was different as was the character of the association of HLA-A and HLA-B specificities with the activity of the immune system cells and with hydrocortisone content in plasma. The common immunogenetic syndrome characteristic of SLE and DLE patients has been identified.

ABSTRACT

The present investigation has demonstrated that it is advisable to specify different immunologic subvarieties of acute lymphoblastic leukemia based on the detection of superficial markers of blast cells. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia subvarieties are characterized by different clinical and hematological manifestations and differ with respect to the sensitivity to cytostatic therapy. The duration of remissions and lifespans was different in children belonging to different groups.

ABSTRACT

A total of 45 patients were given cytosar and daunorubicin therapy at small doses. Of them 23 patients were with acute nonlymphoblastic leukemia, 12--with hemopoietic dysplasia, and 10--with chronic myeloid leukemia. Cytosar was injected subcutaneously every 12 h at a dose of 10 mg/m2 for 10-25 days, daunorubicin was injected intravenously by drop infusion at a dose of 5 mg/m2. Clinicohematological remission was obtained in 13 patients, clinicohematological improvement in 16. Thus, a positive effect was achieved in 29 patients (64%). The authors provided some data on the influence of small doses of cytosar and daunorubicin on cell maturation in vitro.

ABSTRACT

With the use of computers it proved possible to distinguish the most informative electro- and phonocardiographic signs in variants of tonsillogenic affection of the heart and primary rheumatic carditis as the result of which the severity of the myocardial affection could be judged. These signs are very important in the choice of the treatment and in prognosis. Cardiac-type neurocirculatory dystonias are characterized by the fewest informative signs indicative of vegetative effects produced on the heart. In tonsillogenic myocardial dystrophy, the number of informative signs and their pronounced character increase, which is evidence of more complex disorders in the heart. The signs in infectious-allergic myocarditis and primary rheumatic carditis are common in character, which makes differential diagnosis difficult and calls for further research into new diagnostic methods. According to the phonocardiogram, a systolic murmur was present in patients of all the groups that were examined, which had specific features in neurocirculatory dystonia and in tonsillogenic myocardial dystrophy. No essential differences were found in myocarditides.

ABSTRACT

A study was made of the effect of heparin and heparin-precipitable fractions of human blood plasms (HPF) on the capacity of the cells of mouse spleen immunized with sheep erythrocytes to plaque-formation in vitro. It was found that heparin and HPF produced an inhibitory effect on the reaction of plaque formation as a result of interaction with lymphocytes. It is supposed that a possible point of application of heparin and HPF action are surface cell membranes of the antibody-forming cells.

ABSTRACT

Experiments were conducted on CBA mice. The effect of heparin and of the fraction of human blood plasma precipitated by heparin (FPH) on the course of the specific immunity reaction, i.e. of rosette-formation, was studied. Inhibition of the mentioned reaction by FPH was revealed. No such effect was produced by heparin. Experiments were carried out in vitro. The results of the mentioned experiments were compared with literature data on the effect of heparin and FPH on other immunological reactions. A supposition was put forward that these substances interacting with lymphocytes had different points of application: heparin-cellular membrane, FPH-superficial cell receptors.
