ABSTRACT

A table differential diagnosis algorithm has been developed to improve the diagnosis of tuberculosis and lung cancer in tuberculosis institutions. The algorithm proved effective already at the stage of primary antituberculosis aid, being a reliable tool in the diagnosis of lung cancer and tuberculosis, contributing to shorter examinations of patients, earlier administration of adequate treatment.

ABSTRACT

The examined groups included 58 patients with cancer, 61 subjects with pulmonary tuberculosis and 50 healthy persons as controls. The content of trace elements in blood, bronchial lavage fluid from the most affected portions of the lungs, and in pathologic and healthy lung tissues was determined by a C-115 atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The examination findings demonstrated that the content of blood serum ferric zinc and magnesium, and erythrocyte zinc, manganese, potassium and calcium was higher in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis than in those with lung cancer. At the same time the content of magnesium and calcium in bronchial lavage fluid was higher in persons with a malignant process than in those with pulmonary tuberculosis. As far as differential diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis and lung cancer is concerned, it is advisable to measure the levels of erythrocyte trace elements since the latter most precisely reflects their content in the lung pathologic tissue.

ABSTRACT

A comparative analysis was made with regard to histologic examination findings of the external respiration function indices in 156 patients with cancer and newly diagnosed pulmonary tuberculosis. The given analysis has demonstrated that as compared with pulmonary tuberculosis patients the external respiration function was more disturbed in subjects with a tumor process. This observation mainly concerned the persons with central cancer at the age below 50 and whose ventilation disturbances mostly had an obstructive nature caused by both endobronchial growth of the tumor and a mechanical underflow of the lymph. Lymphodynamic disturbances in the case of cancer were more evident than in tuberculosis.

ABSTRACT

Within the last decade, the incidence of lung cancer in persons under dispensary observation and in particular in persons of groups III and VII of dispensary registration has been increasing annually. The increase was especially marked among male, elderly and senile persons exposed to harmful factors. Such persons should be examined in tuberculosis dispensaries at least twice a year. When malignant tumor is suspected overall examination is required prior to hospitalization with the most available and informative methods.

ABSTRACT

One hundred and thirty three therapists registered as students of the courses for advanced medical training were questionnaired anonymously on lung pathology and particularly on phthisiology. The analysis of the questionnaires revealed that their knowledge of the problems of prophylaxis, early detection and differential diagnosis of tuberculosis was not sufficient. The shortcomings were taken into consideration in the lectures and practical lessons on phthisiology. The emphasis was given to the problems which proved to be the most difficult for the therapeutists.
